Abstract Obesity is a complex disease defined as an excessive amount of body fat. It is considered a risk factor for several pathologies; therefore, there is an increasing interest in its treatment. Pancreatic lipase (PL) plays a key role in fat digestion, and its inhibition is a preliminary step in the search for anti-obesity agents. For this reason, many natural compounds and their derivatives are studied as new PL inhibitors. This study reports the synthesis of a library of new compounds inspired by two natural neolignans, honokiol (1) and magnolol (2) and bearing amino or nitro groups linked to a biphenyl core. The synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted biphenyls was achieved through an optimisation of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction followed by the insertion of allyl chains, thus furnishing the O- and/or N-allyl derivatives, and finally, a sigmatropic rearrangement yielding in some cases, the C-allyl analogues. Magnolol, honokiol and the twenty-one synthesised biphenyls were evaluated for their in vitro inhibitory activity toward PL. Three compounds (15b, 16 and 17b) were more effective inhibitors than the natural neolignans (magnolol IC

Abstract Q fever is a widespread zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular bacterium with a wide range of hosts. The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of C. burnetii infection in cattle in Sicilian farms. A total of 4,661 serum samples, from cattle belonging to 198 Sicilian farms, were examined by ELISA test and 246 resulted positive. The average seroprevalence at the farm level was 38.8% (77/198) (95% CI), while at the animal level it was 5.28% (246/4,661) (95% CI). The present study highlights the need for continuous monitoring of C. burnetii spread as it represents a serious risk for human health.

Abstract Coxiella burnetii causes diseases in humans (Q fever) and animals, domestic ruminants playing a major role in the epidemiology of the infection. Information on C. burnetii infection in Lebanon is scanty. In order to assess the prevalence of C. burnetii infection in ruminants, a cross-sectional study was undertaken in 2014. A total of 1633 sera from ruminants (865 cattle, 384 sheep and 384 goats) from 429 farms (173 cattle, 128 sheep and 128 goats), in seven provinces of Lebanon were randomly selected and assayed for the presence of antibodies. 39.86% of farms (95% CI: 35.23-44.56) resulted positive. The seroprevalence was 30.63% in Cattle-farms, 46.88% in sheep-farms and 45.31% in goat-farms. Milk samples collected from 282 seropositive animals (86 cows, 93 sheep and 103 goats) from 171 positive farms were tested by a high sensitive Real-Time PCR targeted to the IS1111 transposon of C. burnetii. The overall prevalence in farms was estimated to be 14.04%. Cattle-, sheep- and goat farm prevalence rates were 15.09%, 10% and 17.24%, respectively. The findings of the study show that C. burnetii prevalence in Lebanese domestic ruminants is related to animal species and farming practices. Indeed, the mixed herds with sheep (p < 0.01), the presence of common lambing/kidding areas (p < 0.001) in farms where the use of disinfectants was not a routine practice (p < 0.05) were identified as important risk factors. The results of the study provide baseline information for setting up herd management and public health measures for the prevention and control of Q fever in Lebanon.

Material and methods: A total of 23 Charolaise cows (farm A) and 75 Limousine bulls and Cinisara and Modicana cows (farm B) were enrolled in this study. The blood samples were collected from all subjects at the following time points: before a cycle of intramuscular treatment with oxytetracycline dihydrate (T0), after 5-6 weeks from the treatment (T1), and every 10 weeks until seronegativisation (T2 in Farm A and T3 in Farm B). A serological test (MAT) was used for the diagnosis of leptospirosis.
Results: Two samples from farm A (2/23) and 29 samples from farm B (29/75) were positive to
Conclusion: It is important to use serological and molecular diagnostic techniques complementarily to identify infected individuals.

Abstract Introduction: Scientific data about neurophysiological changes subsequent to pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) are still lacking. The goal of this study was to evaluate sural nerve conduction and Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex) in soleus muscle following adhesiolysis and PRF in patients with unilateral chronic lumbosacral L5-S1 neuropathic radiating pain.
Methods: Seventeen patients received two cycles of 240 seconds high-voltage PRF and epidural adhesiolysis. Sural nerve action potential (SNAP) and the ratio of maximum H-reflex to maximum M response (H/M ratio) as well as pain scores were collected in both lower limbs before, immediately following, and 1 month after the treatment.
Results: At follow-up, a significant reduction in numeric rating scale (NRS) and Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4) scores was observed in 53% of patients reporting pain improvement of ≥ 30% over baseline. The H/M ratio was decreased in the affected limb following PRF (P = 0.01) and 1 month after the treatment (P = 0.04). A direct correlation was observed between H/M ratio variation and NRS score at follow-up in the treated limb (P = 0.04). No significant difference in sural nerve latency, amplitude, and velocity was detected between affected and normal side after treatment and at follow-up.
Conclusions: Epidural adhesiolysis and PRF of the dorsal root ganglion seem to significantly affect spinal reflexes in patients with lumbosacral neuropathic radiating pain.
