    Abstract Plants select microorganisms from the surrounding bulk soil, which act as a reservoir of microbial diversity and enrich a rhizosphere microbiome that helps in growth and stress alleviation. Plants use organic compounds that are released through root exudates to shape the rhizosphere microbiome. These organic compounds are of various spectrums and technically gear the interplay between plants and the microbial world. Although plants naturally produce organic compounds that influence the microbial world, numerous efforts have been made to boost the efficiency of the microbiome through the addition of organic compounds. Despite further crucial investigations, synergistic effects from organic compounds and beneficial bacteria combinations have been reported. In this review, we examine the relationship between organic compounds and beneficial bacteria in determining plant growth and biotic and abiotic stress alleviation. We investigate the molecular mechanism and biochemical responses of bacteria to organic compounds, and we discuss the plant growth modifications and stress alleviation done with the help of beneficial bacteria. We then exhibit the synergistic effects of both components to highlight future research directions to dwell on how microbial engineering and metagenomic approaches could be utilized to enhance the use of beneficial microbes and organic compounds.

    Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine anomalies among females of reproductive age, highlighted by hyperandrogenism. PCOS is multifactorial as it can be associated with obesity, insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation, and dyslipidemia. PCOS also leads to dysbiosis by lowering microbial diversity and beneficial microbes, such as Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, Akkermenisa, and Bifidobacterium, and by causing a higher load of opportunistic pathogens, such as Escherichia/Shigella, Fusobacterium, Bilophila, and Sutterella. Wherein, butyrate producers and Akkermansia participate in the glucose uptake by inducing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose metabolism, respectively. The abovementioned gut microbes also maintain the gut barrier function and glucose homeostasis by releasing metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and Amuc_1100 protein. In addition, PCOS-associated gut is found to be higher in gut-microbial enzyme β-glucuronidase, causing the de-glucuronidation of conjugated androgen, making it susceptible to reabsorption by entero-hepatic circulation, leading to a higher level of androgen in the circulatory system. Overall, in PCOS, such dysbiosis increases the gut permeability and LPS in the systemic circulation, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in the circulatory system, chronic inflammation in the adipose tissue and liver, and oxidative stress and lipid accumulation in the liver. Thus, in women with PCOS, dysbiosis can promote the progression and severity of type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). To alleviate such PCOS-associated complications, microbial therapeutics (probiotics and fecal microbiome transplantation) can be used without any side effects, unlike in the case of hormonal therapy. Therefore, this study sought to understand the mechanistic significance of gut microbes in PCOS and associated comorbidities, along with the role of microbial therapeutics that can ease the life of PCOS-affected women.

    Abstract Pesticides, protect crops but can harm the environment and human health when used without caution. This study evaluated the impact of propiconazole, a fungicide that acts on fungal cell membranes, on soil microbiome abundance, diversity, and functional profile, as well as soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA). The study conducted microcosm experiments using soil samples treated with propiconazole and employed next-generation sequencing (MiSeq) and chromatographic approaches (GC-MS/MS) to analyze the shift in microbial communities and propiconazole level, respectively. The results showed that propiconazole significantly altered the distribution of microbial communities, with notable changes in the abundance of various bacterial and fungal taxa. Among soil bacterial communities, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Planctomycetota increased, while that of Acidobacteria decreased after propiconazole treatment. In the fungal communities, propiconazole increased the abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota in the treated soil, while that of Mortierellomycota was reduced. Fungicide application further triggered a significant decrease in DHA over time. Analysis of the functional profile of bacterial communities showed that propiconazole significantly affected bacterial cellular and metabolic pathways. The carbon degradation pathway was upregulated, indicating the microbial detoxification of the contaminant in the treated soil. Our findings suggest that propiconazole application has a discernible impact on soil microbial communities, which could have long-term consequences for soil health, quality, and function.

    Abstract Rationale: Plasmacytoma is a disease caused by the proliferation of monoclonal immunoglobulin-producing plasma cells and divided into multiple myeloma, solitary bone plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma. We report a case of orbital extramedullary plasmacytoma invading the dura mater in a patient with exophthalmos and diplopia.
    Patient concerns: A 35-year-old female patient with exophthalmos in the right eye and diplopia visited the clinic.
    Diagnoses: The thyroid function tests showed nonspecific results. Orbital computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogeneously enhancing orbital mass infiltrating the right maxillary sinus and adjacent brain tissue in the middle cranial fossa through the superior orbital fissure.
    Interventions: To diagnose and alleviate the symptoms, an excisional biopsy was performed, which revealed a plasmacytoma.
    Outcomes: One month after the surgery, the protruding symptoms and eye movement restriction in the right eye improved, and the visual acuity in the right eye was restored.
    Lessons: In this case report, we present a case of an extramedullary plasmacytoma that originated in the inferior wall of the orbit and invaded the cranial cavity. To our knowledge, no previous reports have described a solitary plasmacytoma that originated in the orbit, causing exophthalmos and invading the cranial cavity at the same time.

