Abstract Objective: This study examined the changes in the relative proportions of male and female drivers between 1963 and 2010.
Method: The analysis used data from the Federal Highway Administration.
Results: During the period examined, the proportion of male drivers has gradually decreased. In 1963, males represented 60.4 percent of all drivers. Males became a minority in 2005. In 2010, they constituted 49.7 percent. A consideration of both the percentage of drivers by gender and the average annual miles driven by gender revealed that in 1963 about 76 percent of drivers on the road were males, which dropped to about 59 percent by 2010.
Conclusions: Currently, females with a driver's license are slightly outnumbering males. However, because females drive less than males, the overall likelihood that a given driver on the road today is a female is still less than 50 percent.

Abstract Background: In the United States, traffic fatality rates per distance driven vary greatly from state to state, with the maximum rate being 2.9 times the minimum rate. This study was designed to examine factors associated with this variability.
Method: A multiple regression was performed on the 2006 state data. The dependent variable was the fatality rate per distance driven. There were 10 independent variables.
Results: The analysis identified seven statistically significant factors: homicide rate per capita (used in the analysis as a proxy for aggression), physicians per capita, safety-belt usage rate, proportion of male drivers, proportion of drivers over 64 years of age, income per capita, and deaths caused by alcohol-related liver failures per capita (a proxy for the extent of intoxicated driving). These seven factors accounted for 71 percent of the variance in the traffic fatality rates. The strongest predictor of the traffic fatality rate was the homicide rate.
Conclusion: This finding suggests that social aspects of human interaction may play an important role in traffic safety.

Abstract Objectives: This study examined the variation in the U.S. road fatality rate per distance driven across the months of the year.
Method: The monthly fatality rates were analyzed for a 13-year period from 1994 through 2006.
Results: The results indicate a systematic seasonal variation in the road fatality rate, with the highest rate in October and the lowest rate in March.
Conclusion: The obtained seasonal variation in the road fatality rate is likely a result of a joint influence of several factors that exhibit seasonal variations themselves (the duration of darkness, consumption of alcohol, proportion of older drivers, amount of leisure driving, and inclement weather).
