Abstract For centuries, the great empires of West Africa were fed by rivers like the Volta or the Niger - their blue veins. Today, after decades of colonisation, the food resilience of the banks of these rivers is at risk, and endogenous culture is being lost to an increasingly urban and violently industrialised transitional society. Nigeria tells us how far this boat can sink, but its on the banks of the Niger, in Mali, that a first answer comes to us from a former footballer who swapped football pitches for other fields. Farmers poisoned by pesticides are a constant in Burkina Faso, triggering the search for alternatives are sought by partnerships between scientists and farmers. Members of the Rastafari community feel the call to care for the health of the land and people. "This is the moment of the African Renaissance" argues Godfrey Namudjo, founder of Songhai, a worldwide recognized agroecological training centre in Benin. A stream of awareness, ideas and initiatives flows and grows across West Africa like a powerful green vein fertilising the land.

Abstract This work presents an inductive wireless power transfer system for powering an endoscopy capsule supplying energy to power electronic devices allocated inside a capsule of ≈26.1 mm × 9 mm. A receiver with three coils in quadrature with dimensions of ≈9 mm × 9 mm × 10 mm is located inside the capsule, moving freely inside a transmitter coil with 380 mm diameter through translations and revolutions. The proposed system tracks the variations of the equivalent magnetic coupling coefficient compensating misalignments between the transmitter and receiver coils. The power on the load is estimated and optimized from the transmitter, and the tracking control is performed by actuating on a capacitance in the matching network and on the voltage source frequency. The proposed system can prevent load overheating by limiting the power via adjusting of the magnitude of voltage source VS. Experimental results with uncertainties analysis reveal that, even at low magnetic coupling coefficients

Title translation Increase in the poverty and inequity in the funding of the Ecuadorian health system.
Abstract Objective: The objective of this study is to measure the increase in poverty due to direct health expenditures and to analyze the equity of financing of the Ecuadorian health system, based on data from representative national surveys of the country.
Method: It was carried out with data from the 2013-2014 Living Conditions Survey and used poverty lines, with relative and absolute approaches to measure the increase in poverty and, through Analysis of Incidence in Financing, inequalities in the financing distribution.
Results: Poverty increased 2.2% due to families spending on health, especially on expenses for medications and medical consultations, which represented 36.7% and 14.6% of total expenditure on direct payments. Furthermore, the most important sources of financing turned out to be regressive, mainly affecting the middle class. When they were consolidated, the sources of financing analyzed turned out to be proportional that, although it is not the worst-case scenario, it is not the expected one for a health system that must guarantee financial protection to its users.
Discussion: Although there are financing goals that are difficult to achieve, at least the country's laws establish the pursuit of this goal. However, losses of financial resources make it difficult to achieve the objectives set.

Abstract This paper presents a detailed evaluation of the efficiency of software-only techniques to mitigate SEU and SET in microprocessors. A set of well-known rules is presented and implemented automatically to transform an unprotected program into a hardened one. SEU and SET are injected in all sensitive areas of a MIPS-based microprocessor architecture. The efficiency of each rule and a combination of them are tested. Experimental results show the inefficiency of the control-flow techniques in detecting the majority of SEU and SET faults. Three effects of the non-detected faults are explained. The conclusions can lead designers in developing more efficient techniques to detect these types of faults.

Abstract In West Africa, many smallholder poultry and fish farmers do not have access to feed protein sources, resulting in quantitative and qualitative feed shortages that affects the production of meat, eggs and fish. A solution to develop sustainable household poultry farming and aquaculture systems is the use of insects, which are rich in protein as well as other valuable nutrient. As animal feed, the insects can be mass produced locally and on-farm. The IFWA project has shown that fly larvae and termites are economically, socially and environmentally viable sources of protein for poultry and fish feed on smallholder farms in West Africa. Adding fly larvae and termites in the diet significantly enhances local chicken growth performances and egg production. The use of insects as feed provides new opportunities for income generation among local populations and will potentially have an effect on local food security.

Abstract The application of organic resources in agricultural land enhances soil fertility and quality, with positive social, economic and environmental impacts. However, the respective techniques have failed to be implemented in farmers’ cropping systems on a large scale. The ORM4Soil project identifies the agronomic, socio-economic, cultural, and communicative reasons that promote the adoption of tested agricultural technologies. The project aims at identifying practicable solutions that help farmers to build soil fertility. Innovations developed jointly by farmers and researchers, such as locally adapted forms of agroforestry, green manure and compost, are tested and evaluated for their potential to be adopted by more farmers. The ORM4Soil project’s methodology follows an inter- and trans-disciplinary approach with farmers, scientists and students working together in the fields of agronomy, sociology and communication.
