Abstract A male-produced aggregation pheromone, common to the rice weevil,Sitophilus oryzae, and the maize weevil,S. zeamais, was isolated and identified from hexane extracts of highly absorbent paper disks exposed individually to young virgin male weevils. A combination of preparative column and gas-liquid chromatography of disk extracts yielded purified natural pheromone. When analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the structure of the natural pheromone, "sitophilure," proved to be (R (*),S (*))-5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone, of unknown enantiomeric composition. Synthetic racemic pheromone was highly attractive to males and females of both rice and maize weevils. In addition, both sexes of the granary weevil,S. granarius (L.) were attracted to the racemic preparation.

Abstract Amoxicillin, ampicillin, bleomycin, carmustine, cephalothin, dacarbazine, lomustine, metronidazole, norethindrone, streptozocin, sulfamethoxazole, and verapamil were completely degraded in solution, without the production of mutagenic residues, by photolysis using a medium-pressure mercury lamp in an all-quartz apparatus. A stream of air was passed through the solution and for amoxicillin, ampicillin, bleomycin, lomustine, metronidazole, and norethindrone it was necessary to add hydrogen peroxide. Dilute aqueous solutions of ampicillin, bleomycin, carmustine, cephalothin, lomustine, norethindrone, streptozocin, trimethoprim, and verapamil can be decontaminated using polymeric Amberlite resins.

Abstract The anal gland secretions of Bothriomyrmex syrius Forel workers contain cis-3-dodecenoic acid and small amounts of trans-2-dodecenoic acid and oleic acid. The female secretions consist of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and a trace of alpha-terpineol. The presence of the ketone in the female secretion may explain the success of these ants as temporary social parasites of the Tapinoma ants.
