    Abstract Background: Major burn injuries may have long-term mental health consequences, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study extended prior work to investigate DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn as well as the contribution of two sets of early psychological risk factors to DSM-5 PTSD symptoms: Established PTSD risk factors (prior adjustment problems, past trauma, perception of life threat, peritraumatic emotions and dissociation) and theory-derived cognitive factors (negative appraisals of the trauma and its sequelae, memory disorganization, trauma-related rumination, and thought suppression).
    Method: The current study recruited a sample of 118 adult burn patients (75.4% men, mean age 41.8, mean TBSA 18.3%) consecutively admitted to a large regional burn center in Northern Taiwan, who were assessed at 6, 12, and 24 months following their burn injury.
    Results: A total of 11.0%, 5.9%, and 7.6% met probable DSM-5 PTSD at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. The rates rose to 15.3%, 10.2%, and 11.0% using the cutoff method. After controlling for covariates, the regression model with theory-derived cognitive factors explained an additional significant 15.9%, 17.2%, and 17.7% of the variance in DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. In contrast, the regression model with established PTSD risk factors explained an additional significant 7.2%, 14.4%, and 10.5% of the variance in DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. Of all predictors, negative appraisals of intrusions was consistently and strongly predictive of DSM-5 PTSD symptomatology post-burn across time, followed by prior depression.
    Conclusions: The results underscore the role of early cognitive risk factors in the development and persistence of DSM-5 PTSD symptomatology following burn injury.

    Abstract Objective: Burn injuries can be traumatic and increase the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression (MDD). The current study examined the incremental contribution of established predictors of PTSD and theory-derived cognitive predictors to PTSD and depression early after burn.
    Methods: Participants were 118 adult burn patients consecutively admitted to the largest burn center in Taiwan who completed a baseline assessment, of which 101 (85.6%) were reassessed 3-month post-burn.
    Results: Three months after the burn, 17.8% and 17.8% of participants met probable DSM-5 PTSD and MDD, respectively. The rates rose to 24.8% and 31.7% using a cut-off of 28 on the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale for DSM-5 and 10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. After controlling for potential confounders, the model with established predictors uniquely explained 26.0% and 16.5% of the variance of PTSD and depressive symptoms 3-month post-burn, respectively. The model with theory-derived cognitive predictors uniquely explained 17.4% and 14.4% of the variance, respectively. Posttrauma social support and thought suppression remained significant predictors of both outcomes.
    Conclusion: A sizeable subset of burn patients suffer from PTSD and depression early after burn. Social and cognitive factors are implicated in the development and recovery of post-burn psychopathology.

    Abstract Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes that activate inflammatory responses by inducing pyroptosis and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Along with many previous studies on inflammatory responses and diseases induced by canonical inflammasomes, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that non-canonical inflammasomes, such as mouse caspase-11 and human caspase-4 inflammasomes, are emerging key players in inflammatory responses and various diseases. Flavonoids are natural bioactive compounds found in plants, fruits, vegetables, and teas and have pharmacological properties in a wide range of human diseases. Many studies have successfully demonstrated that flavonoids play an anti-inflammatory role and ameliorate many inflammatory diseases by inhibiting canonical inflammasomes. Others have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory roles of flavonoids in inflammatory responses and various diseases, with a new mechanism by which flavonoids inhibit non-canonical inflammasomes. This review discusses recent studies that have investigated the anti-inflammatory roles and pharmacological properties of flavonoids in inflammatory responses and diseases induced by non-canonical inflammasomes and further provides insight into developing flavonoid-based therapeutics as potential nutraceuticals against human inflammatory diseases.

