Abstract Intruders in the Mind is an interdisciplinary attempt to bring together high-quality contributions to fundamental debates arising from the study of thought insertion. Making thought insertion its central topic, this compilation gathers a series of essays that offer a broad and thoughtful approach to several aspects of the study of the phenomenon.

Abstract This study addresses the growing recognition of the importance of food and nutrition literacy, while highlighting the limited research in this field, particularly the gap between research and practice. A bibliometric analysis of publications on food and nutrition literacy research from the Scopus database was carried out. Endnote 20, VOSviewer, and Harzing's Publish or Perish were used to analyze the results. The growth of publications, authorship patterns, collaboration, prolific authors, country contributions, preferred journals, and top-cited articles were the bibliometric indicators used. Subsequently, articles aimed at measuring food or nutrition literacy-implemented programs were analyzed. Existing studies have primarily concentrated on defining and measuring food or nutrition literacy. Although interventions targeting food and nutritional literacy have shown promise in promoting healthy eating, further research is required to identify effective approaches in diverse populations and settings. This study emphasizes the need for additional research to measure intervention program efficacy to enhance the policies and practices in this critical area of public health. These findings underscore the importance of understanding food/nutrition literacy and developing effective interventions to promote healthy eating habits. By bridging the research-practice divide, this study provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers to address the gaps and improve food/nutrition literacy in various contexts.

Abstract Pictured, described, and speculated on, for close to 400 years, the function of the rectal gland of elasmobranchs remained unknown. In the late 1950s, Burger discovered that the rectal gland of Squalus acanthias secreted an almost pure solution of sodium chloride, isosmotic with blood, which could be stimulated by volume expansion of the fish. Twenty five years later, Stoff discovered that the secretion of the gland was mediated by adenyl cyclase. Studies since then have shown that vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is the neurotransmitter responsible for activating adenyl cyclase; however, the amount of circulating VIP does not change in response to volume expansion. The humoral factor involved in activating the secretion of the gland is C-type natriuretic peptide, secreted from the heart in response to volume expansion. C-type natriuretic peptide circulates to the gland where it stimulates the release of VIP from nerves within the gland, but it also has a direct effect, independent of VIP. Sodium, potassium, and chloride are required for the gland to secrete, and the secretion of the gland is inhibited by ouabain or furosemide. The current model for the secretion of chloride was developed from this information. Basolateral NaKATPase maintains a low intracellular concentration of sodium, which establishes the large electrochemical gradient for sodium directed into the cell. Sodium moves from the blood into the cell (together with potassium and chloride) down this electrochemical gradient, through a coupled sodium, potassium, and two chloride cotransporter (NKCC1). On activation, chloride moves from the cell into the gland lumen, down its electrical gradient through apical cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator. The fall in intracellular chloride leads to the phosphorylation and activation of NKCC1 that allows more chloride into the cell. Transepithelial sodium secretion into the lumen is driven by an electrical gradient through a paracellular pathway. The aim of this review was to examine the history of the origin of this model for the transport of chloride and suggest that it is applicable to many epithelia that transport chloride, both in resorptive and secretory directions.

Abstract The adequate characterization of pain is critical in diagnosis and therapy selection, and currently is subjectively assessed by patient communication and self-evaluation. Thus, pain recognition and assessment have been a target of study in past years due to the importance of objective measurement. The goal of this work is the analysis of the electrocardiogram (ECG) under emotional contexts and reasoning on the physiological classification of pain under neutral and fear conditions. Using data from both contexts for pain classification, a balanced accuracy of up to 97.4% was obtained. Using an emotionally independent approach and using data from one emotional context to learn pain and data from the other to evaluate the models, a balanced accuracy of up to 97.7% was reached. These similar results seem to support that the physiological response to pain was maintained despite the different emotional contexts. Attempting a participant-independent approach for pain classification and using a leave-one-out cross-validation strategy, data from the fear context were used to train pain classification models, and data from the neutral context were used to evaluate the performance, achieving a balanced accuracy of up to 94.9%. Moreover, across the different learning strategies, Random Forest outperformed the remaining models. These results show the feasibility of identifying pain through physiological characteristics of the ECG response despite the presence of autonomic nervous system perturbations.

Abstract Abstract: A whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) eating pattern has shown benefits in preventing and reversing chronic disease, yet nursing curricula rarely include content on nutrition as a primary modality for disease management. We implemented several undergraduate and graduate nursing and interprofessional teaching strategies to increase student knowledge of a WFPB diet and help nurses improve patient outcomes through assimilation. Students requested additional emphasis on WFPB diets and chronic illness in the curriculum.

Abstract This systematic review (SLR), based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, aims to present a current overview of interventions aimed at promoting the psychosocial well-being and/or empowerment (PWE) of immigrant women in order to guide future projects. Data collection was performed in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases, with studies published between 2012 and 20 March 2023 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were based on the PICO guidelines: (P) immigrant women, (I) interventions to improve PWE, (C) comparison between the initial and final phases, and (O) evaluated results for PWE. Risk of bias was assessed, and most of the studies met more than 80% of the JBI bias criteria and had moderate quality on GRADE. Thirteen studies with 585 participants were included, mostly non-randomized, non-equivalent, and with an experimental-control group design. The main components of interventions were health education/psychoeducation, counseling, cognitive restructuring, and expressive therapies. A descriptive synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data was made to evaluate the results of the interventions in PWE. In the experimental studies, results assessed improvements mainly in mood and depression levels, and stress reduction. Empowerment components were less covered. Experimental groups performed better in almost all variables in the comparison with control groups. The strongest interventions were psychoeducation and cognitive restructuring techniques. The main limitations of the studies were the lack of quality of several studies, sample size and representativeness, language, and the possibility of response bias. Even taking this into account, this article makes an original contribution by advocating for evidence-based practice and offering significant implications for health professionals, policy makers, and researchers that work with the integrative health of immigrant women. This SLR is registered in PROPESRO Registration: CRD42023399683. PS is a research fellow of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) of Portugal.

Title translation Being Depressed or Having Depression. The biomedical model and the difference between mood and illness.
Abstract Along with the increase in reported figures of depression in the world's population, organizations such as the WHO have begun to promote screening and pharmacological treatment of mild symptomatic cases. The problem in this context is that the manifestations of 'normal' and 'pathological' depressive mood do not differ much from each other, which creates difficulties at a diagnostic and scientific level. This article explores an approach that could facilitate the clinical and scientific task of differentiating between non-specific affective disturbances (depressive mood) and depression as an illness as such. It is proposed that various causal stressors interact with individual predispositions to trigger a transient change in mood as an adaptive response. In turn, the greater the intensity of the stressors (psychological, social, etc.), the greater the neuroinflammation, which would diminish neuronal plasticity and the possibilities of mood compensation and behavioral change of the subject. The existence of this neurobiological alteration (decreased neuronal plasticity), rather than depressive mood, would help us to categorize depression as a disease.
