Abstract It is on the sharp end of the O&G operations where the real work happens, but also where the highest risks and system demands are placed. Understanding the skills-technical and non-technical-necessary to perform efficiently and safely is not only needed to maintain the business and assets, but also to ensure the safety of lives and the environment. Accidents such as Piper Alpha (1988), P-36 (2001) and Deepwater Horizon (2010) highlight the importance of understanding the real role of the human element in these events, from the highest hierarchical levels to the sharp end, where the work as done takes place. This article presents a non-technical skills analysis focused on the sharp end of O&G operations, specifically in the facilities/utilities operations, onshore (refineries) and offshore (production platforms). The findings show the importance and presence of certain non-technical skills, as well as the need for improvement of others in the daily routine and in emergencies.

Abstract Wood productivity in plantation forests depends on successful choices of genetic materials and silvicultural practices. Wisely defining the intitial tree spacing according to edaphoclimatic conditions is important as spacing influences the amount of water, nutrients and light available for each tree. Resource availability, in turn, influences some important processes controlling wood production such as tree survival, CO₂ uptake, and partitioning of photosynthates to stem wood and other tree compartments. Different genotypes may respond differently to tree spacing, due to possible differences in their canopy structure, physiology, and strategies for soil ressources acquisitions and carbon allocations. Our objective in this study was to investigate the interactive effects of genotype and tree spacing on wood production of fast-growing clonal eucalypt plantations in Southeastern Brazil. Tree growth, gross primary production (GPP) and partitioning of GPP to total belowground carbon flux (TBCF), wood and leaf production, and aboveground respiration were assessed in an experimental trial involving three commercial E. urophylla clones (AEC 0144, AEC 224 and COP 1404) planted at two spacings (3 m × 2 m; 3 m × 4 m). We hypotetized that (1) the most productive genotypes are those with both the highest GPP and the highest carbon partitioning to stem wood production; and (2) at closer spacing, leaf area index (LAI) and GPP are higher, but the partitioning to wood production is lower, and the belowground partitioning is higher, due to reduced soil water and nutrients availability per tree. Biomass and LAI were measured at ages 40 months (mid-rotation) and 52 months, and GPP, TBCF, wood production and leaf production were estimated between these two stand ages. Stem biomass and LAI were higher, for all clones, at the closer spacing (3 m × 2 m), as we could have expected since this spacing (corresponding to a stocking of 1667 tree ha⁻¹) is the most commonly chosen in industrial eucalypt plantations in this region. Consistently with clonal ranking established in other studies, at spacing 3 m × 2 m clones were ranked as AEC 0144 > AEC 224 > COP 1404 for their wood production, but this ranking almost vanished at wide spacing. Our first hypothesis was supported by data: at spacing 3 m × 2 m the most productive clones (AEC 0144 > AEC 224 > COP 1404) were those with both the highest GPP (6.14 > 4.63 > 4.57 kg C m⁻² year⁻¹) and the highest carbon partitioning to wood production (0.33 > 0.29 > 0.26), although the differences between COP 1404 and AEC 224 were not significant (at P = 0.05). Our second hypothesis was only partially supported by data: wood biomass at age 40 months was higher at the closer spacing, but this positive effect of tight spacing seemed to decrease with stand age, as wood production and GPP measured between ages 40 and 52 months remained higher at the closer spacing only for clone AEC 0144. There was no consistent difference in the partitioning of GPP to wood production between the two spacings. The age-related decrease of the positive effect of high stockings may result from a faster depletion of deep soil water reserves in dense stands.

Abstract The function of uric acid (UA) in the genesis and evolution of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has motivated numerous studies, but the results remain inconclusive. We sought to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies aiming to analyze the association of UA levels with the incidence and progression of CKD. Pubmed/Medline, Lilacs/Bireme and Web of Science were searched to identify eligible studies, following the PRISMA protocol. Data were presented for CKD incidence and progression separately. For the meta-analysis, studies with data stratified by subgroups according to serum UA levels were selected. The inverse variance-weighted random effects model was used to generate a combined effect estimate. Meta-regressions were performed to identify the causes of heterogeneity. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias. The publication bias was tested by funnel plot and Egger's test. Eighteen CKD incidence studies (n = 398,663) and six CKD progression studies (n = 13,575) were included. An inverse relationship was observed between UA levels and protection from CKD incidence and progression. Lower UA levels were protective for the risk of CKD incidence (RR 0.65 [95% CI 0.56-0.75]) and progression (RR 0.55 [95% CI 0.44-0.68]). UA seems to be implicated both in the genesis of CKD and its evolution.

Abstract Hepatitis C is a global public health problem, and the aim of this study was to understand the experiences of patients with hepatitis C using second-generation antivirals. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten outpatients, cognitively capable of reporting their experience, followed up at a university clinic. Field diaries kept during the interviews were also used. The researchers carried out a thematic analysis to identify the ways in which individuals experienced their medication; then, these ways were reorganized to encompass the essential structures of the experience. The patients experienced the use of DAAs as providing resolution and it was permeated by: the experience of time-stagnant time, waiting for medication and the cure; the experience of spaces, understood as necessary and imposed spaces; the experience of relationships with others, personified by the support provided by healthcare professionals; the experience of sexuality, when patients developed several coping strategies to deal with the challenges imposed by the treatment. To conclude, increasing the knowledge about the patients' experiences can contribute to improve the healthcare model for hepatitis C, since several patients have severe hepatic impairment, and the eradication of the virus is only one of the stages of patients' treatments.

Abstract Objective: This study evaluated the effects of intramuscular ozone therapy on nociception, inflammation, and tissue damage caused by the injection of carrageenan in the masseter muscle of rats.
Design: Rat masseter muscles were injected with saline or carrageenan. Seventy-seven adult male rats were divided into six groups: Sal, saline; Car, carrageenan; Ibup + Sal, ibuprofen and saline; Ibup + Car, ibuprofen and carrageenan; O3 + Sal, ozone and saline; and O3 + Car, ozone and carrageenan. The mixture of 5% ozone and 95% oxygen (20 µg/mL) was administered three times in the course of a week. Nociceptive responses in the masseter muscles were measured using a head withdrawal threshold, determined by an electronic von Frey anesthesiometer. The animals were euthanized one or eight days after the carrageenan injection, and the masseters were submitted to histological and histomorphometric analyses.
Results: Mechanical allodynia and inflammation levels were reduced in the Ibup + Car group compared to the other groups. Myonecrosis was similar among carrageenan-treated groups. Picrosirius red stained sections showed more collagen fibers and more regenerating myofibers in the O3 + Car group compared to the other groups. Eight days after carrageenan injection, the O3 + Car group showed neutrophils close to the regenerating myofibers.
Conclusions: Intramuscular ozone therapy did not alleviate mechanical allodynia, and it did not protect the masseter muscle against the deleterious effects produced by carrageenan, probably due to the mode of administration of this therapeutic agent.
