    Abstract Boron, as borate (or boric acid), is known as a mediator of the synthesis of ribose, ribonucleosides, and ribonucleotides (precursors of RNA) under plausible prebiotic conditions. With regard to these phenomena, the potential participation of this chemical element (as a constituent of minerals or hydrogels) for the emergence of prebiological homochirality is considered. This hypothesis is based on characteristics of crystalline surfaces as well as solubility of some minerals of boron in water or specific features of hydrogels with ester bonds from reaction of ribonucleosides and borate.

    Abstract Meat deterioration during processing, distribution, and display can compromise the quality and safety of products, causing several undesirable changes and decreasing products’ shelf-life, which has a negative impact on the industry and consumers. In recent years, studies have been carried out using decontamination techniques and new packaging methodologies to overcome deterioration problems, increase sustainability, and reduce waste. Edible films and coatings obtained from biopolymers such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, combined with active compounds, can be an alternative approach. This article focused on recent studies that used alternative biodegradable polymeric matrices in conjunction with natural compounds with antioxidant/antimicrobial activity on chicken meat. Its impact on physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics was evident, as well as the effect on its shelf-life. In general, different combinations of active edible films or coatings had a positive effect on the chicken meat. Different studies reported that the main results were a decrease in microbial growth and pathogen survival, a slowdown in lipid oxidation evolution, and an improvement in sensory quality and shelf-life (an increase from 4 to 12 days).

    Abstract As an alternative to commercial whole egg thermal pasteurization (TP), the sequential combination of moderate pressure (MP) and/or ultrasound (US) pre-treatments prior to a shorter TP was evaluated. The use of US alone or in combination with MP or TP resulted in an inactivation that was far from that of commercial TP. Nevertheless, when these three technologies were combined (MP–US–TP, 160 MPa/5 min–50% amplitude/1 min–60 °C/1.75 min), a safety level comparable to that of commercial TP was established. This was likely due to a decrease in the thermal resistance of Salmonella Senftenberg 775/W caused by MP and US pre-treatments. Regarding liquid whole egg (LWE) properties, using raw LWE as a reference, TP and MP treatments each decreased protein solubility (7–12%), which was accompanied by a viscosity increment (41–59%), whereas the US-only and MP–US–TP treatments improved protein solubility (about 4%) and reduced viscosity (about 34%). On average, all treatments lowered the emulsifying properties of LWE by 35–63%, with the MP–US–TP treatment having a more dramatic impact than commercial TP. In addition, the US-only, MP-only, and MP–US–TP treatments had the greatest impact on the volatile profile of LWE, lowering the concentration of the total volatile components. In comparison to commercial TP, LWE treated with MP–US–TP exhibited greater protein solubility (19%), lower viscosity (56%), and comparable emulsifying stability, but with a decreased emulsifying capacity (39%) and a lower total volatile compounds content (77%). Considering that a combined treatment (MP–US–TP) is lethally equivalent to commercial TP, but the latter better retained the quality properties of raw LWE, including volatiles, the application of MP followed by US pre-treatments before a shorter TP did not demonstrate significant advantages on quality parameters in comparison to commercial TP.

    Abstract This analysis of over 90,000 secondary battery innovations (measured by international patent families) provides a comprehensive account of the long-run progress of a knowledge base with a key role in the transition to a transformative, closed-loop, Circular Economy. Innovation accelerated globally from 2000 to 2019, a sustained dynamic mostly originating in Asia. Patterns of less toxicity and more diversity in technological trajectories are detected and found to bear evidence of pro-circularity. We find a number of emergent technological trajectories, such as solid-state, lithium–sulfur, redox-flow and sodium-ion batteries, each one with a different potential to push ahead the circularity pathway, and which allow for the detection of country clusters. Through a methodology that can be of interest for further research, we examine the extent to which batteries have circular characteristics.

    Abstract Fruits and vegetables are responsible for about 22% of food losses and wastes along the supply chain (not including the retail level). However, fruit and vegetable by-products (FVB) may be transformed into fibre-rich flours and bioactive compounds, mainly bound to the fibre, thus bringing value to the food industry due to health benefits and technological functionality. Therefore, these by-products have great potential to be applied in several food industries. The most common strategy is transforming these by-products into ingredients, and there are some processing strategies for transforming these by-products into dried ingredients - flours. Hence, this review aimed to unveil the most straightforward processes already available and discussed in the literature, allowing an easier implementation at an industrial level, thus achieving an actual application and valorisation of these by-products. The food products where these flours have been applied and the effects on the final products' physicochemical characteristics and health attributes are also critically reviewed.
