Abstract This data article provides two dataset types for total pressure drop and parallel-flow distribution in a Z-type flat-plate solar thermal absorber with water as the working fluid. The first dataset consists of high-resolution pressure drop measurements at different temperatures under laminar and turbulent flow conditions obtained experimentally using a state-of-the-art hydraulic test rig. The second dataset comprises analytical data on flow distribution in the absorber. Conducting high-resolution pressure measurements, essential for evaluating thermo-hydraulic models, is a sensitive and time-demanding process requiring a relatively elaborated test rig to accurately measure pressure drop at different temperatures and flow rates in the presence of thermal equilibrium. In this context, engineers and researchers can use these datasets to compare and verify developed numerical models for thermo-hydraulic evaluation of pressure drop and flow distribution in flat-plate solar collectors under both laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The article also comprises analytical data for flow distribution in the absorber for several header configurations presented by dimensionless-flow-rate and non-uniformity. This data article is related to the research article (Shantia et al., 2022 ). The datasets are accessible in the supplementary files accompanied by the online version of this article and in the Mendeley Data repository.

Abstract This study inspects the effect of tapered headers on pressure drop and flow distribution in a U-type polymeric absorber with novel tapered headers and lens-shaped absorber strings using a validated thermo-hydraulic model. The model results are compared with those obtained from the literature to attain credibility in the flow distribution trend for the U-configuration. A good agreement between the developed discrete model and comparison cases is found. Moreover, in order to examine the efficacy of tapered headers in more detail, different scenarios are treated in terms of header configuration by applying cylindrical geometry in one or both inlet/outlet headers. The outcomes exemplify that even a slight cone angle of 1.73° in headers can significantly reduce non-uniformity (φₘₐₓ< 8%) with negligible influence on the total pressured drop. Yet, further reduction in maldistribution (φₘₐₓ< 5%) can be achieved in U-type absorbers if the tapered outlet header is combined with a cylindrical inlet header in the range of AR≤ 3.34 and DR≤ 0.24. In this case, a compromise between additional pressure drop and flow distribution degree should be found. The present study offers a systematic approach for conducting thermo-hydraulic analysis in flat-plate solar collectors with complex absorber compositions and geometries.

Abstract By 2021, all new buildings in the European Union must be nearly zero-energy buildings in order to contribute to the achievement of the EU-CO2 neutrality by 2050. As the technical options to achieve highly-efficient building envelopes are available and well-known, there is no doubt that the most promising Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems will include heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. However, there exist ongoing discussions on the optimal system layout and the integration of storage to achieve nZEB. In particular, there are some good arguments in favour of very low demand, while contrariwise also high flexibility is seen as an important feature to enable so-called grid-reactive operation of the building stock. Integration of onsite storage and its influence on the energy demand of the buildings and the corresponding electric load profile with focus on peak power is investigated.

Abstract The buildings sector is a main player in the decarbonization pathway as it contributes with a share of 40% of the total energy use in which space heating and domestic hot water are responsible for a considerable portion. A key lever to overcome the challenges in the buildings sector related to today’s extensive utilization of fossil fuels is the introduction of renewables-based district heating systems. Yet, most renewables fluctuate based on seasonal and hourly patterns. This pinpoints the significance of large-scale seasonal thermal energy storage (TES) systems. Yet, such large-scale systems require a thorough planning in order to avoid the high investment cost. Consequently, numerical models gain importance as an alternative. Accordingly, this work develops numerical finite element models for large-scale tanks and pits. To obtain credibility in the approach, the models are then validated against measured data from the Dronninglund pit TES in Denmark. The outcomes exemplify that the simulation method is suitable and the models can be calibrated very well. Next, the work examines pit TES performance considering two energetic efficiency indicators and two stratification quality measures. The performance evaluation shows that the Dronninglund pit achieved an efficiency of 90%, whereas only 76% of the pit energy capacity was effectively utilized for the year 2015. Further, the pit maintained a moderate quality of stratification for longer periods. The work later demonstrates the influence of TES geometry on stratification quality by comparing the MIX number between Dronninglund PTES and a corresponding cylindrical TES.
