Abstract Enteral feeding is considered the preferred method for providing a complete or supplemental source of nutrition to patients. Enteral formulas (EFs) are traditionally assessed from general information provided by the manufacturer such as caloric density, percentage of macronutrients, and micronutrients to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance. Sometimes labeling information highlights particular ingredients to indicate specific properties at a metabolic or nutrition level. However, it is necessary to review the quality and composition of any enteral formula, since the basic components are responsible for tolerance and nutrition efficacy, and this should not be overshadowed by the benefit of a single constituent. Intolerance to EF is commonly attributed to individual patient response or to the means of administration. The objective of this review is to highlight the importance of appraising EFs with regard to composition and effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract Background: Obesity and its consequences have now reached worldwide pandemic proportions. Among treatments, bariatric interventions are the most effective for weight reduction. Here, we describe the change in anthropometric measurements (AMs) of 615 adult bariatric procedure patients seen in the private practice of a registered dietitian (RD) in Bogotá, Colombia.
Methods: Observational retrospective study of AMs recorded between 1996 and 2013 for patients who had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG, n = 290), laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB, n = 207), and laparoscopic Roux-EN-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB, n = 36) or the non-surgical gastric balloon (GB, n = 82) procedure. Patients had three bimonthly follow-up visits. Paired t tests compared baseline (first) and 6-month (fourth) follow-up visit values.
Results: Differences in AMs between the baseline and fourth visits were statistically significant for the surgical interventions. A mean weight loss of 22 kg, equivalent to a 22% total body weight loss, together with significant reduction of the waist-to-height-ratio (WHtR)(p < 0.001) and body mass index (BMI)(p < 0.001), was observed across all procedures.
Conclusions: The use of multiple AMs enables a comprehensive assessment of body composition in patients who undergo bariatric procedures. Our study is a useful resource for international future reference and highlights the impact that the RD can have on understanding and influencing the effectiveness of bariatric procedures.

Abstract Objective: Parenteral nutrition represents a therapeutic option for patients with type 3 intestinal failure. If used exclusively, parenteral nutrition has to be complete to provide all essential nutrients. The aim was to assess the availability of parenteral nutrition in all parts of the world, to better comprehend the global situation, and to prepare an action plan to increase access to parenteral nutrition.
Methods: An international survey using an electronic questionnaire was conducted in August 2019 and repeated in May 2022. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 52 members or affiliates of the International Clinical Nutrition Section of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Questions addressed the availability of parenteral nutrition admixtures and their components, reimbursement, and prescribing pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic. All participating countries were categorized by their economic status.
Results: Thirty-six country representatives responded, answering all questions. Parenteral nutrition was available in all countries (100%), but in four countries (11.1%) three-chamber bags were the only option, and in six countries a multibottle system was still used. Liver-sparing amino acids were available in 18 (50%), kidney-sparing in eight (22.2%), and electrolyte-free in 11 (30.5%) countries (30.5%). In most countries (n = 28; 79.4%), fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins were available. Trace elements solutions were unavailable in four (11.1%) countries. Parenteral nutrition was reimbursed in most countries (n = 33; 91.6%). No significant problems due to the coronavirus pandemic were reported.
Conclusions: Despite the apparent high availability of parenteral nutrition worldwide, there are some factors that may have a substantial effect on the quality of parenteral nutrition admixtures. These shortages create an environment of inequality.
