Abstract Enterovirus infection is a known risk factor for type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Whether infection with other viruses induces T1DM remains undetermined. This study investigated the association between human herpesvirus (HHV) infection and the development of T1DM, using the data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with T1DM and age- and sex-matched controls were included. Subjects with HHV infection were subgrouped into those with histories of varicella-zoster virus, herpes simplex virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr virus, and human cytomegalovirus infections. The odds ratio of the risk of T1DM was calculated using a multivariable conditional logistic regression model. Atopic diseases, autoimmune thyroid diseases, and history of enterovirus infection served as adjusted comorbidities. Our findings suggested a significant association between HSV infection and the risk of T1DM (adjusted odds ratio: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.01-1.47,

Abstract Astaxanthin (AST) is a xanthophyll carotenoid with strong oxidation resistance, which can effectively scavenge various free radicals and protect organisms from oxidative damage. AST is also known to have prominent anti-aging effects, but the underlying mechanism of AST in anti-radiation aging is largely unknown. In this work, we applied ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to accelerate the aging of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and treated the nematodes with AST to explore whether and how AST could attenuate the radiation-induced aging effect. Our results showed that AST improved the survival rate of C. elegans, reduced the aging biomarkers, and alleviated the mitochondrial dysfunction caused by the irradiation. Based on the transcriptome sequencing analysis, we identified that the key genes regulated by AST were involved in JNK-MAPK and DAF-16 longevity signaling pathways. Furthermore, we employed jnk-1 and daf-16 mutants and verified the role of the JNK-1/DAF-16 signaling pathway in the anti-aging effect. As such, this study has not only demonstrated that AST can resist the aging process caused by UV-irradiation but also revealed the anti-aging mechanism of AST through JNK-1/DAF-16 activation in C. elegans.

Abstract The hotel industry is essential for tourism. With the rapid expansion of the internet, consumers only search for their desired keywords on the website when they trying to find a hotel to stay, causing the relevant hotel information would appear. To quickly respond to the changing market and consumer habits, each hotel must focus on its website information and information quality. This study proposes a novel methodology that uses rough set theory (RST), principal component analysis, t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), and attribute performance visualization to explore the relationship between hotel star ratings and hotel website information quality. The collected data are based on the star-rated hotels of the Taiwanstay website, and the checklists of hotel website services are used to obtain the relevant attributes data. The results show that there are significant differences in information quality between hotels below two stars and those above four stars. The information quality provided by the higher star hotels was more detailed than that offered by low-star hotels. Based on the attribute performance matrix, the one-star and two-star hotels have advantage attributes in their landscape, reply time, restaurant information, social media, and compensation. Furthermore, the three-five star hotels have advantage attributes in their operational support, compensation, restaurant information, traffic information, and room information. These results could be provided to the stakeholders as a reference.

The result of HSV infection remained significant when subjects were restricted to age ≤ 18 years (adjusted odds ratio: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.08–1.70, p = 0.010). We found a history of HSV infection might be an independent predictive risk factor for T1DM. This could be potentially helpful to the practice in public health.

Abstract Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is an aggressive gastrointestinal tumor. MiRNAs participate in the tumorigenesis of GC. Nevertheless, the function of miR-221-3p in GC remains largely unknown.
Methods: RNA levels were assessed by RT-qPCR. Western blot was performed to test the protein levels. The relation between miR-221-3p and ATF3 was investigated by dual-luciferase reporter assay. ChIP and dual-luciferase reporter assay were applied to assess the interaction between ATF3 and HRD1 or GPX4. Meanwhile, cell proliferation was investigated by CCK8 and colony formation assay. The content of erastin-induced Fe
Results: Depletion of miR-221-3p greatly attenuated GC cell proliferation through promoting ferroptosis. Meanwhile, ATF3 was downregulated in GC, and it was identified to be the downstream mRNA of miR-221-3p. MiR-221-3p downregulation could promoted the ferroptosis in GC cells through upregulation of ATF3. HRD1 mediates ubiquitination and degradation of ACSL4 to inhibit ferroptosis. ATF3 upregulation could reduce GC cell proliferation via downregulating the transcription of GPX4 and HRD1. Furthermore, downregulation of miR-221-3p markedly attenuated the growth of GC in mice.
Conclusion: HRD1 mediates ubiquitination and degradation of ACSL4 to inhibit ferroptosis. MiR-221-3p depletion upregulates the ferroptosis in GC cells via upregulation of ATF3 to mediate the transcription inhibition of GPX4 and HRD1. Our study might provide a novel target for GC treatment.

