    Abstract EDITORIAL: "Mind-controlled information transmission" is one of human's ultimate fantasies for the development of science and technology. On June 11, 2022, eLight Journal simultaneously published two research papers on brainwave-based metasurfaces, and proposed a new concept of metasurface controlled by mind for the first time in the world. This major scientific breakthrough rushed up to the hot search list of public media. It was read more than ten million times, and the related video has been played 600,000 times, which aroused the audience's strong interest and discussion, and really made a significant leap toward "mind control". We are greatly honored to invite Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu from National University of Singapore, the corresponding author of both above-mentioned articles and the co-Editor-in-Chief of eLight Journal, to have an exclusive interview. Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu showed us the profound interpretation of his research works and shared his unique insights on journal development and talent cultivation.

    Abstract Editorial: Holography utilizes the principles of wave interference and diffraction to record and reconstruct images, which can highly restore the three-dimensional features of objects and provide an immersive visual experience. Dennis Gabor proposed the concept of holography in 1947 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971. Holography has gradually developed into two major research directions: digital holography (DH) and computer-generated holography (CGH). Holography has empowered the development of fields such as 6G communication, intelligent healthcare, and commercial MR headsets. In recent years, the general solution to optical inverse problems contained in holography also provides theoretical support for its wide integration with computational lithography, optical metamaterials, optical neural networks, orbital angular momentum (OAM), and other areas. This demonstrates its enormous potential for research and application. We are delighted to invite Professor Liangcai Cao from Tsinghua University, a leading scientist in the field of holography, to give us a profound interpretation of the opportunities and challenges of holography. In the interview, Prof. Cao will take us on a journey through the history of holography, share fascinating stories from his academic visits and exchanges, and shed light on the mentor and tutor culture in teaching. Through this episode of "Light People," we will have the privilege of getting to know Prof. Cao on a deeper level.

    Abstract Editorial: In 2016, the news that Google's artificial intelligence (AI) robot AlphaGo, based on the principle of deep learning, won the victory over lee Sedol, the former world Go champion and the famous 9th Dan competitor of Korea, caused a sensation in both fields of AI and Go, which brought epoch-making significance to the development of deep learning. Deep learning is a complex machine learning algorithm that uses multiple layers of artificial neural networks to automatically analyze signals or data. At present, deep learning has penetrated into our daily life, such as the applications of face recognition and speech recognition. Scientists have also made many remarkable achievements based on deep learning. Professor Aydogan Ozcan from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) led his team to research deep learning algorithms, which provided new ideas for the exploring of optical computational imaging and sensing technology, and introduced image generation and reconstruction methods which brought major technological innovations to the development of related fields. Optical designs and devices are moving from being physically driven to being data-driven. We are much honored to have Aydogan Ozcan, Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and Chancellor's Professor of UCLA, to unscramble his latest scientific research results and foresight for the future development of related fields, and to share his journey of pursuing Optics, his indissoluble relationship with Light: Science & Applications (LSA), and his experience in talent cultivation.

    Abstract A large number of waxy maize landraces are distributed in Yunnan and surrounding areas, and abundant waxy alleles of different types are distributed in these landraces. The identification of waxy alleles is helpful to the protection and utilization of these waxy landraces. This study introduced structure characteristics of waxy genes from two specific landraces of Yunnan, Zinuoyumi and Myanmar Four-Row Wax. Zinuoyumi has two waxy alleles wx-Cin4 and wx-Cin4-2; Myanmar Four-Row Wax has three waxy alleles wx-D10, wx-Reina and wx-D11. The wx-Cin4-2 and wx-D11 are two types of waxy alleles first reported in this study. The wx-Cin4-2 has two mutation sites, deletion of 30 bp in exon 10, insertion of a 1,267 bp non-long terminal repeat (non-LTR) retrotransposon Cin4 in intron 10, and 13 bp extra sequence were found at 5' end of the Cin4; the mutation site of wx-D11 is a 1,082 bp deletion from exons 11 to 14 of the waxy gene and is replaced with a 72 bp filler sequence. This study enriched the type of waxy allele from Yunnan waxy maize landraces and further discussed the molecular basis for the formation of mutation sites of wx-Cin4-2 and wx-D11.

