Eingesetzt werden kann die Methode bei verschiedenen somatischen und psychischen Störungen, z. B. zur Verringerung muskulärer Verspannungen bei Schmerzstörungen, zur Verengung von Blutgefäßen bei Migräne, zur Steigerung der mit Aufmerksamkeit assoziierten Gehirnaktivität bei ADHS oder zur Verbesserung der allgemeinen Entspannungsfähigkeit. Dieses Buch beschreibt die wissenschaftlichen und psychophysiologischen Hintergründe von Biofeedback und der spezifischen Variante des Neurofeedback, welches auf der Messung der Gehirnaktivität beruht. Neben den angenommenen Wirkmechanismen und vielfältigen Varianten des Biofeedbacks auf Basis unterschiedlicher Biosignale und Körpersysteme, z. B. Herz-Kreislauf-System, Muskelsystem, autonomes und zentrales Nervensystem, wird die zugrunde liegende Messtechnik erklärt. Zusätzlich werden der typische Aufbau von Biofeedback-Sitzungen, die zugehörige Diagnostik sowie Standardprotokolle dargestellt. Das Vorgehen wird anhand von Fallbeispielen verschiedener Störungsbilder veranschaulicht. Erläuterungen zu typischen Anwendungsproblemen sollen ebenso zum Einsatz dieser vielseitigen Methode in der therapeutischen Praxis motivieren, wie der ausführliche Überblick über die aktuelle Evidenz für Biofeedback. Das Buch ist damit eine Bereicherung für therapeutisch arbeitende Personen, die dieses auf objektiven Messungen basierende Verfahren einsetzen wollen, um ihr Behandlungsspektrum zu erweitern.

    Abstract Culturally appropriate cancer education is an opportunity to reduce health inequities in cancer. This manuscript describes the outcomes of piloting cancer education for youth in the Northwest Arctic region of Alaska. The project began due to community concerns, was focused through sharing circles conducted in the region, and was guided by a community advisory board. The project was based on the principles of Community Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR), honored Indigenous Ways of Knowing, and was grounded in Empowerment Theory. In response to community requests, eleven cancer education lessons were developed for young people in the Northwest Arctic. Several lessons were piloted in spring 2022. Each participant was invited to complete a pre-lesson and a post-lesson survey. A total of 113 surveys were completed from five different lessons: 66 pre-lesson surveys and 47 post-lesson surveys. Respondents' mean cancer knowledge scores were significantly higher after the Cancer Basics lesson. On 98% of post-lesson surveys, respondents said they planned to share cancer education messages such as staying tobacco-free and increasing physical activity with others, including their family, friends, and community members. On 93% of the post-lesson surveys, respondents indicated they planned to make changes to reduce their own personal cancer risk, including by staying tobacco-free, eating healthier, and increasing physical activity. "Cancer is serious, and something we should start talking about".

    Abstract Introduction: Pathological skin picking (PSP) is an excessive behavior which characterizes Skin Picking Disorder. Individuals repeatedly pick their skin and cause skin lesions, but are unable to control the behavior, which can cause severe distress. Visible self-inflicted skin lesions can additionally affect individuals with PSP due to emerging appearance-related concerns. However, these concerns and their role in PSP have hardly been studied, especially not in comparison with individuals with dermatological conditions and skin-healthy controls.

    Discussion: The present study shows that individuals with PSP exhibit strong appearance-related concerns, regardless of the presence or absence of underlying or comorbid dermatological conditions. Therefore, appearance-related concerns should be explicitly addressed in dermatological and psychotherapeutic settings. Future studies should also include longitudinal and experimental analyses to more clearly classify the role of appearance-related concerns in the etiology of PSP and Skin Picking Disorder.

    Abstract Objective: We examined whether autonomic flexibility to experimentally presented stressors is reduced in somatic symptom disorder (SSD) as this would point to reduced vagal control as a proposed indicator of emotion regulation deficits.
    Method: In this experimental study, the influence of health-related and social stressors on subjective and physiological reactivity was investigated in 29 subjects with SSD without any medical condition SSD(mc-), 33 subjects with SSD with medical condition SSD(mc+) and 32 healthy controls at the age from 18 to 70 years. Self-report and physiological variables were measured before and after/during stressor exposure, using state ratings of symptom intensity, disability, tension and mood, heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV).
    Results: Overall, the tension increased and the mood worsened after exposure to stressors compared to pre-exposure. Compared to HC, the two SSD groups showed higher symptom intensity, disability, tension and worse mood. The SSD(mc-) group revealed higher HR than HC (p = .012, d = -0.77). Compared to pre-exposure, symptom impairment increased after social stressor exposure in SSD(mc-) (p < .001, d = 1.36). HRV-root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) only decreased in HC during exposure (p = .003, d = -1.09), not in the SSD groups. The two SSD groups did not differ in their reactivity to stressors.
    Conclusion: HRV in SSD, seems to respond less flexibly to stressors, potentially reflecting overall physiological disturbance through reduced parasympathetic influence on HR. Stress reactivity in SSD(mc-) and SSD(mc+) do not seem to differ.

