Abstract In the Bavaria of 1775, the popular exorcist practices performed by the catholic priest Johann Joseph Gassner were discredited and superseded by the enlightened, ‘scientific’ system of Franz Anton Mesmers “Animal Magnetism”. As the article argues, this replacement could happen so easily because–below the apparent ideological differences–both procedures were based on the same idea of technical functioning, they relied on the same principle of operation. Gassnerism as well as Mesmerism revolved around the idea of communication, and in both cases this ‘communication’ was not about conveying a message, a meaning, it was a about mediating between two corporeal states which were marked by an imbalance of energy. In the frame of this common operating system, the message was nothing, transmission everything; and so both Gassner’s and Mesmer’s deliberations concentrated on the technical means and media which could allow for such a transport of forces. A hypothesis drawn from this episode is that throughout the early modern period there can be found basically two ways of understanding supernatural communication (and, maybe, communication tout court): One might be called ‘contact paradigm’ and would among others include the practices of Gassner and Mesmer, the second one could be named ‘code paradigm’ and would unite all magical practices primarily based on the interpretation of signs. Perhaps one can find here an origin of the theoretical bifurcations that still govern todays media and communication studies: medium vs. message, channel vs. content, hardware vs. software, presence culture vs. meaning culture.

Abstract As the Ebola outbreak continued to rage in West Africa, Western countries began to be directly affected by the disease. On the last day of September 2014, the first active Ebola case was diagnosed in the United States. Officials in Dallas, Texas, scrambled to contain the virus. A few weeks later, tension rose dramatically when two of the nurses who treated the initial US patient developed Ebola. One of the nurses traveled to Ohio and back before becoming sick. She flew by plane and had contact with other travelers. Officials were very worried that Ebola flare-ups would start to occur across the country. On October 6, 2014, a nursing assistant in Spain was diagnosed with Ebola. Like the US nurses, she had helped treat a repatriated Ebola victim. On October 23, 2014, a new US case was identified. A doctor was diagnosed with Ebola in New York City after returning from Guinea. On the same day, an Ebola case was discovered in the West African country of Mali. The Ebola outbreak seemed out of control and poised to start a major international epidemic. In West Africa, however, a corner had been turned. Healthcare efforts had shifted from treating all Ebola patients in medical facilities to providing families with supplies to take care of sick patients at home. Toward the end of October 2014, reports started to surface about there being fewer cases in West Africa, especially in Liberia. These reports were initially treated with caution. As time progressed, however, it became clear that the drop in cases was real.

Abstract Converting Sigmund Freud’s model of meta-psychology into a tool for the analysis of archives the article proposes to distinguish three different meta-archivological aspects: under a dynamic aspect archival phenomena can be described as a result of conflicts and combinations of forces; topologically speaking, one can locate the archival functions in distinct sites of the storage system; finally, the description has to allow for the economic problem of the archive, that is its precarious balance between constitution and dissolution, conservation and loss, secretion and publication, scar- city and redundancy, evidence and obscurity, sense and nonsense, history and dust. As is shown in my analysis of the late 18th century secret society of the Illuminati, these basic functions can not only explain how archival power is constituted and exercised but also how the will for a centralized and controlled knowledge meets the fate of epistemological and political disorder. Finally, the story of the Illuminati is apt to demonstrate how – in a very literal sense – the order and the continuous re-ordering of the archive accounts for the constitution of an historical object and its various appearances.

Abstract Aim: The aim of the present study was to create a tool to evaluate the risk of peri-implantitis according its severity.
Methods: After ethics committee approval, 43 patients provided signed consent and were included prospectively. Forty-five observations were recorded. The following criteria were recorded: number of implant faces showing bleeding and/or suppuration, pocket depth on at least two faces of the implant, bone loss as a function of the length of the implant evaluated on X-rays, number of implant faces with bacterial plaque, the parameters required for determination of excess cement (screwed or sealed prosthesis, burying of sealed prostheses), periodontal status, glycemia, and annual consumption of tobacco. Each of these parameters was plotted on a chart using Microsoft Excel.
Results: Seventeen of 45 (37.8%) cases were identified as having high peri-implantitis risk, two of 45 (4.4%) had low risk, and 11 of 45 (24.4%) had moderate risk; 33.3% patients did not have peri-implantitis and were considered at very low risk.
Conclusion: The observed results applied to the evaluation model are an effective diagnostic tool in assessing the risk of peri-implantitis. The tool takes into account parameters, which have not been taken into account until now. The information is automatically processed and allows early management of peri-implantitis.

