    Abstract Brewer's spent grain (BSG) is a main byproduct of the beer industry. BSG is rich in a variety of nutrients, and the search for its effective, high-value utilization is ongoing. Environmental probiotic factor γ-PGA was produced by fermenting Bacillus subtilis with BSG substrate and the fermenting grain components were analyzed. The γ-PGA yield reached 31.58 ± 0.21 g/kg of BSG. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and non-targeted metabolomics analyses revealed 73 new volatile substances in the fermenting grains. Furthermore, 2,376 metabolites were upregulated after fermentation and several components were beneficial for plant growth and development (such as ectoine, acetyl eugenol, L-phenylalanine, niacin, isoprene, pantothenic acid, dopamine, glycine, proline, jasmonic acid, etc). These results show that it is possible to synthesize adequate amounts of γ-PGA for use as a functional fertilizer.

    Abstract The longer the COVID-19 pandemic lasts, the more apparent it becomes that understanding its social drivers may be as important as understanding the virus itself. One such social driver is misinformation and distrust in institutions. This is particularly interesting as the scientific process is more transparent than ever before. Numerous scientific teams have published datasets that cover almost any imaginable aspects of COVID-19 during the last two years. However, consistently and efficiently integrating and making sense of these separate data “silos” to scientists, decision makers, journalists, and more importantly the general public remain a key challenge with important implications for transparency. Several types of knowledge graphs have been published to tackle this issue and to enable data crosswalks by providing rich contextual information. Interestingly, none of these graphs has focused on COVID-19 forecasts despite them acting as the underpinning for decision making. In this work we motivate the need for exposing forecasts as a knowledge graph, showcase queries that run against the graph, and geographically interlink forecasts with indicators of economic impacts.

    Abstract Photothermal therapy (PTT) usually causes hyperthermia and damages healthy tissues. Developing a PTT platform with enhanced therapeutic effects and reduced side effects to normal tissues attracts increasing attention. Herein, we developed a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) loaded with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agent (new indocyanine green IR820), fluorescence imaging agent (ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots, QDs) and autophagy inhibitor (chloroquine, CQ). These PLGA/IR820/Fluorescence imaging agent/CQ co-loading nanoparticles (termed PIFC NPs) displayed photothermal effects, enhanced the stability of IR820 in vivo, and enabled QDs to have stable fluorescent signals in vitro and in vivo. The PIFC NPs with particle size around 240 nm aggregated to tumor sites through the high permeability and retention effects of solid tumors. The intracellular delivery of CQ molecules through PIFC NPs significantly attenuated the degradation of autophagic lysosomes in tumor cells and effectively inhibited the autophagy mediated repair of photothermal damaged cells. Under milder NIR irradiation conditions, PIFC NPs exhibited high antitumor effect. By regulating autophagy, PTT can be effectively sensitized, which will provide a new idea for future cancer treatment research.

    Abstract Identifying determinants of tourist destination choice is an important task in the study of nature-based tourism. Traditionally, the study of tourist behavior relies on survey data and travel logs, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming. Thanks to location-based social networks, more detailed data is available at a finer grained spatio-temporal scale. This allows for better insights into travel patterns and interactions between attractions, e.g., parks. Meanwhile, such data sources also bring along a novel social influence component that has not yet been widely studied in terms of travel decisions. For example, social influencers post about certain places, which tend to influence destination choices of tourists. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a socially aware Huff model to account for this social factor in the study of destination choice. Moreover, with fine-grained social media data, interactions between attractions (i.e., the neighboring effects) can be better quantified and thus integrated into models as another factor. In our experiment, we calibrate a model by using trip sequences extracted from geotagged Flickr photos within two national parks in the United States. Our results demonstrate that the socially aware Huff model better simulates tourist travel preferences. In addition, we explore the significance of each factor and summarize the spatial-temporal travel pattern for each attraction. The socially aware Huff model and the calibration method can be applied to other fields such as promotional marketing.

    Abstract Geoparsing, the task of extracting toponyms from texts and associating them with geographic locations, has witnessed remarkable progress over the past years. However, despite its intrinsically geospatial nature, existing evaluations tend to focus on overall performance while paying little attention to its variation across geographic space. In this work, we attempt to answer the question whether geoparsing is solved or biased by conducting a spatially-explicit evaluation, namely an evaluation of the regional variability in geoparsing performance. Particularly, we will analyze the spatial autocorrelation underlying this regional variability. By performing hot and cold spot detection over results of several open-source geoparsers, we observe that none of them performs equally well across geographic space, and some are geographically biased towards some regions but against others. We also carry out a comparative experiment showing that stateof- the-art geoparsers developed with neural networks do not necessarily outperform the off-the-shelf tools across geographic space. To understand the implications behind this observed regional variability, we evaluate geographic biases involved in geoparsing research centered around data contribution and usage, algorithm design, and performance evaluations. Particularly, our spatially-explicit performance evaluation serves as an approach to evaluation bias mitigation in geoparsing.We conclude that previous performance evaluations published in the literature are overly optimistic, thus hiding the fact that geoparsing is far from solved, and geoparsers require debiasing in addition to further considerations when being applied to (geospatial) downstream tasks.