    Abstract Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder that can become chronic and debilitating when left untreated. Available pharmacotherapies are limited, take weeks to show modest benefit and remain ineffective for up to 40% of patients. Methylone is currently in clinical development for the treatment of PTSD. Preclinical studies show rapid, robust and long-lasting antidepressant-like and anxiolytic effects. The mechanism of action underlying these effects is not yet fully understood. This study investigated the downstream gene expression changes and signaling pathways affected by methylone in key brain areas linked to PTSD and MDD. It also sought to determine whether neuroplasticity-related genes were involved. We compared effects of methylone with MDMA to explore similarities and differences in their brain effects because MDMA-assisted psychotherapy has recently shown benefit in clinical trials for PTSD and methylone is a structural analog of MDMA.
    Methods: Monoamine binding, uptake and release studies were performed and a high-throughput-screen evaluated agonist/antagonist activities at 168 GPCRs
    Results: Methylone, a monoamine uptake inhibitor and releaser, demonstrated no off-target effects at 168 GPCRs, unlike MDMA, which showed activity at 5HT2A and 5HT2C receptors. RNA-seq results revealed significant regulation of myelin-related genes in the amygdala, confirmed by immunohistochemistry. In the frontal cortex, methylone significantly upregulated genes implicated in neuroplasticity.
    Conclusion: Results suggest that (1) methylone is a rapid-acting neuroplastogen that affects key brain substrates for PTSD and MDD and that (2) methylone appears to exhibit higher specificity and fewer off-target effects than MDMA. Together, these results are consistent with the reported clinical experiences of methylone and MDMA and bolster the potential use of methylone in the treatment of PTSD and, potentially, other neuropsychiatric disorders.

    Abstract Unalaska Island, Alaska, served as a US military base during World War II. The military installed bases on Unalaska and nearby islands, many of which were built adjacent to Unangan communities. The military used toxic compounds in its operations and left a legacy of pollution that may pose health risks to residents and local wildlife. The goals of this study were to identify hotspots of contamination remaining at Unalaska formerly used defense (FUD) sites, evaluate the risk posed by arsenic, and examine "no US Department of Defense action indicated" (NDAI) status determinations for FUD sites near communities. We compiled soil chemistry data from remediation reports prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers at 18 FUD sites on and near Unalaska. Nine had past and/or active remediation projects and on-site sampling data. Eight sites did not have sampling data and were characterized as NDAI. One site was listed as closed. For the nine sites with sampling data, we compiled data for 22 contaminants of concern (COC) and compared concentrations to soil cleanup levels for human health (18 AAC 75.341). We mapped contaminant concentrations exceeding these levels to identify hotspots of contamination. We found that concentrations of some of the 22 COC exceeded Alaska cleanup levels despite remediation efforts, including diesel range organics, arsenic, and lead. The highest COC concentrations were at the FUD site adjacent to the City of Unalaska. A quantitative risk assessment for arsenic found that the risk of exposure through drinking water is low. We highlight concerns with NDAI designations and current remedial practices at remote FUD sites located adjacent to communities. Our data suggest the need for further remediation and monitoring efforts on Unalaska for certain contaminants and research to examine potential threats to human and animal health associated with these sites.     Abstract Mercury (Hg) is known to be maternally transferred during embryonic development in sharks; however, Hg concentrations in embryos of filter feeding shark species have not previously been reported. This study measured the total Hg (THg) concentration in muscle tissue of 27 embryos taken from a pregnant whale shark (Rhincodon typus) landed in Taiwan in 1995 and the mean THg concentration compared to the mean muscle THg concentration in embryos from other shark species. The mean (± standard deviation) THg concentration in whale shark embryos was 0.0762 ± 0.0163 µg/g dry weight (0.0224 ± 0.0054 µg/g wet weight). There was no relationship between muscle THg concentration and body length and no significant difference in THg concentration between male and female embryos (p > 0.05). Whale shark embryos have the lowest reported muscle THg concentrations compared to literature values for muscle THg concentrations for embryos from other shark species.
