Abstract This paper describes a multi-year initiative at Michigan State University (MSU) to change our institutional response to relationship violence and sexual misconduct (RVSM) in the aftermath of a large-scale institutional crisis. While the circumstances at MSU are unique, many universities have faced or will face moments that bring RVSM issues into the spotlight. To inform other colleges and universities, we describe how we developed a 5-year strategic plan to transform services for survivors and develop prevention programming for multiple audiences and at multiple levels of analysis. We titled this framework

Abstract Michigan State University (MSU) created a long-term, values-based strategic plan to increase help-seeking and reduce the incidence of relationship violence and sexual misconduct. Creating systemic change in institutions of higher education is challenging, particularly so in the wake of massive institutional crises and betrayal, as we had at MSU. In this paper, we address the challenges and critiques of our strategic planning efforts offered by esteemed scholar-activists: Jacobson López (2023), Hirsch and Khan (2023), McMahon (2023), and Boots et al. (2023).

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cytoprotective and cytotoxic activities of selected plant flavonoids in C6 glioma cells. Apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin, and quercetin were cytotoxic at low μM concentrations (LOECs: 5-20 μM), whereas myricetin was less toxic (LOEC>20 μM). Cytotoxicity was not due to H(2)O(2) generation from flavonoids in culture medium. Quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol protected the cells from peroxide-induced cytotoxicity. Concentration-effect curves for cytoprotection had a biphasic shape. In contrast, apigenin and myricetin did not exhibit any cytoprotective activity. The first three compounds also inhibited cellular lipid peroxidation induced by CHP, while the latter were ineffective. Importantly, concentrations of luteolin and kaempferol protecting cells under oxidative stress were identical to those causing cell damage under normal conditions. Only in case of quercetin there was a narrow range of concentrations protecting cells without being cytotoxic to non-stressed cells. Thus, even for flavonoids with a high antioxidant capacity in cell-free systems the cytoprotective selectivity (LOEC(cytotox)/LOEC(cytoprot)) was very low or even absent. These results should be taken into account when the prophylactic or therapeutic application of flavonoids as antioxidants is discussed.

Abstract The 48Ca(e,e(')n) reaction has been investigated for excitation energies 11-25 MeV and momentum transfers 0.22-0.43 fm(-1) at the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC. Electric dipole and quadrupole plus monopole strength distributions are extracted from a multipole decomposition of the spectra. Their fragmented structure is described by microscopic calculations allowing for coupling of the basic particle-hole excitations to more complex configurations. Comparison of the excitation spectrum of the residual nucleus 47Ca with statistical model calculations reveals a 39(5)% contribution of direct decay to the damping of the giant dipole resonance.

Abstract In vitro enzymic synthesis of CDP-D-[U-14C]abequose, CDP-6-deoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose and CDP-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose was achieved using enzymes from cell extracts of cultures of Escherichia coli strains harbouring and expressing genes of the rfb gene cluster of Salmonella enterica LT2. From an initial synthesis step, CDP-6-deoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose was isolated after 30 min reaction, using CDP-D-glucose, NAD and CDP-glucose 4.6-dehydratase, followed by protein precipitation and desalting by gel chromatography (yield 90.6%). From that intermediate, CDP-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose was produced in a reaction using NADH and a crude extract containing the required enzymes. CDP-D-abequose synthesis was performed either in the presence of excess NADH and NADPH or using an enzymic system which regenerates low concentrations of the coenzymes. In a two-step reaction, CDP-D-glucose was first converted to CDP-6-deoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose, then, following addition of the required coenzymes and enzymes, CDP-D-abequose was formed from this intermediary product in a 1-h incubation. Starting from 250 mg CDP-D-glucose, the molar yield of CDP-D-abequose after protein precipitation and HPLC was 82%, corresponding to more than 200 mg. CDP-D-[U-14C]abequose was synthesised from alpha-D-[U14C]glucose 1-phosphate and CTP using purified glucose-1-phosphate cytidylyltransferase in a reaction preceding the later steps. GC-MS and NMR revealed that the hexose part of the end product was 3.6-dideoxy-D-galactose (abequose) and that the corresponding intermediates were 4-keto-6-deoxy-D-xylo-hexose and 4-keto-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-hexose, respectively. The synthesized CDP-6-deoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose exhibited the characteristic ultraviolet light absorption at 318 nm but no corresponding absorption was found for CDP-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-4-hexulose. A HPLC technique, where the four CDP-sugars were baseline separated, was developed and used for enzyme assays and for the analysis of synthesized products.
