Abstract Aim To analyze the epidemiological variations of trend of brucellosisin domestic animals and population in the Central BosniaCanton during the period 2003 - 2012.Methods Epidemiological and laboratory indicators of theincidence of brucellosis among animals and humans wereretrospectively collected. Diagnostic testing of animals wasperformed by serological test in the Veterinary School of theUniversity of Sarajevo, and the population testing was performedin the Institute for Public Health, Central Bosnia Canton, using quantitative ELISA test for detection of IgG, IgM, andIgA brucella antibodies. Results A total of 528 affected people were registered and7500 herds of domestic animals were isolated. All infected peoplewere hospitalized. Infected herds were separated from theflock and euthanized. The highest number of infected peoplewas registered in 2008, with 162 infected persons (incidenceof 64. 8/100,000). Males were infected more frequently thanfemales, 379 (72%), and 149 (28%), respectively. The mostaffected was the working age population, between the age of18 and 54, in 342 (64%) of cases. The highest number of infectedpeople were registered in the Travnik municipality, 361(68.5%) in 38 inhabited places, with the cumulative incidenceof 696/100,000. The annual incidence was from 2.4/100,000in 2003 over 64.8/100,000 during 2008, and up to 4/100,000population in 2012.Conclusion Complete, comprehensive, and multidisciplinaryapproach to the development of health care program for peopleand animals, its implementation and evaluation of measurescould lead to a significant decrease of the incidence rate in arelatively short time period.

Abstract Aim To determine the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosisin the Central Bosnia Canton (CBC) in relation to the placeof residence, gender, occupation, age, as well as the effects ofprevention programs implemented in terms of these infectiousdiseases. The purpose of this study is to highlight the growingpublic health problem of developing this chronic infectious diseaseand the importance of consistent implementation of thestrategy of directly observed therapy (DOTS).Methods This retrospective analytical research was conductedon 550 patients hospitalized during the period 2008-2012 inthe Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis in Travnik.Sources of data included all reported infections, statisticalballot of patients and protocol patients treated at the Hospitalfor Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis of Travnik, as well asthe Protocol of tuberculosis patients at the CBC Departmentof Public Health. Data were analyzed based on gender, age, place of residence and occupation. Results Average incidence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis was46/100.000, with variations that ranged from 29/100.000 inthe towns Novi Travnik to 86/100.000 in Fojnica. Most ofthe patients were males, 380 (69%). People who were mostaffected were younger labor force of the age group 25 to 49,218 (40%). A significant decline in the trend rate of illnessper year was recorded, from 61.81/ 100,000 in 2008, to 29.80year/100,000 in 2012. No cases of resistance in M. tuberculosiswere recorded. Conclusion A consistent implementation of the DOTS strategyprovides the opportunity to establish full control over thischronic infection, which is one of the most important publichealth problems.

Abstract Aim The damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has made the prevention of its further spread at the top of the list of priorities of many governments and state institutions responsible for health and civil protection around the world. This prevention implies an effective system of epidemiological surveillance and the application of timely and effective control measures. This research focuses on the application of techniques for modelling and geovisualization of epidemic data with the aim of simple and fast communication of analytical results via geoportal. Methods The paper describes the approach applied through the project of establishing the epidemiological location-intelligence system for monitoring the effectiveness of control measures in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Results Epidemic data were processed and the results related to spatio-temporal analysis of the infection spread were presented by compartmental epidemic model, reproduction number R, epi-curve diagrams as well as choropleth maps for different levels of administrative units. Geovisualization of epidemic data enabled the release of numerous information from described models and indicators, providing easier visual communication of the spread of the disease and better recognition of its trend. Conclusion The approach involves the simultaneous application of epidemic models and epidemic data geovisualization, which allows a simple and rapid evaluation of the epidemic situation and the effects of control measures. This contributes to more informative decision-making related to control measures by suggesting their selective application at the local level.

Abstract Aim To examine the nutritional status, dietary habits, attitudesand knowledge about the importance of proper nutritionand physical activity, as well as raising awareness of the activeeffects of proper nutrition on the performance, their psychophysicalactivity and general health throughout further growthand development. Methods The study was conducted by surveying 267 7–14 yearsold girls, participants of the Fun School Soccer tournamentin Travnik during 2012. The survey contained 22 questionsthat were related to the ingrained habits, related to their dietwhich the participants anonymously filled in.Results The results of the BMI showed that 94 (35.2%) studentshad a desirable body weight, 165 (61.8%) were thin andmalnourished, and 8 (3%) had increased body weight. Theaverage age of respondents was 13. Out of the total numberof surveyed participants 11 (4.1%) never consumed sweets, 28(10.5%) consumed less than once a week, 39 (14.6%) oncea week, 67 (25.1%) 2-4 days a week, 41 (15.4%) 5-6 days aweek, 36 (13.5%) once a day, every day, and 45 (16.9%) consumedsweets every day, several times a day. Conclusion The results indicate the existence of problems relatedto malnutrition and malnourishment. The introductionof teaching contents and various workshops on healthy eatingwould ensure timely correction of poor eating habits, and providethe possibility of forming a positive attitude about physicalactivity, health and aesthetic problems that can arise fromthat.