Abstract In Taiwan, the Integrated Home Care (IHC) project was introduced for medically compromised patients living at home receiving Home Health Care (HHC) in 2016. The focus of the project was on organizing care teams and managing care for patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits and impacts of IHC in Taiwan. The primary outcome measure was the mortality rate of patients who received IHC versus those who did not receive IHC (non-IHC). The secondary outcomes were medical utilization and expenditure. The results showed that IHC was associated with a statistically significant reduction in mortality compared to non-IHC for home-dwelling patients over 90-, 180-, and 365-days periods. Additionally, IHC users were less likely to be hospitalized and had shorter hospitalization times compared to non-IHC users. Furthermore, IHC was found to reduce medical expenditure compared to non-IHC.

Abstract Among the large series of marine natural products (MNPs), sulfur-containing MNPs have emerged as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of a range of diseases. Herein, we reviewed 95 new sulfur-containing MNPs isolated during the period between 2021 and March 2023. In addition, we discuss that the widely used strategies and the emerging technologies including natural product-based antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), small-molecule-based proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs), nanotechnology-based drug carriers, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven drug discovery have been used for improving the efficiency and success rate of NP-based drug development. We also provide perspectives regarding the challenges and opportunities in sulfur-containing MNPs based drug discovery and development and future research directions.

Abstract Taohong Siwu decoction (THSWD) is one of the classic prescriptions for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. With the continuous in-depth excavation in basic and clinical research, it has been found that THSWD has made greater progress in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Mechanisms of the current studies have shown that it could prevent and treat the myocardial injury by inhibiting inflammatory reaction, antioxidant stress, inhibiting platelet aggregation, prolonging clotting time, anti-fibrosis, reducing blood lipids, anti-atherosclerosis, improving hemorheology and vascular pathological changes, regulating related signal pathways and other mechanisms to prevent and treat the myocardial injury, so as to protect cardiomyocytes and improve cardiac function. Many clinical studies have shown that THSWD is effective in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases related to myocardial injuries, such as coronary heart disease angina pectoris (CHD-AP), and myocardial infarction. In clinical practice, it is often used by adding and subtracting prescriptions, the combination of compound prescriptions and combinations of chemicals and so on. However, there are some limitations and uncertainties in both basic and clinical research of prescriptions. According to the current research, although the molecular biological mechanism of various active ingredients needs to be further clarified, and the composition and dose of the drug have not been standardized and quantified, this study still has exploration for scientific research and clinical practice. Therefore, this review mainly discusses the basic mechanisms and clinical applications of THSWD in the prevention and treatment of the myocardial injury caused by CHD-AP and myocardial infarction. The authors hope to provide valuable ideas and references for researchers and clinicians.

Abstract The first total synthesis of aflaquinolone I (1), which represents the first example of natural occurring 3,4-dioxygenated 4-aryl-quinolin-2(1H)-one alkaloid with 3R, 4R configurations, was achieved in 9 and 4 steps by two parallel strategies, respectively. The key steps of the first approach included a base-catalyzed coupling reaction to forge α-hydroxyanilide and a diastereoselective aldol cyclization to construct the 3,4-dioxygenated-4-aryl-quinolin-2(1H)-one core. The second approach included a regioselective insertion of aryne into unsymmetric imide to build the N-glycolated 2-amino-benzophenone as a key step. In addition, the dehydrated product of aflaquinolone I, viridicatol (2), was successfully synthesized. We also achieved the chiral resolution of (±)-aflaquinolone I (1) and (±)-20, using chiral chromatography, and determined the absolute configuration of the enantiomers by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The absolute configuration of aflaquinolone I was further confirmed. Interestingly, we found that the ECD spectra of aflaquinolone I and its related analogues were affected by the substituted groups on C-4 phenyl group and C-3 hydroxy group.
