Abstract The current populational aging context requires that society reflect on the variables related with well-being and discuss ways of how to ensure them. The Conservation of Resources Theory (Hobfoll, 1989, 2002) posits that individuals who possess more material or social resources are more capable of resolving conflicts and dealing with stressful situations, thus maintaining good levels of well-being. However, there is a lack of instruments aimed at measuring the necessary resources for retirement well-being. The objective of this study was to translate and analyse the psychometric qualities of the Retirement Resources Inventory (RRI) (Leung & Earl, 2012) as applied to 1002 Brazilian retirees. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were undertaken using two independent subsamples consisting of 401 and 601 retirees respectively. Two viable models arose from the exploratory analysis: A five-factor model, χ2(gl) = 816.644 (271); CFI = 0.88; GFI = 0.98; RMSEA = 0.07; R2 = 0.55; and a six-factor model, χ2(gl) = 1028.291 (400); CFI = 0.88; GFI = 0.98; RMSEA = 0.03; R2= 0.53, with good fit indices, but similar to each other. Confirmatory analysis pointed towards an instrument consisting of 29 items and five factors with good fit indices, χ2(gl) = 1,274(364); CFI = 0.87; TLI: 0.86; RMSEA: 0.06, corroborating the model proposed by Wang and Shultz (2010). The analyses also highlighted the need for actions that take into account the gender, age and region of the country where the retiree lives. Future cross-cultural studies are recommended seeing that retirement planning is an emerging issue that affects the world as a whole.

Abstract Objectives: To compare treatment time, patients' perceptions during orthodontic treatment, dental fear and side effects, between open and closed surgical exposures in patients with palatally displaced canines (PDCs).
Trial design: Multicentre, randomized controlled trial, with random 1:1 allocation of two parallel groups.
Materials and methods: One hundred and twenty patients from three different orthodontic centres were randomized into one of the two intervention arms, open or closed surgical exposure. Both techniques had mucoperiosteal flaps raised and bone removed above the PDCs. In open exposure, tissue was removed above the canine, and glass ionomer - reaching above soft tissue - was built on the crown. The canine was then left to erupt spontaneously, prior to orthodontic alignment. At closed exposure, a chain was bonded to the canine and orthodontic traction was applied under the mucosa until eruption. Orthodontic alignment of the canines was undertaken after eruption into the oral cavity, with fixed appliances in both groups. All participants were treated according to intention to treat (ITT).
Blinding: Due to the nature of this trial, only outcome assessors could be blinded to the intervention group.
Results: One hundred and seventeen patients completed the trial. All PDCs were successfully aligned. Total treatment time was equal in the two techniques, mean difference -0.1 months (95% CI -3.2 to 2.9, P = 0.93). The closed group experienced more pain and discomfort during the active orthodontic traction. Dental fear, root resorption and periodontal status did not show any clinically significant differences between the groups.
Generalizability: Results of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) can be generalized only to a similar population aged 9-16 years, if exclusion criteria are met.
Conclusion: The closed exposure group experienced more pain and discomfort mostly during active orthodontic traction. All other studied outcomes were similar between the two exposure groups.

Abstract This study compared differences in degree of happiness, social support, activities performed, and health and economic situation among retirees from urban and rural areas in Minas Gerais State in Brazil. The influences of these predictors over individuals' level of happiness were also analyzed. We included 279 retired individuals living in Abre Campo (a municipality with a population fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, which is considered a rural area) and in Belo Horizonte (a municipality with a population of almost 2.5 million inhabitants, which is considered an urban area). Participants responded to a questionnaire that included scales of happiness, social support, diversity of activities, and issues about satisfaction with health and economic situation. Retirees from the urban area had a higher happiness level than retirees from the rural area (β = 0.16). The most important predictors of happiness were health (β = 0.42), social support (β = 0.26), and economic situation (β = 0.15), but no moderation effects of urban and rural areas were found. Our findings support the implementation of actions to offer financial planning before retirement and to stimulate social support and health promotion for retirees, particularly given the importance of these factors in perception of happiness.

