Abstract Introduction: Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is a rare benign condition usually found on marginal and attached gingiva. This case details a generalized PCG, to include the management of the patient and clinicopathologic characteristics of the disorder.
Case presentation: The patient, a 24-year-old African American female, was referred to the periodontics clinic for severe generalized gingival erythema and edema. Past medical history review was remarkable for sickle cell anemia and systemic lupus erythematosus. The patient was initially prescribed dexamethasone oral rinse (0.5 mg/5 ml) pending biopsy and medical consult for potential causes of any hypersensitivity reaction. The patient also was instructed to discontinue her current type of oral mouthrinse and dentifrice. Biopsy results confirmed a diagnosis of PCG. Resolution of signs and symptoms started 1 month later, and approximately 2 years after initial diagnosis the patient was clinically stable.
Conclusion: This report describes the management of a diffuse plasma cell gingivitis and reviews pertinent literature on the lesion. The etiology of PCG, although unclear, may be attributable to a hypersensitivity reaction. PCG may mimic other pathological entities, which underscores the importance of microscopic examination in establishing a definitive diagnosis before treatment initiation.

Abstract Methionine is an essential amino acid in mammals and a precursor for vital metabolites required for the survival of all organisms. Consequently, its inclusion is required in diverse applications, such as food, feed, and pharmaceuticals. Although amino acids and other metabolites are commonly produced through microbial fermentation, high-yield biosynthesis of L-methionine remains a significant challenge due to the strict cellular regulation of the biosynthesis pathway. As a result, methionine is produced primarily synthetically, resulting in a racemic mixture of D,L-methionine. This study explores methionine bio-production in E. coli by replacing its native trans-sulfurylation pathway with the more common direct-sulfurylation pathway used by other bacteria. To this end, we generated a methionine auxotroph E. coli strain (MG1655) by simultaneously deleting metA and metB genes and complementing them with metX and metY from different bacteria. Complementation of the genetically modified E. coli with metX/metY from Cyclobacterium marinum or Deinococcus geothermalis, together with the deletion of the global repressor metJ and overexpression of the transporter yjeH, resulted in a substantial increase of up to 126 and 160-fold methionine relative to the wild-type strain, respectively, and accumulation of up to 700 mg/L using minimal MOPS medium and 2 ml culture. Our findings provide a method to study methionine biosynthesis and a chassis for enhancing L-methionine production by fermentation.

Abstract This study examined the roles of stigma and of enabling factors in help-seeking by parental caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities and dual diagnosis. Questionnaires were completed by 195 family caregivers. Lower family stigma was related to higher personal enabling factors (e.g. knowledge about services and previous experience in seeking help), which in turn was related to higher help-seeking behaviors. Higher professional enabling factors (e.g. attitude of the professional, services in the vicinity) were related to higher intentions to seek help, which were related to higher help-seeking behaviors. Professionals can help families achieve a greater sense of self-efficacy in their own help-seeking process by providing them with knowledge about services and facilitating a more positive experience in the process.

Abstract Accurate diagnosis of chronic pain disorders of the mouth, jaws, and face is frequently complex. It is common for patients with chronic orofacial pain to consult multiple clinicians and receive ineffective treatment before a correct diagnosis is reached. This problem is a significant public health concern. Clinicians can minimize error by starting the diagnostic procedure with a careful, accurate history and thorough head and neck examination followed by a thoughtfully constructed differential diagnosis. The possibility that the patient has symptoms of a life-threatening underlying disease rather than a more common dental, sinus, or temporomandibular disorder must always be considered.

Abstract In an effort to extend the usefulness of microwave cavity detectors to higher axion masses, above ∼8 μeV (∼2 GHz), a numerical trade study of cavities was conducted to investigate the merit of using variable periodic post arrays and regulating vane designs for higher-frequency searches. The results show that both designs could be used to develop resonant cavities for high-mass axion searches. Multiple configurations of both methods obtained the scanning sensitivity equivalent to approximately 4 coherently coupled cavities with a single tuning rod.

Abstract Muscle disorders involving the masticatory muscles have been considered analogous to skeletal muscle disorders throughout the body. However, emerging research has shed new light on the varied etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of myofascial pain and masticatory muscle disorders. This article reviews the etiology and classification of regional masticatory muscle disorders, the clinical examination of the patient, and evidence-based treatment recommendations.
