Abstract Tinnitus is conscious auditory perception without corresponding external stimuli resulting from neuronal activity along auditory pathway either in peripheral or central auditory system. The exact origin, pathophysiologic pathway and its treatment is still under exploration. The main risk factor is hearing loss, but can occur in patients with normal hearing. Auditory brainstem response test helps to objectify this subjective complaint and aid in locating its origin. P300 is late latency auditory evoked potential, objective marker of cognitive potential. The purpose of our study was to ascertain any significant difference in P300 latency and amplitude values in cases of sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus when compared to controls (normal hearing subjects) and also to find any correlation between severity of tinnitus and cognition. This was a case control study conducted at the department of ENT at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi between September 2016 to March 2018. The study comprised of one hundred and six patients, out of which fifty five patients were having sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus and fifty one patients were normal hearing subjects. General medical and audiological history and examination was done. Significant increase in P300 latency and decrease in P300 amplitude was found in sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus cases on comparing with controls. The similar pattern of P300 values was observed on increasing severity of tinnitus and degree of hearing loss. Hence, results revealed the role of cognition and involvement of central auditory pathway in tinnitus generation.

Abstract Background: Suicide results from complex interactions of various risk factors-reasons for dying (RFD)-and protective factors-reasons for living (RFL). Suicide is not necessarily a wish to die but may be an appeal for help. We analyzed RFD and RFL in persons who had attempted suicide, through their clinical records at a Crisis Intervention Clinic (CIC).
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed demographic and clinical data, and classified RFD and RFL, among patients with either ideas or attempt of suicide registered at our CIC (
Results: In the total sample, males and females were equally represented and educated, but males were significantly older. Most common diagnosis was nonpsychotic mood disorder. Commonest mode of suicide attempt was hanging. Family conflict vs. family responsibility, hope vs. hopelessness, stressful life events, and negative cognitions about the self and the world were important RFD. RFL included feeling responsible, love for family and for self, hope, career success, and religious beliefs.
Conclusion: RFD and RFL could both be grouped in similar categories related to family, career, hope, etc.

Abstract Olanzapine, a second-generation antipsychotic, is used for management in a number of psychiatric illnesses. Here we report two cases of olanzapine-induced facial edema which resolved spontaneously on stopping the drug. Although a benign side effect, it led to patient and caregiver distress.

Abstract Young men presenting with sexual problems arising out of non-contact like semen loss syndrome are common in the Indian subcontinent. They usually present with depressive, anxiety symptoms, and non-specific somatic complaints. This has no medical explanation and is currently conceptualized as a culture bound neurotic disorder in the International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10), clinical descriptions, and diagnostic guidelines. In this report, we present the case of a young male who developed delusions following concerns about semen loss. Conflicting explanations about his illness between traditional and allopathic practitioners led to problems in management. The importance of creating awareness among traditional practitioners regarding contemporary allopathic models of illness is stressed. Management strategies employed should reflect this shared understanding.

Abstract Background: Intent in attempted suicide is considered an indicator of subsequent suicide. Few studies in developing countries have examined correlates of suicidal intent among young adults.
Aims: This study aimed to assess the intent score among a sample of young suicide attempters from South India and to identify the factors associated with suicide intent among them.
Method: The clinical charts of 64 consecutive subjects aged 15-24 years attending emergency services for attempted suicide were reviewed. All participants completed a semistructured proforma, the Presumptive Stressful Life Events Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, the Pierce Suicide Intent Scale, and the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale. Psychiatric diagnoses were made according to the ICD-10 clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines.
Results: The intent scores were in the moderate-to-high range for most subjects. Suicide intent score significantly varied depending on the presence or absence of psychiatric morbidity. In bivariate analysis, psychiatric morbidity and hopelessness correlated positively with suicide intent, and in linear regression, hopelessness emerged as a predictor of suicide intent.
Conclusion: A high intent of suicide in young is associated with psychiatric morbidity and presence of hopelessness. Hopelessness may be a key predictor of suicidal intent. Assessment of suicidal intent and hopelessness among young attempters is important and may help identify high-risk individuals who need intensive interventions.
