Abstract Open science is an increasingly important topic for research, politics and funding agencies. However, the discourse on open science is heavily influenced by certain research fields and paradigms, leading to the risk of generalizing what counts as openness to other research fields, regardless of its applicability. In our paper, we provide evidence that researchers perceive different profiles in the potential to apply open science practices to their projects, making a one-size-fits-all approach unsuitable. In a pilot study, we first systematized the breadth of open science practices. The subsequent survey study examined the perceived applicability of 13 open science practices across completed research projects in a broad variety of research disciplines. We were able to identify four different profiles in the perceived applicability of open science practices. For researchers conducting qualitative-empirical research projects, comprehensively implementing the breadth of open science practices is tendentially not feasible. Further, research projects from some disciplines tended to fit a profile with little opportunity for public participation. Yet, disciplines and research paradigms appear not to be the key factors in predicting the perceived applicability of open science practices. Our findings underscore the case for considering project-related conditions when implementing open science practices. This has implications for the establishment of policies, guidelines and standards concerning open science.

Abstract Is the euro area getting closer with regard to business cycles? The study investigates the linkage between business cycle convergence and financial portfolio choice for a panel of 18 European countries. For this purpose an index is constructed which measures the similarity of investment portfolios. The idea is that financial portfolio choice has an impact on business cycles and contributes to convergence via the consumption-wealth linkage. The background of the analysis is the International Asset Pricing Model (IAPM). The results of fixed effects GMM TSLS estimations confirm the linkage. The effect is higher for country-pairs that are built by one euro area member and one member outside the euro area

Abstract The indirect experience of dementia mediated through the arts shapes our preconceptions, educating us to understand dementia, gaining a deeper appreciation of how it may affect an individual. By contrast dementia research has largely regarded the arts through an 'instrumental' lens. They are treated as complex psychosocial interventions. Evidence from research on the arts and dementia remains piecemeal because most studies are small and not all are well designed. For numerous reasons the arts warrant further evaluation and investigation in relation to their potential impact on people with dementia. That research needs to be better-designed and adequately funded if it is to advance knowledge in this field. This is fraught with difficulties: the arts are dynamic and interactive; the medium (intervention) can be affected unpredictably by those people who engage with it. Many creative activities are deliberately participatory; think of group singing or stand-up comedy. The influence of human variability in relation to arts interventions means that large studies are necessary to control for individual differences. Moreover, few studies of the arts in dementia have been designed adequately to account for the intra-group interaction that is characteristic of many arts activities. Then, there is a lack of clarity around the purpose of the arts in dementia. There is scope for the development and adoption of comprehensive theoretical frameworks to guide research into the arts and dementia. This editorial sets out to clarify some aspects of the arts in dementia in order to pave way for further work.