    Abstract Rationale: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by headache, convulsions, altered consciousness, and visual disturbance with specific radiological features, which is characterized by contrast enhancement in the occipital lobe on T2-weighted image. We report a case of sudden visual impairment of both eyes 6 days after childbirth diagnosed as postpartum preeclampsia and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) through radiological examination.
    Patient concerns: A 31-year-old female patient with headache and visual disturbance visited the clinic.
    Diagnosis: Visual acuity was light perception in the right eye and hand motion in the left eye; pupillary light reflections of both eyes were normal. In the field of view test, the waveform was not observed in the defect pattern visual field power test, and the amplitude was greatly reduced in the visual field test. 1+ proteinuria was observed on urine test and magnetic resonance imaging showed contrast enhancement under both parietal and occipital cortex.
    Interventions: Hospitalization was done for blood pressure control and examination of related disease under suspicion of PRES caused by postpartum preeclampsia.
    Outcomes: Four weeks after diagnosis, vision and visual field defects recovered to normal, and the previously observed lesion on magnetic resonance imaging completely improved 3 months after the initial visit, and it was diagnosed as PRES.
    Lessons: PRES in postpartum preeclampsia can cause rapid vision and symptoms, visual field loss, and accurate follow-up diagnosis with relevant imaging and clinical patterns can improve vision.

    Abstract In the present study, we aimed to investigate age-, cryptorchidism-, and testicular tumor-related changes in miRNAs in the testis and epididymis of dogs. Twelve healthy male dogs were divided into two groups: young (<1 year, n = 8) and old (>3 years, n = 4). Five dogs with unilateral cryptorchidism, one with a Sertoli cell tumor, and one with seminoma were referred to a veterinary hospital. After surgery, the testes and epididymis tails were collected. A high-throughput miRNA array analysis was performed to identify miRNAs affected by age, cryptorchidism, and testicular tumors. The expression of only cfa-miR-503 was downregulated in the epididymis of younger dogs, whereas the expression of 64 miRNAs was upregulated. Among them, the top five miRNAs were cfa-miR-26a, cfa-miR-200c, cfa-let-7c, cfa-let-7b, and cfa-let-7a. The expression of cfa-miR-148a and cfa-miR-497 was considerably lower in cryptorchid testis than in healthy dog testis. In the epididymis, the cfa-miR-1841 level was significantly decreased. We observed a significant difference in the expression of 26 cfa-miRNAs between testicular tumors and normal tissues. This study demonstrated that aging and cryptorchidism have a causal relationship with miRNA expression. The identified miRNAs may be candidate genes for male reproductive traits and could be applied in molecular breeding programs.

    Abstract A long-running need in carbon fiber composite production is to ameliorate interfacial adhesion between the polymer and carbon fibers. Here, we present a convenient and feasible strategy for controlling the carbon fiber's surface in a continuous process: syntheses of click-modified silanes via copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction and grafting them onto fiber surfaces which prepare a latent curable platform under mild processes without postmodification. As 1,2,3-triazole moieties from the click reaction were added to the epoxy/dicyandiamide system, they triggered additional reactions in the later conversion stage; approximately, a 20% increase in the total reaction enthalpy compared to the system with no additives was obtained. We expected the enhanced cross-linking between the surface and matrix to expand the interfacial area, leading to reinforcements on interfacial adhesion and stress-transfer abilities within composites. The merit of the approach is well-demonstrated by conductive atomic force microscopy, showing that the interphase can be extended up to 6-fold when the triazole platform acts as curatives and serve as bridges after the epoxy cure. Consequently, the composite's interfacial shear strength and interlaminar shear strength were increased up to 78 and 72%, respectively. This work affords a reactive platform where a custom-tailored fiber/matrix interface can be designed by virtue of versatility in clickable reactants.

    Abstract Measurement of contact angle is important in many areas of science and engineering research. Contact angle analyzers are however not easily accessible due to their expensive cost, which hinders their use in research and also in education. In this study we propose a low-cost contact angle analyzer that can be assembled with 3D printed parts. Mobile phone is used for imaging, and the image is analyzed using an open-source ImageJ plugin. Commercial camera tripods are used as platform that provides movement in many degrees of freedom, which are important in leveling of the substrate and proper imaging of droplets. We utilize the tripods to build imaging modules, sample plate module and volume metering module, each of which perform distinct tasks. Especially, we characterize the usefulness of the volume metering module, which helps users dispense same volume of liquid to reduce human error during measurement. The cost of an analyzer is $255.10, which is an order of magnitude lower compared to commercial products. With the advancement in open source software and upgrades in the hardware modules, we expect that the proposed contact angle analyzer to have a positive impact in resource limited research labs and educational environments.

    Abstract Microglial polarization plays an essential role in the progression and regression of neurodegenerative disorders. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), a dietary anthocyanin found in many fruits and vegetables, has been reported as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor agent. However, there have been no reports on whether C3G can regulate the M1/M2 shift in an Alzheimer's disease model. We attempted to investigate the effects of C3G on M1/M2 polarization and the mechanism to regulate anti-inflammation and phagocytosis, both in vitro and in vivo. HMC3 cells were treated with β-amyloid (Aβ42) in the presence or absence of 50 μM C3G for different time intervals, and APPswe/PS1ΔE9 mice were orally administered 30 mg/kg/day of C3G for 38 weeks. The in vitro data revealed that C3G could shift the M1 phenotype of microglia to M2 by reducing the expression of M1-specific markers (CD86 and CD80), inflammatory cytokines (IL-Iβ, IL-6, TNF-α), reactive oxygen species, and enhancing the expression of M2-specific markers (CD206 and CD163). The APPswe/PS1ΔE9 mice results were consistent with the in vitro data, indicating a significant reduction in inflammatory cytokines and higher expression of M2-specific markers such as CD206 and Arg1 in C3G-treated Alzheimer's disease model mice. Additionally, C3G was found to upregulate PPARγ expression levels both in vitro and in vivo, whereas a PPARγ antagonist (GW9662) was found to block C3G-mediated effects in vitro. In this study, we confirmed that C3G could regulate microglial polarization by activating PPARγ and eliminating accumulated β-amyloid by enhancing Aβ42 phagocytosis through the upregulation of TREM2.