    Abstract Background: Breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) is an advanced breast disease that is difficult to treat and is associated with a high risk of death. Patient prognosis is usually poor, with reduced quality of life. In this context, we report the case of a patient with HER-2-positive BCBM treated with a macromolecular mAb (inetetamab) combined with a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI).
    Case summary: The patient was a 58-year-old woman with a 12-year history of type 2 diabetes. She was compliant with regular insulin treatment and had good blood glucose control. The patient was diagnosed with invasive carcinoma of the right breast (T3N1M0 stage IIIa, HER2-positive type) through aspiration biopsy of the ipsilateral breast due to the discovery of a breast tumor in February 2019. Immunohistochemistry showed ER (-), PR (-), HER-2 (3+), and Ki-67 (55-60%+). Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy,
    Conclusion: Inetetamab combined with small molecule TKI drugs, chemotherapy and radiation may be an effective regimen for maintaining stable disease in patients with BCBM.

    Abstract Ischemic heart disease, a prevalent cardiovascular disease with global significance, is associated with substantial morbidity. Timely and successful reperfusion is crucial for reducing infarct size and enhancing clinical outcomes. However, reperfusion may induce additional myocardium injury, manifesting as myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Pyroptosis is a regulated cell death pathway, the signaling pathway of which is activated during MI/R injury. In this process, the inflammasomes are triggered, initiating the cleavage of gasdermin proteins and pro-interleukins, which results in the formation of membrane pores and the maturation and secretion of inflammatory cytokines. Numerous preclinical evidence underscores the pivotal role of pyroptosis in MI/R injury. Inhibiting pyroptosis is cardioprotective against MI/R injury. Although certain agents exhibiting promise in preclinical studies for attenuating MI/R injury through inhibiting pyroptosis have been identified, the suitability of these compounds for clinical trials remains untested. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent developments in this field, with a specific emphasis on the impact of pyroptosis on MI/R injury. Deciphering these findings not only sheds light on new disease mechanisms but also paves the way for innovative treatments. And then the exploration of the latest advances in compounds that inhibit pyroptosis in MI/R is discussed, which aims to provide insights into potential therapeutic strategies and identify avenues for future research in the pursuit of effective clinical interventions.

    Abstract There is a pressing need for methods that can connect enantioenriched organic compounds with readily accessible building blocks via asymmetric functionalization of unreactive chemical bonds in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Herein, the asymmetric chemoselective cleavage of two unactivated C(Ar)-O bonds in the same molecule is disclosed for the first time through an unusual nickel-catalyzed carbomagnesiation. This reaction facilitates the evolution of a novel atroposelective ring-opening difunctionalization. Utilizing readily available dibenzo bicyclic substrates, diverse valuable axially chiral biaryls are furnished with high efficiencies. Synthetic elaborations showcase the application potential of this method. The features of this method include good atom-economy, multiple roles of the nucleophile, and a simple catalytic system that enables the precise magnesiation of an α-C(Ar)-O bond and arylation of a β-C(Ar)-O bond.

    Abstract This article explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on global ecological footprints, which has important implications for global sustainability in the digital age. Using the comprehensive evaluation index of AI constructed by the entropy method and the dataset at the global national level, we find that from 2010 to 2019, the overall level of global AI shows an upward trend, in which the growth rate of AI in developed countries is more pronounced and exhibits a stable growth trend, while the growth rate of AI in developing countries displays a trend of instability. The research results show that AI has a significant inhibitory effect on ecological footprints. This conclusion holds even after endogeneity and robustness tests. In addition, under the effect of globalization, the impact of AI on ecological footprints shows nonlinear characteristics. As globalization deepens, the marginal effect of AI in reducing the ecological footprint shows an increasing trend. These findings emphasize the important role of AI in environmental governance and provide a new and comprehensive perspective for policymakers. Therefore, the government should continue to support the research and application of AI, promote the cross-industry integration of AI, and play a positive role in the process of globalization to promote global sustainable development.
