    Abstract The health benefits of dietary fiber are widely recognized, but its impact on muscle health remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the relationship between dietary fiber intake and muscle strength through a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Korea National Health and Examination Survey (KNHANES). Data from a single 24-h dietary recall and handgrip strength tests of 10,883 younger adults aged 19 to 64 years and 3,961 older adults aged ≥ 65 years were analyzed. Low muscle strength was defined as handgrip strength < 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the association of dietary fiber intake with muscle strength. Approximately 43% of Korean adults met the recommended intake of dietary fiber, and those with higher dietary fiber consumption also had higher total energy and protein intake. After adjusting for confounding variables, dietary fiber intake was found to be positively associated with maximal handgrip strength in younger women aged 19 to 64 years (β = 0.015; standard error [SE] = 0.006) and older men aged ≥ 65 years (β = 0.035; SE = 0.014). For older women aged ≥ 65 years, those in the lowest quartile of dietary fiber intake had a higher risk of low muscle strength than those in the highest quartile after adjustment of confounders (odds ratio 1.709; 95% confidence interval 1.130-2.585). These results suggest that adequate dietary fiber intake may reduce the risk of sarcopenia in older Korean women.

    Abstract Introduction: Pilots of high-performance F15 and F16 jets must undergo periodic assessment of +8.5 Gz tolerance in a centrifuge, which is classified as a high-intensity exercise. Prior research has indicated that exercise performance may be correlated with alpha-actinin3 (ACTN3) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) genes, frequently termed the sports genes. This study aimed to investigate how ACTN3 and ACE genotypes correlate with high-g tolerance of Korean F15 and F16 pilots.
    Materials and methods: A total of 81 Korean F15 and F16 pilots (ages 25-39 years) volunteered to participate in human centrifuge testing at +8.5 Gz. Exercise tolerance was calculated as the mean breathing interval during high-g tests, the target gene genotypes (ACTN3 and ACE) were identified, and body composition measurements were measured. The relationship among the ACTN3 and ACE genotypes, high-g tolerance, and body compositions were evaluated.
    Results: The ACTN3 genotypes identified included 23 RR (28.4%), 41 RX (50.6%), and 17 XX (21.0%). The ACE genotypes identified included 13 DD (16.0%), 39 DI (48.2%), and 29 II (35.8%). Both genes satisfied an equilibrium check. In multivariate analysis by Roy's max, the interaction of the target genes (ACTN3 and ACE) was significant (P < .05). The ACTN3 gene showed significance (P < .05), while ACE tended toward significance with a correlation of P = .057 with high-g tolerance(s). Body composition parameters including height, body weight, muscle mass, body mass index, body fat (%), and basal metabolic rate showed no significant correlation with either genotype.
    Conclusion: In a preliminary study, the RR ACTN3 genotype showed a significant correlation with +8.5 Gz tolerance. Pilots with the DI genotype showed the highest high-g tolerance in this test; however, the test pass rate was higher in pilots with the DD genotype in the preliminary study. This result shows the possibility of test passing and tolerance superiority consisting of two different factors in the relationship between high-g tolerance and ACE genotype. This study showed that pilots with the RR + DI genotype had the highest high-g tolerance, which correlated with the presence of the R and D alleles of the ACTN3 and ACE genes, respectively. However, body composition parameters were not significantly correlated with genotype. These results could suggest a plural gene effect on high-g tolerance; further follow-up is required to determine the practical usage and applications of these results.

    Abstract Manipulating the transport and assembly of colloidal particles to form segregated bands or ordered supracolloidal structures plays an important role in many aspects of science and technology, from understanding the origin of life to synthesizing new materials for next-generation manufacturing, electronics, and therapeutics. One commonly used method to direct colloidal transport and assembly is the application of electric fields, either AC or DC, due to its feasibility. However, as colloidal segregation and assembly both require active redistribution of colloidal particles across multiple length scales, it is not apparent at first sight how a DC electric field, either externally applied or internally induced, can lead to colloidal structuring. In this Perspective, we briefly review and highlight recent advances and standing challenges in colloidal transport and assembly enabled by DC electrokinetics.

    Abstract Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) modulate metabolic, oxidative, and inflammatory responses, and the physiological effects of LCFA are determined by chain length and the degree of saturation. Adipose tissues comprise multiple cell types, and play a significant role in energy storage and expenditure. Fatty acid uptake and oxidation are the pathways through which fatty acids participate in the regulation of energy homeostasis, and their dysregulation can lead to the development of obesity and chronic obesity-related disorders, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. Numerous studies have reported that many aspects of adipose tissue biology are influenced by the number and position of double bonds in LCFA, and these effects are mediated by various signaling pathways, including those regulating adipocyte differentiation (adipogenesis), thermogenesis, and inflammation in adipose tissue. This review aims to describe the underlying molecular mechanisms by which different types of LCFA influence adipose tissue metabolism, and to further clarify their relevance to metabolic dysregulation associated with obesity. A better understanding of the effects of LCFA on adipose tissue metabolism may lead to improved nutraceutical strategies to address obesity and obesity-associated diseases.