    Abstract Introduction: Mixed findings have been reported about the computation of scalar or/and ad-hoc implicatures in primarily school-age autistic verbal children and adolescents: while some studies reported their struggles with both implicatures, others observed their strengths in computing scalar implicatures. This study extends the previous investigation by testing the derivation of scalar (including both number and quantifier) and ad-hoc implicatures of a younger group of Mandarin-speaking autistic 4-8-year-olds; moreover, we assess the biological, linguistic, and cognitive factors affecting children's implicature acquisition.
    Methods: The participants included 22 4-8-year-old autistic verbal children (mean age = 67.64 months) and 19 typically developing (TD) children who did not significantly differ in age, receptive vocabulary, and non-verbal IQ. Both groups completed a computer-based Truth Value Judgment task, assessing their knowledge of scalar (involving the number 'three' and the quantifier 'some') and ad-hoc implicatures. We also examined whether their implicature computation was linked to age, receptive vocabulary, non-verbal IQ, and Theory of Mind (ToM).
    Results: Compared with the TD controls, autistic children derived significantly fewer scalar and ad-hoc implicatures. Specifically, TD children successfully computed number and ad-hoc implicatures, contrasting to the bimodal distribution of their pragmatic vs. logical responses to quantifier implicatures. Though autistic children performed better with number implicatures slightly above the chance level, they had difficulties in computing quantifier and ad-hoc implicatures. Further, autistic children's knowledge of the number and ad-hoc implicatures was linked to their ToM skills.
    Conclusions: These findings underscore the overall delayed implicature knowledge of young autistic children, and their low sensitivity to the implicatures is related to the core ToM deficits. Furthermore, our data confirm the coherent pattern of the earlier acquisition of number over quantifier implicatures and illuminate the distinct mechanisms underlying the computation of scalar vs. ad-hoc implicatures.

    Abstract An inflammatory response consists of two consecutive steps: priming and triggering, to prepare and activate inflammatory responses, respectively. The cardinal feature of the triggering step is the activation of intracellular protein complexes called inflammasomes, which provide a platform for the activation of inflammatory signaling pathways. Despite many studies demonstrating the regulatory roles of canonical inflammasomes in inflammatory liver diseases, the roles of newly discovered non-canonical inflammasomes in inflammatory liver diseases are still largely unknown. Recent studies have reported the regulatory roles of the caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome in inflammatory liver diseases, providing strong evidence that the caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome may play key roles in the pathogenesis of inflammatory liver diseases. This review comprehensively discusses the emerging roles of the caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome in the pathogenesis of inflammatory liver diseases, focusing on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and inflammatory liver injuries and its underlying mechanisms. This review highlights the current knowledge on the regulatory roles of the caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome in inflammatory liver diseases, providing new insights into the development of potential therapeutics to prevent and treat inflammatory liver diseases by targeting the caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome.

    Abstract In quantum metrology, measurement and estimation schemes are vital for achieving higher precision, along with initial state preparation. This article presents the compound measurement of parity and particle number, which is optimal for a broad range of states named equator states (ESs). ES encompasses most pure input states used in current studies and, more significantly, a wide range of mixed states. Moreover, the ES can be prepared directly using non-demolition parity measurement. We thus propose an improved quantum phase estimation protocol applicable to arbitrary input states, ensuring precision consistently surpassing that of the standard protocol. The proposed scheme is also demonstrated using a nonlinear interferometer, with the realization of the non-demolition parity measurement in atomic condensates.

    Abstract Most sea urchin species produce planktonic feeding larvae with distinct dorsal-ventral polarity. Such morphological indicators of polarity arise after gastrulation, when several morphogenesis and cell differentiation events occur differentially along the dorsal-ventral axis. For instance, the gut bends toward the ventral side where the mouth will form, skeletogenesis occurs initially near the ventral side with the forming skeleton extending dorsally, and pigment cells differentiate and embed in the dorsal ectoderm. The patterning mechanisms and gene regulatory networks underlying these events have been extensively studied. Two opposing TGF-β signaling pathways, Nodal and BMP, play key roles in all three germ layers to respectively pattern the sea urchin ventral and dorsal sides. In this chapter, I describe our current understanding of sea urchin dorsal-ventral patterning mechanisms. Additionally, differences in the patterning mechanisms observed in lecithotrophic sea urchins (nonfeeding larvae) and in cidaroid sea urchins are also discussed, along with evolutionary insights gained from comparative analyses.

    Abstract Inflammation, an innate immune response that prevents cellular damage caused by pathogens, consists of two successive mechanisms, namely priming and triggering. While priming is an inflammation-preparation step, triggering is an inflammation-activation step, and the central feature of triggering is the activation of inflammasomes and intracellular inflammatory protein complexes. Flavonoids are natural phenolic compounds predominantly present in plants, fruits, and vegetables and are known to possess strong anti-inflammatory activities. The anti-inflammatory activity of flavonoids has long been demonstrated, with the main focus on the priming mechanisms, while increasing numbers of recent studies have redirected the research focus on the triggering step, and studies have reported that flavonoids inhibit inflammatory responses and diseases by targeting inflammasome activation. Rheumatic diseases are systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases that primarily affect joints and connective tissues, and they are associated with numerous deleterious effects. Here, we discuss the emerging literature on the ameliorative role of flavonoids targeting inflammasome activation in inflammatory rheumatic diseases.
