Abstract Background: Anemia is a global maternal health problem that commonly occurs in developing countries. During pregnancy, a woman will receive antenatal services to check her condition and prevent complications. This study aimed to explore barriers towards achieving eradication of iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women in Aceh Besar District, Indonesia.
Methods: This qualitative study was conducted on 18 health workers who were recruited through a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using open-ended questions to gain insight about participants' experiences in managing iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women. Data analysis was conducted by an inductive content analysis method to evaluate, encode, and analyze the interview's result.
Result: Three main themes emerged: (1) facilities, infrastructures, and supplement support; (2) sociocultural factors; and (3) health provider competency deficits and no developing guidelines.
Conclusion: Our findings provide understanding that there are many obstacles and barriers encountered by health workers in iron deficiency anemia prevention management. Thus, the management of anemia must be supported by a skilled health worker and quality facilities. Health workers and pregnant women must work together to achieve optimal management of anemia prevention.

Abstract Our body needs an adequate supply of antioxidants to maintain physiological functions. Antioxidant compounds are found in natural plants, including inside of kepok bananas peel. This research was conducted to determine the potential of kepok banana peels to maintain testosterone concentration in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) with a high-fat diet. This study used 20 male rats 2.5-3 months old, which grouped into 5 groups: normal group given standard feed (K1), negative control group given high-fat diet (K2), positive control group given high-fat diet and simvastatin (K3), high-fat diet group and banana peel extract administered at 100 mg/kg BW (K4), and high-fat diet group and banana peel extract administered at 200 mg/ kg BW (K5). The blood serum was collected after 60 days of the treatment. The blood serum testosterone levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method at a wavelength of 450 nm. The major findings of this study were that there is a significant difference between testosterone concentrations by the K4 group compared to K2 and K5 groups (p<0,05). The result suggests that the dose 100 mg/kg BW of banana peel extract has the potential to maintain the testosterone concentration in male rats with a high-fat diet.

Abstract This study aimed to compare estrous performance and progesterone concentration during the estrous cycle of kacang goats induced by PGF2α versus ovsynch protocol. This research used six female kacang goats. The goats were divided into two groups namely the K1 group which was induced by injecting 7.5 mg PGF2α intramuscularly in 10 days interval and K2 group which was induced by using the ovsynch method. Protocol for K2 group was as follow; at day 1, the goats were injected with 7.5 mg PGF2α; at day 8, they were injected with 50 µg GnRH; at day 15 they were injected with 7.5 mg PGF2α; at day 18 they were injected with 50 µg GnRH. Estrous were detected using male goat and visual observation. The blood samples were taken on days 7, 14, and 21 after estrous. Progesterone concentration was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. Intensity, onset, and duration of estrous in K1 group versus K2 group were 8.33±2.08 vs 7.00±1.00; 56.00±34.12 vs 36.00±20.78 hours; and 24.00±26.15 vs 24.00±20.78 hours, respectively (p>0.05). Level of progesterone hormone on day 7, 14, and 21 for K1 vs K2 were 0.812±0.710 vs 2.369±3.351; 5.051±7.754 vs 3.091±4.385 ng/ml; and 4.173±6.692 vs 3.562±4.113 ng/mL, respectively (p>0,05). It can be concluded that the differences in synchronization protocols between PGF2α versus ovsynch do not affect the performance of estrous and the concentration of progesterone during the estrous cycle of kacang goats.

Abstract Endometritis is an inflammation of the uterine wall that may decrease fertility in the short term and may lead to sterility in the long term. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of lugol for endometritis therapy in aceh cow. This study used three aceh cows that had been diagnosed endometritis by ultrasonography. The three aceh cows were then treated with 20 ml of 2% lugol intra-uterine. Observation of the uterine healing process was performed by using transrectal ultrasonography for 24 days after treated with lugol. Parameters observed were uterine diameter, the thickness of the endometrium and the presence of mucus and discharge in the uterus. The result showed that the three cows did not show a significant change. A cream-yellowish discharge came out from the uterus continuously, the diameter of uterine was still large and the sonograph of endometrial displayed as a hyperechoic until the 24th day after therapy. In conclusion, the use of 2% Lugol as a therapy for endometritis in aceh cows during 24 days is not effective on the uterine healing of endometritis’s cows.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between spermatozoa morphometry and testosterone concentration in the epididymal caput, corpus, and cauda of aceh cattle. The epididymal sperm swab slides were stained using Williams's staining to examined the morphology and morphometry of spermatozoa whereas the level of testosterone from epididymal caput, corpus, and cauda extract was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The data of sperm morphology were presented descriptively whereas the data of sperm morphometry and testosterone concentration were analyzed using one way ANOVA. Pearson correlation test was conducted to know the correlation between the total length of spermatozoa (TLS) and testosterone concentration in three parts of epididymis. The result showed that the sperm morphology in caput, corpus, and cauda of epididymis was not different statistically. The TLS of aceh cattle at caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis were 69,70±0,8 µm, 70,90±0.39 µm, and 72,98±0.74 µm respectively and statistically different (p<0.05). In addition, the concentration of testosterone in caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis were 9,92±3,76 ng/g, 16.96±13,22 ng/g, and 15,63±11.80 ng/g respectively and also not different among three parts of epididymis (p>0.05). The positive correlation (r= 0.413, p= 0.416) was found between TLS and testosterone concentration at caput whereas in corpus and cauda those correlation were negative and not different (corpus: r= -0.638, p= 0.172 and cauda: r= -0.719, p= 0,108). In conclusion, the longest-sized spermatozoa found in the cauda epididymis are mature spermatozoa where the maturation process optimally takes place in caput epididymis. Testosterone found in the epididymis of aceh cow can be used as an alternative source of testosterone.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the period of estrus cycle in aceh cattle, Indonesia, based on vaginal cytology techniques. Four healthy females of aceh cattle with average weight of 250-300 kg, age of 5-7 years, and body condition score of 3-4 were used. All cattle were subjected to ultrasonography analysis for the occurrence of corpus luteum before being synchronized using intramuscular injections of PGF2 alpha 25 mg. A vaginal swab was collected from aceh cattle, stained with Giemsa 10%, and observed microscopically. Period of estrus cycle was predicted from day 1 to day 24 after estrus synchronization was confirmed using ultrasonography analysis at the same day. The result showed that parabasal, intermediary, and superficial epithelium were found in the vaginal swabs collected from proestrus, metestrus, and diestrus aceh cattle. Proportions of these cells in the particular period of estrus cycle were 36.22, 32.62, and 31.16 (proestrus); 21.33, 32.58, and 46.09 (estrus); 40.75, 37.58, and 21.67 (metestrus); and 41.07, 37.38, and 21.67 (diestrus), respectively. In conclusion, dominant proportion of superficial cell that occurred in estrus period might be used as the base for determining optimal time for insemination.