    Abstract Virus threatens seriously life health. The accurate early diagnosis of the virus is vital for clinical control and treatment of virus infection. Aptamers are small single-stranded oligonucleotides (DNAs or RNAs). In this review, we summarized aptasensors of viral detection in recent years according to the classification of the viral target protein and illustrated common detection mechanisms in the aptasensor (colorimetry, fluorescence assay, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy (SERS), electrochemical detection, and field-effect transistor (FET)). Furthermore, aptamers against the different target proteins of the same viruses were summarized. The relationships between the different biomarkers of the viruses and the detection methods and their performances were revealed. In addition, the challenges and future directions of aptasensors were discussed. This review will provide valuable references for constructing on-site aptasensors for detecting viruses, especially the SARS-CoV-2.

    Abstract While the paths humans take play out in social as well as physical space, measures to describe and compare their trajectories are carried out in abstract, typically Euclidean, space. When these measures are applied to trajectories of actual individuals in an application area, alterations that are inconsequential in abstract space may suddenly become problematic once overlaid with geographic reality. In this work, we present a different view on trajectory similarity by introducing a measure that utilizes logical entailment. This is an inferential perspective that considers facts as triple statements deduced from the social and environmental context in which the travel takes place, and their practical implications. We suggest a formalization of entailment-based trajectory similarity, measured as the overlapping proportion of facts, which are spatial relation statements in our case study. With the proposed measure, we evaluate LSTM-TrajGAN, a privacy-preserving trajectory-generation model. The entailment-based model evaluation reveals potential consequences of disregarding the rich structure of geographic space (e.g., miscalculated insurance risk due to regional shifts in our toy example). Our work highlights the advantage of applying logical entailment to trajectory-similarity reasoning for location-privacy protection and beyond.

    Abstract Conventional cancer phototherapy with single modality suffers from low therapeutic efficacy and undesired posttreatment damage for adjacent normal tissues. Therefore, the lower NIR laser irradiation power is vital to the reduction or preclusion of risk of scalds and burns in normal tissues. Herein, we rationally proposed a novel multifunctional nanocomplex, which enabled good magnetic resonance (MR) imaging contrast effect and promising photothermal conversion efficacy. The prepared core/shell nanocomplexes [MSN-Ce6@PDA (Mn)] were composed of chlorin e6-embedded mesoporous silica/nanoparticle composites as the cores, and then polydopamine and manganese ions were conjugated on the cores to form protective shells. The MSN-Ce6@PDA (Mn) nanocomplexes revealed superior properties in colloidal stability, photothermal conversion, reaction oxygen species generation, magnetic resonance imaging, etc. Under the guidance of MR and fluorescence imaging, these MSN-Ce6@PDA (Mn) nanocomplexes were found to be primarily accumulated in the MDA-MB-231 tumor area. Furthermore, the combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy exhibited strong inhibition to the growth of MDA-MB-231 tumor

    Abstract Polydopamine (PDA) has attracted much attention recently due to its strong adhesion capability to most substrates. After combining with organic (such as organic metal framework, micelles, hydrogel, polypeptide copolymer) or inorganic nanomaterials (such as gold, silicon, carbon), polydopamine-based nanoparticles (PDA NPs) exhibit the merging of characteristics. Until now, the preparation methods, polymerization mechanism, and photothermal therapy (PTT) or chemotherapy (CT) applications of PDA NPs have been reported detailly. Since the PTT or CT treatment process is often accompanied by exogenous stimuli, tumor cells usually induce pro-survival autophagy to protect the cells from further damage, which will weaken the therapeutic effect. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of PDA NPs modulated PTT, CT, and autophagy is required. However, this association is rarely reviewed. Herein, we briefly described the relationship between PTT/CT, autophagy, and tumor treatment. Then, the outstanding performances of PDA NPs in PTT/CT and their combination with autophagy inhibitors for tumor synergistic therapy have been summarized. This work is expected to shed light on the multi-strategy antitumor therapy applications of PDA NPs.
