Abstract We discuss the beam-energy dependence of ratios of the first four cumulants of the net-proton number, calculated using a phenomenologically motivated model in which critical mode fluctuations couple to protons and anti-protons. The model takes into account an impact of the underlying $O(4)$ criticality on the QCD phase diagram in the presence of a $Z(2)$ critical point. This allows us to capture qualitatively both the monotonic behavior of the lowest-order ratio and the non-monotonic behavior of higher-order ratios which are seen in the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We also discuss the dependence of our results on the coupling strength between the critical mode and the protons as well as the location of the critical point.

Abstract Gait analysis may serve various purposes related to health care, such as the estimation of elderly people's risk of falling. This paper is devoted to gait analysis based on data from depth sensors which are suitable for use both at healthcare facilities and in monitoring systems dedicated to household environments. This paper is focused on the comparison of three methods for spatiotemporal gait analysis based on data from depth sensors, involving the analysis of the movement trajectories of the knees, feet, and centre of mass. The accuracy of the results obtained using those methods was assessed for different depth sensors' viewing angles and different types of subject clothing. Data were collected using a Kinect v2 device. Five people took part in the experiments. Data from a Zebris FDM platform were used as a reference. The obtained results indicate that the viewing angle and the subject's clothing affect the uncertainty of the estimates of spatiotemporal gait parameters, and that the method based on the trajectories of the feet yields the most information, while the method based on the trajectory of the centre of mass is the most robust.

Abstract Background: One of the most effective and useful methods to explore the content of biological databases is searching with nucleotide or protein sequences as a query. However, especially in the case of nucleic acids, due to the large volume of data generated by the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, this approach is often not available. The hierarchical organization of the NGS records is primarily designed for browsing or text-based searches of the information provided in metadata-related keywords, limiting the efficiency of database exploration.
Findings: We developed an automated pipeline that incorporates the well-established NGS data-processing tools and procedures to allow easy and effective sampling of the NCBI SRA database records. Given a file with query nucleotide sequences, our tool estimates the matching content of SRA accessions by probing only a user-defined fraction of a record's sequences. Based on the selected parameters, it allows performing a full mapping experiment with records that meet the required criteria. The pipeline is designed to be easy to operate-it offers a fully automatic setup procedure and is fixed on tested supporting tools. The modular design and implemented usage modes allow a user to scale up the analyses into complex computational infrastructure.
Conclusions: We present an easy-to-operate and automated tool that expands the way a user can access and explore the information contained within the records deposited in the NCBI SRA database.

Abstract Hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) are a special type of material, possessing combined properties that belong to alloys and metals according to market demands. Therefore, they are used in different areas of industry and the properties of this type of material are useful in engineering applications, e.g., in aircraft engines and electrotechnical parts. The structure of the material requires a number of scientific studies to develop an appropriate processing technology. The paper presents the susceptibility of material from the HMMCs group with the EN AC-44300 (AISi12(Fe)) aluminum alloy matrix with a two-component reinforcement made of alumina particles (AP) and aluminosilicate fibers (AF) to thermal treatment with a laser beam. During this process, laser engraving of the researched material with variable beam power

Abstract Drug-induced ototoxicity resulting from therapy with aminoglycoside antibiotics and loop diuretics is one of the main well-known causes of hearing loss in patients. Unfortunately, no specific protection and prevention from hearing loss are recommended for these patients. This study aimed at evaluating the ototoxic effects produced by mixtures of amikacin (AMI, an aminoglycoside antibiotic) and furosemide (FUR, a loop diuretic) in the mouse model as the hearing threshold decreased by 20% and 50% using auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). Ototoxicity was produced by the combinations of a constant dose of AMI (500 mg/kg; i.p.) on FUR-induced hearing threshold decreases, and a fixed dose of FUR (30 mg/kg; i.p.) on AMI-induced hearing threshold decreases, which were determined in two sets of experiments. Additionally, the effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC; 500 mg/kg; i.p.) on the hearing threshold decrease of 20% and 50% were determined by means of an isobolographic transformation of interactions to detect the otoprotective action of NAC in mice. The results indicate that the influence of a constant dose of AMI on FUR-induced hearing threshold decreases was more ototoxic in experimental mice than a fixed dose of FUR on AMI-induced ototoxicity. Moreover, NAC reversed the AMI-induced, but not FUR-induced, hearing threshold decreases in this mouse model of hearing loss. NAC could be considered an otoprotectant in the prevention of hearing loss in patients receiving AMI alone and in combination with FUR.

Abstract Although most of the genes encoding tRNAs in plants are dispersed throughout the genome, a fraction of them form tRNA gene clusters. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the smallest of tRNA clusters on chromosome 5 consists of four tRNA-Cys-GCA genes placed within repeating units of 0.4 kbp. A systematic analysis of the genomic sequences of syntenic regions from various ecotypes of A. thaliana showed that the general structure of the cluster, consisting of a tRNA-Cys pseudogene followed by repeating units containing tRNA-Cys genes, is well conserved. However, there is significant heterogeneity in the number of repeating units between different ecotypes. A unique feature of this cluster is the presence of putative transposable elements (Helitron). In addition, two further tRNA-Cys gene mini-clusters (gene pairs) in A. thaliana were identified. RNA-seq-based evaluation of expression of tRNA-Cys-GCA genes showed a positive signal for 11 out of 13 unique transcripts. An analysis of the conservation of the tRNA-Cys clusters from A. thaliana with the corresponding regions from four other Arabidopsis species suggests a sequence of events that led to the divergence of these regions.

Abstract Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are a special class of materials carrying combined properties that belongs to alloys and metals according to market demands. Therefore, they are used in different areas of industry, and the properties of this type of material are useful in engineering applications. Machining of such composites is of great importance to finalize the fabrication process with improved part quality. However, the process implies several challenges due to the complexity of the cutting processes and random material structure. The current study aims to examine machinability characteristics. Abstract Carduus nutans L. (Compositae) has been extensively used for medicinal purposes. As other representatives of the genus it is implemented in the treatment of liver disorders and used as diuretic and digestive agent. Previous studies have determined the predominant classes of secondary metabolites in Carduus species. Among the major representatives of their extracts flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, sterols and terpenes were identified.
