    Abstract A 4.5-year-old female spayed Rex rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented as an emergency case for hyporexia, pigmenturia, and abnormal feces. The rabbit had been treated for intermittent hyporexia with outpatient medical management and over the next 2 months demonstrated intermittent signs of gastrointestinal stasis, which were only partially responsive to aggressive medical management. Serial radiographs demonstrated persistent gas within the cecum as well as left-sided, cranial displacement of the cecum. A partial cecal obstruction or volvulus was suspected but could not be confirmed, as advanced imaging and exploratory laparotomy were declined. Two months following its initial presentation, the rabbit developed acute signs of shock and colic, but arrested prior to emergency evaluation. Postmortem radiographs showed marked generalized gas dilation of the small intestines and cecum. Necropsy revealed a 360° mesenteric root torsion with devitalization of much of the small intestines, with an additional 180° rotation of the cecum. This case demonstrates that mesenteric root torsion occurs in rabbits and is an important consideration in rabbits presenting with acute shock or chronic, intractable gastrointestinal signs.

    Abstract Abstract The rapid emergency of data science, information technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) relies on massive data processing with high computing efficiency and low power consumption. However, the current von‐Neumann architecture system requires high‐energy budget to process data computing and storage between central computing unit and memory. To overcome this problem, neuromorphic computing system which mimics the operation of human brain has been proposed to perform computing in an energy‐efficient manner. Recently, organic–inorganic halide perovskite compounds have been demonstrated as promising components for neuromorphic devices owing to their strong light absorption, solution processability, and unique properties such as ion migration, carrier trapping effects and phase transition. In this review paper, we report recent advances of neuromorphic devices which employed organic–inorganic halide perovskite compounds by analyzing their fundamental operating mechanisms, device architectures, applications and future prospective.

    Abstract On September 30, 2021, a saildrone uncrewed surface vehicle intercepted Hurricane Sam in the northwestern tropical Atlantic and provided continuous observations near the eyewall. Measured surface ocean temperature unexpectedly increased during the first half of the storm. Saildrone current shear and upper-ocean structure from the nearest Argo profiles show an initial trapping of wind momentum by a strong halocline in the upper 30 m, followed by deeper mixing and entrainment of warmer subsurface water into the mixed layer. The ocean initial conditions provided to operational forecast models failed to capture the observed upper-ocean structure. The forecast models failed to simulate the warming and developed a surface cold bias of ~0.5°C by the time peak winds were observed, resulting in a 12-17% underestimation of surface enthalpy flux near the eyewall. Results imply that enhanced upper-ocean observations and, critically, improved assimilation into the hurricane forecast systems, could directly benefit hurricane intensity forecasts.

    Abstract A 4-month-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with unilateral conjunctivitis. The conjunctivitis was not responsive to topical antibiotic or anti-inflammatory therapy and continued to progress in severity. Conjunctival tissue was sampled and microsporidial conjunctivitis was diagnosed on histopathological evaluation of submitted samples. Medical therapy was initiated and included topical itraconazole, systemic itraconazole, and systemic fenbendazole. Serial serum chemistry panels and complete blood counts were monitored for potential side effects associated with the medications. Despite treatment, the conjunctivitis progressed and enucleation was performed. Histopathology on the enucleated globe confirmed the diagnosis of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis. Systemic itraconazole was administered at 5mg/kg orally for approximately 3 months. No abnormalities were detected on hematologic diagnostic testing during the treatment period. A computed tomographic scan was performed to monitor for systemic lesions, but no abnormalities were detected. About 12 months after initial presentation, the bearded dragon is healthy and there are no overt signs of disease.

    Abstract Background/aims: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the use of personal protective equipment for those involved in trachoma survey grading and trichiasis surgery. We sought to determine which configuration of a face shield would be less likely to impact grading accuracy and ability to conduct trichiasis surgery. The research also included assessment of comfort, ease of cleaning and robustness.
    Methods: There were three research phases. In phase 1, assessment of four potential face shield configurations was undertaken with principal trachoma graders and trichiasis surgeon trainers to decide which two options should undergo further testing. In phase 2, clarity of vision and comfort (in a classroom environment) of the two configurations were assessed compared with no face shield (control), while grading trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF). The second phase also included the assessment of impact of the configurations while performing trichiasis surgery using a training model. In phase 3, face shield ease of use was evaluated during routine surgical programmes.
    Results: In phase 2, 124 trachoma graders and 28 trichiasis surgeons evaluated the 2 face shield configurations selected in phase 1. TF agreement was high (kappa=0.83 and 0.82) for both configurations compared with not wearing a face shield. Comfort was reported as good by 51% and 32% of graders using the two configurations. Trichiasis skill scores were similar for both configurations.
    Conclusion: The face shield configuration that includes a cut-out for mounting the 2.5× magnifying loupes does not appear to impact the ability or comfort of trachoma graders or trichiasis surgeons to carry out their work.

