Title translation The mercury release of different amalgams in vitro.
Abstract Release of mercury from 8 different amalgams was tested in water initially and after annealing für 2 years. The measuring methodology was geared to warrant minimum mercury losses due to evaporation and adsorption. Mercury loss during the first 24 hours ranged between 17.4 micrograms/cm2.d and 34.5 micrograms/cm2.d. Annealing of the amalgams for 2 years reduced mercury leaching significantly, to about 1.5 micrograms/cm2.d with no significant differences between the different amalgam brands.

Title translation The release of mercury and copper from in vivo aged amalgam fillings.
Abstract Release of mercury and copper in water over time from in vivo annealed amalgams in an unpolished and polished state was measured. Mercury and copper loss from unpolished amalgams was on the average 1,00 micrograms/cm2.d and 0.06 micrograms/cm2.d, respectively. Polishing the amalgams reduced these values significantly to 0.19 micrograms/cm2.d for mercury (p = 0.004) and to 0.03 micrograms/cm2.d for copper (p = 0.009). It was concluded that polishing amalgam surfaces (under water cooling) reduces release of mercury and copper significantly.

Abstract The aim of this investigation was to study the accuracy of a newly developed electrical resistance monitor in diagnosing occlusal fissure caries in vivo in teeth without cavitation. The electrical resistance was measured in vivo on human third molars without existing restorations and without any macroscopic carious cavitation. Data from 41 sites on 26 occlusal surfaces were obtained. After measurement, the teeth were extracted, histologically prepared, and serially sectioned perpendicular to the occlusal surface and examined for the presence of caries. Nineteen sites had no caries, 7 had enamel caries, and 15 sites showed dentinal caries, 4 of which deep dentinal caries. For the diagnosis of occlusal caries with the electrical resistance monitor, the specificity was 0.77, the sensitivity 0.93, and the accuracy 0.83. Likelihood ratios for four diagnostic levels (no caries, enamel caries, dentinal caries, and deep dentinal caries) were 0.09, 0, 3.47, and 4.16, respectively. Diagnosis of occlusal caries using conventional bite-wing radiographs showed a specificity of 0.77, a sensitivity of 0.62, and an accuracy of 0.71. The electrical resistance monitor was well suited to detect in vivo occlusal caries under clinically intact fissures. The rather high value (0.23) of false-positive ratings, however, might lead to a substantial number of sound teeth being restored unnecessarily. Substantial improvement of occlusal, caries diagnosis may be achieved by combining this method with others.

Abstract Inclusive K_{S};{0}K_{S};{0} production in ep collisions at the DESY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5 fb;{-1}. Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f_{2}(1270)/a_{2};{0}(1320), f_{2};{'}(1525) and f_{0}(1710). Masses and widths were obtained using a fit which takes into account theoretical predictions based on SU(3) symmetry arguments, and are consistent with the Particle Data Group values. The f_{0}(1710) state, which has a mass consistent with a glueball candidate, was observed with a statistical significance of 5 standard deviations. However, if this state is the same as that seen in gammagamma-->K_{S};{0}K_{S};{0}, it is unlikely to be a pure glueball state.
