Abstract In a virus pandemic context, buildings ventilation has been recognized as a solution for preventing transmission of the virus in aerosolized form. The impact of the widespread recommendation of window opening and sealing door on ventilation circuits needs to be considered with a multizone approach. We modeled the airflow distribution in a building where people are isolating in a pandemic context, including one infected person. We analyzed the impact of opening the window and sealing the door in the quarantine room on exposures and probability of infection for occupants of the flat and of adjacent flats. In order to study the sensitivity of the results, we tested three ventilation systems: balanced, exhaust-only, and humidity-based demand-controlled, and several window- and door-opening strategies. When the door of the quarantine room is sealed, we observe that opening the window in the quarantine room always results in increased exposure and probability of infection for at least one other occupant, including in neighbors' apartments. When all internal doors are opened, we observe moderate impacts, with rather an increase of exposure of the occupants of the same apartments and of their probability of infection, and a decrease for the occupants located in other apartments. Based on the analysis on the airflows distribution in this case study, we conclude that sealing the internal door has more influence than opening the window of the quarantine room, whatever the ventilation system. We observe that this widespread recommendation to open the window of a quarantine room and to seal the door is based on the consideration of a single zone model. We illustrate the importance of moving from such a single zone approach to a multizone approach for quantifying ventilation and airing impacts in multizone buildings as residences in order to prevent epidemics of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. It highlights the need of air leakage databases.

Abstract Background and objective Asthma is a chronic recurring respiratory disease, and its prevalence is on the rise. A drop in the quality of life (QoL), as well as sleep problems, has been reported in asthmatic patients in the literature. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between QoL and sleep quality in asthmatic patients. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 76 diagnosed asthmatic outpatients from our university clinic. The subjects completed the self-administered 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey QoL questionnaire (SF-36) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessment. Results The study results revealed poor sleep quality in 55 (72.4%) of the subjects. The total sleep quality scores significantly and negatively correlated with the physical and mental components of QoL (moderate, p=0.00). All QoL subscales were significantly higher in patients with good sleep quality (PSQI: <5, p<0.00). Logistic regression analysis showed that good sleep quality (modified) could predict a mental component score (MCS) of more than 64. Conclusion Poor sleep quality can bring down the scores of all QoL components in asthma patients and is the best predictor of their QoL. Therefore, sleep quality and QoL indicators could be applied as part of a better approach to classification, management, and control of asthma.

Abstract High-reflective coatings are used in many physics experiments. Despite the high quality of the optical coating, the performances of the mirrors are altered by the scattered light induced by micrometer size defects in the coating layers. The topic of this paper is the study of the point-like scatterers present in the specific coating of the mirrors used in state-of-the-art, high-sensitivity optical experiments. We studied the behavior of the materials according to different thicknesses and the resulting defects after annealing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first insight into the formation of such defects for different materials and thickness and how this is reduced when samples are annealed.

Abstract Many studies examine issues of work-life conflict of employees. However, in research on work-life conflict little attention has been given to contract workers to date. This is rather surprising as there are indications that the specific working conditions of contract workers can have consequences for their work-life conflict. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to reduce the existing research gap by presenting a study which analyzes the antecedents of the work-life conflict of contract workers in the IT and media sectors. Results show that the work-life conflict of contract workers is significantly influenced by working hours and income. Furthermore, the number of younger children has a significant impact on their work-life conflict when regarded in interaction with gender. All in all, this study contributes to a differentiated understanding of work-life conflict in the specific case of contract workers.