    Abstract Background The epidemiology of trachoma in several Pacific Islands differs from other endemic settings, in that there is a high prevalence of clinical signs of trachoma, particularly trachomatous inflammation—follicular (TF), but few cases of trichiasis and limited evidence of ocular chlamydial infection. This so-called “Pacific enigma” has led to uncertainty regarding the appropriate public health response. In 2019 alongside Nauru’s national trachoma population survey, we performed bacteriological and serological assessments of children to better understand the typology of trachoma and to determine whether there is a need for trachoma interventions. Methods We used two-stage cluster sampling, examining residents aged ≥1 year and collecting household-level water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) variables. Children aged 1–9 years provided conjunctival swabs and finger-prick dried blood spots to investigate the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis nucleic acid and anti-Pgp3 antibodies, respectively. Principal Findings In 818 participants aged 1–9 years, the age-adjusted TF prevalence was 21.8% (95% CI 15.2–26.2%); ocular C. trachomatis prevalence was 34.5% (95% CI 30.6–38.9), and anti-Pgp3 antibody prevalence was 32.1% (95% CI 28.4%–36.3%). The age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of trichiasis in ≥15-year-olds was 0.3% (95% CI 0.00–0.85), but no individual with trichiasis had trachomatous scarring (TS). Multivariable analysis showed an association between age and both TF (OR per year of age 1.3 [95% CI 1.2–1.4]) and anti-Pgp3 positivity (OR 1.2 [95% CI 1.2–1.3]). There were high rates of access to water and sanitation and no WASH variable was associated with the presence of TF. Conclusions TF, nucleic acid, and age-specific antibody prevalence collectively indicate that high levels of C. trachomatis transmission among children present a high risk of ocular damage due to trachoma.     Abstract During the CINDY/DYNAMO field campaign (fall/winter 2011), intensive measurements of the upper ocean, including an array of several surface moorings and ship observations for the area around 75°E–80°E, Equator-10°S, were conducted. In this study, large-scale upper ocean variations surrounding the intensive array during the field campaign are described based on the analysis of satellite-derived data. Surface currents, sea surface height (SSH), sea surface salinity (SSS), surface winds and sea surface temperature (SST) during the CINDY/DYNAMO field campaign derived from satellite observations are analyzed. During the intensive observation period, three active episodes of large-scale convection associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) propagated eastward across the tropical Indian Ocean. Surface westerly winds near the equator were particularly strong during the events in late November and late December, exceeding 10 m/s. These westerlies generated strong eastward jets (>1 m/s) on the equator. Significant remote ocean responses to the equatorial westerlies were observed in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres in the central and eastern Indian Oceans. The anomalous SSH associated with strong eastward jets propagated eastward as an equatorial Kelvin wave and generated intense downwelling near the eastern boundary. The anomalous positive SSH then partly propagated westward around 4°S as a reflected equatorial Rossby wave, and it significantly influenced the upper ocean structure in the Seychelles-Chagos thermocline ridge about two months after the last MJO event during the field campaign. For the first time, it is demonstrated that subseasonal SSS variations in the central Indian Ocean can be monitored by Aquarius measurements based on the comparison with in situ observations at three locations. Children aged 1-9 years provided conjunctival swabs and finger-prick dried blood spots to investigate the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis nucleic acid and anti-Pgp3 antibodies, respectively.
    Principal findings: In 818 participants aged 1-9 years, the age-adjusted TF prevalence was 21.8% (95% CI 15.2-26.2%); ocular C. trachomatis prevalence was 34.5% (95% CI 30.6-38.9), and anti-Pgp3 antibody prevalence was 32.1% (95% CI 28.4%-36.3%). The age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of trichiasis in ≥15-year-olds was 0.3% (95% CI 0.00-0.85), but no individual with trichiasis had trachomatous scarring (TS). Multivariable analysis showed an association between age and both TF (OR per year of age 1.3 [95% CI 1.2-1.4]) and anti-Pgp3 positivity (OR 1.2 [95% CI 1.2-1.3]). There were high rates of access to water and sanitation and no WASH variable was associated with the presence of TF.
    Conclusions: TF, nucleic acid, and age-specific antibody prevalence collectively indicate that high levels of C. trachomatis transmission among children present a high risk of ocular damage due to trachoma. The absence of trichiasis with trachomatous scarring suggest a relatively recent increase in transmission intensity.