    Abstract Objectives: To identify nurses' caring behaviours toward patients with left ventricular assist devices and deepen their understanding of experiences in nursing care. Patients with left ventricular assist devices require care in many aspects, but there is limited in-depth research about caring behaviours and experiences from the perspective of nurses providing care.
    Research methodology/design: Mixed methods study with a sequential explanatory design. Data were collected from clinical nurses with experience caring for patients using left ventricular assist devices in South Korea between May-August 2022.
    Main outcome measures: Quantitative data (n = 79) were collected through an online survey of the Caring Behaviours Inventory - 24 and analysed using descriptive statistics. For qualitative data (n = 15), nurses' caring experiences were collected through individual interviews and analysed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method.
    Results: The overall average of caring behaviours was 4.80 ± 0.85, specifically, 'knowledge and skill' (5.04 ± 0.78), 'assurance' (5.01 ± 0.79), 'respect' (4.85 ± 0.90), and 'connectedness' (4.04 ± 0.99), respectively. The experience of caring was trapped in the uncomfortable reality of left ventricular assist device nursing, causing device-focused care, and approaching the essence of nursing through care focused on the patient's wholeness.
    Conclusions: Caring for patients with a left ventricular assist devices was challenging for nurses. However, through the care process, they realised the meaning of patient-centred care, reflected in the essence of nursing, and sublimated it into an opportunity to grow.
    Implications for clinical practice: Nurses must focus on patient-centred care for left ventricular assist devices. To achieve this, it is essential to create a clinical environment and educational system for nurses to provide effective nursing care and enhance patient participation.

    Abstract Self-care in daily life is important for patients with a left ventricular assist device. Mobile health interventions that use an application, the cloud, or telemonitoring enable active health management. This study reviewed the literature on the contents of mobile health interventions for patients with left ventricular assist devices and their effects. We searched four electronic databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and MEDLINE) and reference lists in May 2022. The search terms consisted of "heart-assist devices" and "residence characteristics," combined with "mobile applications," "telemonitoring," "medical informatics applications," "cell*," "app*," "smartphone," and "cloud." In total, seven studies were included in the review. Mobile health interventions included (1) self-management contents and (2) interactions between patient and healthcare providers. The mobile health device and patient's health management were evaluated as a measure of the effect. This review provides a unique understanding for leveraging mobile health interventions as an effective approach to improve healthcare among patients with left ventricular assist devices. Future mobile health intervention strategies targeting these patients should fully consider the patient's perspective. Furthermore, they should be designed and applied to help with long-term health management, accompanied by an evaluation of their effectiveness on self-care improvement.

    Abstract Background: Nursing handoff competency is the ability of the nurse performing the handoff to select and interpret the necessary information for patient care and to convey it efficiently to the nurse accepting the handoff. Nursing handoff is an important nursing task that ensures nursing care continuity, quality and patient safety. This study aimed to develop a scale to measure nursing handoff competency and verify its validity and reliability.
    Methods: This study adopted a methodological design. A research process included three phases: (1) scale development (literature review and interviews); (2) scale validation (validity and reliability); (3) standard setting. Data were collected from 496 clinical nurses currently working in hospital wards, intensive care units, and emergency rooms, and who independently perform a handoff in South Korea.
    Results: The final scale comprises a self-reported 4-points Ilert scale with 25 items based on four factors: knowledge on handoff methods, identification of patient information, judgment and transfer of nursing situation, and "formation of supportive relationships. Construct validity, criterion-related validity, and discrimination validities were verified and the fitness of the scale revealed good results in confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach's α of the whole tool was.912 and the cut-off score for satisfied/unsatisfied was.72.
    Conclusions: The developed scale can evaluate the nurse's handoff competencies and determine whether training is necessary. The measurement results of the scale can be used to select training subjects and compose the contents of the education program.

    Abstract The effect of using smartphones while walking on the cognitive and physical abilities of the "digital native" generation, i.e., individuals who have grown up in a digital media-centric environment, remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of cognitive-motor interference on the use of smartphones while walking in children and young adults. The study involved 50 individuals from the digital age generation, including 24 children and 26 young adults. The study encompassed three experimental conditions, in which participants were instructed to traverse a distance of 60 m. The initial condition functioned as a control, wherein the participants walked without supplementary stimuli. In the second condition, the participants were provided with explicit instructions to grasp the smartphone device and position it in front of their chest by using both hands. This manipulation introduced a postural component into the experimental setup. The third condition required participants to be ambulatory while concurrently engaging in a cognitive task, namely, participating in a game that necessitated focused attention. Gait parameters were obtained by using inertial measurement unit sensors. Subsequently, the acquired gait characteristics were converted into dual-task costs (DTC). In the cognitive condition, children exhibited significantly greater DTC values for gait speed (76%), stride length (79%), stride time (102%), and stride length coefficient of variation (CV) than the young adults (p < 0.025).
