Abstract The default use of masculine morphology to refer to all genders in Arabic-speaking countries is largely unquestioned and widely accepted. However, research on masculine generic morphology in other gender-marked languages has shown that this can create an over-representation of men and a male-bias in perception. Given the extensive use of default masculine grammatical gender in the context of job recruitment, education, and formal communication where women are typically underrepresented and men overrepresented, this widely accepted notion needs to be investigated. The primary aim of this research is to understand how grammatical gender in Arabic mediates occupational expectations based on the language currently used in job recruitment in Arabic speaking countries. Specifically, the study explores how the use of default masculine grammatical gender can create a male-bias in perception. The secondary aim of this research is to test whether gender-inclusive language can reduce this male-bias in perception and instead increase the accessibility, activation, and retrieval of exemplars related to other gender minorities (i.e., reduce male-bias in perception). This is achieved through a novel prompted speech production experiment, based on an adaptation of the popular board game 'Taboo' where participants are asked to describe role nouns presented (e.g., doctor or nurse) in different language conditions.

Abstract Background: There are more octogenarians presenting with gallstone disease each year. Many are not suitable for surgical intervention. An alternative treatment option for common bile duct stones in the elderly is endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with or without stent insertion.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using a prospectively collected database, analysing the outcomes of consecutive patients >80 years old who underwent an ERCP in a single centre for the treatment of common bile duct stones.
Results: In total, 156 patients, with a median age of 91 years, underwent an ERCP for choledocholithiasis over a 3-year period. ERCP was successful in 90% of patients but a proportion required repeat intervention. Forty-six (29%) patients had a concurrently inserted stent due to incomplete stone extraction. Six (4%) patients required a post-ERCP cholecystectomy due to ongoing symptoms. The overall ERCP complication rate was 7% (4% Clavien-Dindo 1 and 3% Clavien-Dindo 2), with no cases of post-ERCP pancreatitis or death. Patients were followed up over 5 years following index ERCP. There was a 60% 3-year survival and 30% 5-year survival rate following index ERCP. Importantly, of those who did not survive, only four patients (2.6%) had a death attributable to a biliary cause and none were fit for definitive surgery.
Conclusions: ERCP can be considered as a possible definitive management option for treating common bile duct stones in the elderly, particularly in the comorbid population. Concurrent stenting is an effective temporizing strategy and mitigator of biliary-related readmission, but routine stent changes should be considered. Key messages What is already known on this topic Current guidelines advocate for laparoscopic cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration in patients with choledocholithiasis. What this study adds Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with or without stent insertion is a safe, alternative single-treatment modality for choledocholithiasis in the elderly comorbid population. How this study might affect research, practice, or policy Studies and guidelines evaluating treatment options for choledocholithiasis may be altered to accommodate patient-specific factors, including age and comorbid status, and the concurrent use of stenting as a either a temporizing or longer-term measure for complex stone disease.

Abstract Humanitarian emergencies pose a significant global health challenge for children and young people's mental and psychological health. This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programmes delivered to children and young people affected by humanitarian emergencies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Twelve electronic databases, key websites and citation checking were undertaken. Forty-three randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in English between January 1980 and May 2023 were included in the review. Overall, the findings suggest that cognitive behavioural therapy may improve depression symptoms in children and young people affected by humanitarian emergencies. Narrative exposure therapy may reduce feelings of guilt. However, the impact of the other MHPSS modalities across outcomes is inconsistent. In some contexts, providing psychosocial programmes involving creative activities may increase the symptoms of depression in children and young people. These findings emphasise the need for the development of MHPSS programmes that can safely and effectively address the diverse needs of children and young people living in adversarial environments.

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate the association of two parts of melanocortin gene (MC4R-1, MC4R-2) and feed intake for V-line rabbits. V-line rabbits were grouped into high and low daily feed intake during the period from 30 to 63 days of age in order to identify MC4R SNPs useful for association study with feed intake. DNA from blood samples of each group was extracted to amplify the MC4R gene. The purified PCR products were sequenced in those had the highest and lowest feed intake. Alignment of sequence data from each group revealed that there is a variation detected in MC4R-1 at nucleotide 35 (T-G) (sense mutation) and another variation was detected in MC4R-2 gene at nucleotide 19 (T-C) (sense mutation) for high feed intake rabbits. These sense mutations lead to transform some amino acids and cause a significant change of the MC4R function. The results of average daily feed intake (ADFI) indicated that group (1) had significantly higher feed intake than group (2) of V-line rabbits. The detected mutations and the analysis of daily feed intake means revealed a significant association between MC4R polymorphism and feed intake in rabbits.

Abstract The present study aimed to examine the impacts of supplementing hot red pepper oil (HRPO) to broiler diets. One hundred and twenty Arbor Acres chicks were divided randomly into four experimental groups as three supplementation levels of HRPO (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/kg diet) and the control group.
