Abstract The ultrastructure of Chlorella cells grown in darkness on a solid agar medium with organic additions aboard the Bion-10 biosatellite was studied. Certain differences in submicroscopic organization of organelles in the experimental cells were revealed compared to the Earth control. The changes are registered mainly in ultrastructure of energetic organelles--mitochondria and plastids of the experimental cells, in particular, an increase of mitochondria and their cristae size, as well as an increase of the total volume of mitochondrion per cell were established. The decrease of the starch amount in the plastid stroma and the electron density of the latter was also observed. In many experimental cells, the increase of condensed chromatin in the nuclei has been noted. Ultrastructural rearrangements in cells after laboratory experiment realized according to the thermogram registered aboard the Bion-10 were insignificant compared to the flight experiment. Data obtained are compared to results of space flight experiments carried out aboard the Bion-9 (polycomponent aquatic system) and the orbital station Mir (solid agar medium).

Abstract Ethyl 3-furfuryl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-2-carboxylate extremely readily undergoes hydrolysis in acid, alkaline, or neutral medium with formation of 2-(2-ethoxy-1,2-dioxoethylamino)-N-furfurylbenzamide. The reaction of ethyl 3-furfuryl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-2-carboxylate with phenylmagnesium bromide yields N-furfuryl-2-(2-hydroxy-2,2-diphenyl-1-oxoethylamino)benzamide as a result of hydrolytic cleavage of the quinazoline ring.

Abstract Analysis of experimental results involving both animals and plants showed that cell mitochondria considerably changed regarding organelles shape, matrix density, number and size of cristae. However, oxidative-reductive enzymes did not lose their activity (2). Moreover, there are some data concerning an increase in respiration intensity of plants grown on a horizontal clinostat (3) and in seedlings being on board of Biosatellite-11 (4). Similar rearrangements in mitochondria are also observed during clinorotation (5). Taking into account that energy supply of cells during their adaptation to various factors considerably depends on the functional activity of these organelles along with ultrastructure the activity of some enzymes of energetic and oxidative metabolism as well as the level of cell respiration in altered gravity was studied.

Abstract The effects of ABA treatment on the contents of polyamines (PAs) and proline (Pro) in the glycophyte Phaseolus vulgaris L. during plant adaptation to salt stress were studied. Two-week-old common bean seedlings grown in the phytotron chamber on the Jonson nutrient medium were subjected to salinity for 6 days by one-time NaCl addition to medium up to final concentrations of 50 and 100 mM. During first three days of salinity, the root system was daily treated with ABA (1, 5, 10, or 50 μM) for 30 min. Salt stress (100 mM NaCl) elevated the level of endogenous ABA, increased the content of Pro 14-fold, reduced sharply the content of free PAs (putrescine, spermidine, spermine, and cadaverine), and the accumulation of 1,3-diaminopropan, a product of oxidation of high-molecular PAs. Common bean plant treatment with 1 μM ABA weakened the adverse effects of salt stress (100 mM NaCl), which was manifested in the maintenance of plant growth, stimulation of chlorophyll (a and b) and carotenoid accumulation, a stabilization of water and Na⁺ balance. Seedling treatment with ABA suppressed NaCl-induced Pro and intracellular ABA accumulation and restored the levels of putrescine and spermidine. The content of spermine in the leaves of plants subjected to salt stress and treated with ABA was approximately threefold higher than in control plants, whereas the content of cadaverine increased under similar conditions more than fivefold. Simultaneously, the contents of 1,3-diaminopropan and malondialdehyde as well as activity of superoxide dismutase were reduced, which indicates a weakening of oxidative stress, one of the possible causes of defensive ABA effects against salt stress. In addition, the suppression by exogenous ABA of Pro accumulation and stimulation of PA content under salt stress confirm indirectly our hypothesis that ABA is involved in the coordinated regulation of two biosynthetic pathways, Pro and PA formation, which use a common precursor, glutamate, and play an important protective role during stress in plants.

Abstract By heating arylamides of N-ethoxalylanthranilic acid in the acetic acid mediun in the presence of triethylamine the corresponding ethyl 3-aryl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-2-carboxylates were obtained.