Abstract Objectives: The early interceptive treatment of palatally displaced canines (PDCs) has for decades been based on their position in panoramic radiographs. In the 1990s, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) started to become popular in cases with PDCs. The aims of this prospective study were to evaluate the agreement of PDC sector position and angle to midline between panoramic radiographs and CBCT scans.
Methods: PDC sector and angle to midline were measured in panoramic radiographs and CBCT scans in 58 consecutive patients with 64 PDCs. Kappa with linear weighting was used to assess the agreement between the measurements of PDC sector position and Bland-Altman limits of agreement to assess the agreement between the PDC angular measurements in the 2 methods.
Results: PDC sector position and angle to midline had systematically higher values in panoramic radiographs compared with those in the CBCT scans. The agreement of sector position between the methods was fair: weighted kappa 0.36 (95% CI 0.24-0.49). The mean difference in angle was almost 7° (95% CI 5.9°-7.9°) higher in panoramic radiographs compared with CBCT.
Conclusions: Panoramic radiographs overestimate PDC sector and angle to midline position, compared with the use of CBCT scans, but clinically the differences are quite modest. Panoramic radiographs could be considered good enough for rendering PDC position when the need for 3D information is not crucial for treatment planning.

Abstract A new, fast, automated and inexpensive sample pre-treatment method for 99Tc determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection is presented. The miniaturized approach is based on a lab-on-valve (LOV) system, allowing automatic separation and preconcentration of 99Tc. Selectivity is provided by the solid phase extraction system used (TEVA resin) which retains selectively pertechnetate ion in diluted nitric acid solution. The proposed system has some advantages such as minimization of sample handling, reduction of reagents volume, improvement of intermediate precision and sample throughput, offering a significant decrease of both time and cost per analysis in comparison to other flow techniques and batch methods. The proposed LOV system has been successfully applied to different samples of environmental interest (water and soil) with satisfactory recoveries, between 94% and 98%. The detection limit (LOD) of the developed method is 0.005ng. The high durability of the resin and its low amount (32mg), its good intermediate precision (RSD 3.8%) and repeatability (RSD 2%) and its high extraction frequency (up to 5h−1) makes this method an inexpensive, high precision and fast tool for monitoring 99Tc in environmental samples.

Abstract Background and objectives: Thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) has been associated with a significantly increased risk of miscarriage in women with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TAI in women with RPL and compare the clinical characteristics of positive and negative TAI women. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study; 203 women with RPL were included. Thyroid profile, anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO-Ab), and anti-thyroglobulin (TG-Ab) antibodies were measured in all participants. Clinical characteristics and causes of RPL were compared between positive and negative TAI. Results: Prevalence of TAI was 14.8%; prevalence of positive TPO-Ab and TG-Ab was 12.3% and 4.9%, respectively. Women with TAI had significantly higher concentrations of thyrotropin (TSH) compared to women without TAI (4.8 ± 3.8 versus 3.1 ± 1.1, p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in age, the number of gestations, miscarriages, state of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), or causes of RPL between women that were TAI-positive versus TAI-negative. Prevalence of positive TAI by cause of RPL was: endocrine 7/25 (28%), genetic 1/5 (20%), autoimmune 1/5 (20%), anatomic 8/55 (14.5%), and unexplained cause 13/112 (11.6%). Conclusions: The prevalence of TAI in women with RPL is 14.8%. Women with an endocrine cause have the highest prevalence of TAI.

As a part of the Argentine continuously operating reference station network, a GPS (Global Positioning System) station named UNSJ (Universidad Nacional de San Juan) was established in San Juan city on 6th March 2007. The recorded data of UNSJ are widely applied to cadastral surveys and serve as the basis for defining national and regional geodetic reference frames. As a key component of the geodetic infrastructure, an efficient quality control of raw data and stability monitoring of a GPS reference station is highly convenient. In this study, results of quality control of the UNSJ observations after two year of operation are reported. In order to check and characterize the receiver performance and the station environment, four indices were chosen. They are the number of observations, multipath on L1, multipath on L2 and cycle slips occurrence. Also, the long term stability of UNSJ station was evaluated through the analysis of weekly coordinate time series provided by the SIRGAS (Geocentric Reference System for the Americas) calculus centers. The analysis of the coordinates derived from different online processing services completes this study. The results indicate that during the analyzed period, the functioning of the station UNSJ was satisfactory, producing qualit indexes that are acceptable to international standards.