Abstract Methanogens have already been described in periodontitis but not in peri-implantitis. Thirty peri-implantitis samples and 28 control samples were collected in 28 consenting peri-implantitis patients. PCR-sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used as a broad-spectrum screening method and results were further confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR targeting the mcrA genes. Results showed a methanogen community dominated by Methanobrevibacter oralis in 31/58 (51%) samples including 16/28 (57%) control samples and 15/30 (50%) peri-implantitis samples. Methanobrevibacter massiliense was detected in 5/58 (8.6%) samples including 3/28 (1%) control samples and 2/30 (6.7%) peri-implantitis samples. The prevalence of M. oralis or M. massiliense did not significantly differ in peri-implantitis and control samples (exact Fisher test, P = 0.61 and P = 0.67, respectively). Further ponderation of the methanogen load by the real-time quantitative PCR for actin human gene again indicated non-significant difference (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, P = 0.48 and P = 0.40, respectively). These data show that the prevalence of methanogens does not differ in peri-implantitis lesions and healthy sites, when individuals are their own control. These data do not allow assigning a specific pathogenic role to methanogens in peri-implantitis; methanogens rather are part of the commensal and normal flora of the oral cavity.

Abstract While immediate loading in the edentulous mandible is a well-documented procedure, there are limited scientific data on immediate loading in the partially edentulous mandible. Two-year success rates of immediate loading and conventional delayed loading of dental implants in partially dentate mandibles were compared. Patients were randomized into three groups: group A (n = 40), immediate provisionalization with nonocclusal loading; group B (n = 40), immediate provisionalization with occlusal loading; and group C (n = 37), delayed loading with single-stage surgery. Baseline and 2-year measurements included implant stability quotient, insertion torque, and peri-implant bone crest radiography. Two hundred nine implants were immediately loaded in 80 patients. The 2-year success rates were 93.3% for group B and 100% for groups A and C. Immediate provisionalization provided success rates similar to those for delayed loading only when not loaded in occlusion.

Abstract Statement of problem: Treatment options for an increasing number of completely edentulous patients using fixed restorations may be limited due to anatomical or financial constraints.
Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to compare immediate loading versus conventional delayed loading of implants placed for the retention of mandibular overdentures.
Material and methods: Twenty-six subjects each received 3 implants placed in the symphysis area which were connected with a gold bar. In the experimental group (n=17), the 3 splinted implants were loaded 2 days after surgery; in the control group (n=9), the 3 implants were loaded 3 months after surgery using a conventional 2-stage approach. Recall appointments were scheduled every 3 months during the 2-year follow-up. The following clinical parameters were included and assessed: health of periimplant soft tissues using the bleeding index (BI), plaque index (PI), periimplant probing depth (PIPD), periimplant bone resorption as measured on panoramic radiographs, and implant stability using resonance frequency analysis (RFA). The Mann-Whitney test (alpha=.05) was used to compare each parameter in the 2 groups.
Results: After 2 years, no implant failure was recorded in either group. No significant difference was found between the 2 groups after 2 years with regard to BI (P=.33), PI (P=.81), PIPD (P=.61), periimplant bone resorption (P=.32), or RFA (P=.06). After 1 year, periimplant bone loss (P=.05) and PIPD (P=.005) were increased in the control group.
Conclusions: Immediate loading of 3 splinted implants retaining a mandibular overdenture shortens treatment time for prosthesis insertion and shows, after 2 years, results comparable with the delayed approach.
