Abstract A facile synthesis of carbo- and heterohelicenes was achieved via tandem cycloaromatization of bisacetal precursors, which were readily prepared through C–C bond formation by Suzuki–Miyaura coupling. This cyclization was efficiently realized by a catalytic amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) in a cation-stabilizing solvent, 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol (HFIP), which readily allowed gram-scale syntheses of higher-order helicenes, double helical helicenes, and heterohelicenes.

Abstract Abstract A multicenter randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the effectiveness of incisional and nonincisional surgical techniques for treating lower lid epiblepharon in children. The study included 89 eyes from 50 children aged 3–15 years (mean, 7.5 ± 2.4 years) with moderate lower lid epiblepharon. Patients were randomly assigned to either incisional (modified Hotz procedure with lid margin splitting; 45 eyes of 25 patients) or nonincisional (44 eyes of 25 patients) surgery groups. Treatment outcomes and changes in astigmatism were evaluated 6 months after surgery. Incisional surgery provided a significantly higher percentage (77.8%) of well-corrected treatment results (P = 0.026; odds ratio, 2.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.07–8.22) than nonincisional surgery (55.4%). The mean change in astigmatism 6 months after surgery was − 0.24 ± 0.42 and − 0.01 ± 0.47 D in the incisional and nonincisional surgery groups, respectively. The improvement in astigmatism was significantly higher in the incisional surgery group than in the nonincisional surgery group (P = 0.008). The incisional surgical treatment for moderate epiblepharon in children resulted in a higher number of well-corrected patients, indicating an absence of both ciliary touch and superficial keratitis as well as statistically significant improvements in astigmatism correction.

Abstract In the cochlear auditory epithelia, sensory hair and supporting cells are arranged in a checkerboard-like mosaic pattern, which is conserved across a wide range of species. The cell adhesion molecules nectin-1 and nectin-3 are required for this pattern formation. The checkerboard-like pattern is thought to be necessary for auditory function, but has never been examined. Here, we showed the significance of checkerboard-like cellular pattern in the survival and function of sensory hair cells in the cochlear auditory epithelia of nectin-3 knockout (KO) mice. Nectin-3 KO mice showed progressive hearing loss associated with degeneration of aberrantly attached hair cells via apoptosis. Apoptotic hair cell death was due to the disorganization of tight junctions between the hair cells. Our study revealed that the checkerboard-like cellular pattern in the auditory epithelium provides a structural basis for ensuring the survival of cochlear hair cells and hearing function.

Abstract To understand and obtain basic information on sex differentiation in the kisslip cuttlefish (Sepia lycidas), the gonadal sex differentiation process was investigated histologically. An undifferentiated gonad consisting of germ cells and somatic cells was found to form at a caudal site in the space between the internal yolk sacks of cuttlefish embryos at 14 and 21 days after spawning (DAS). Sexual dimorphism in the gonad was first detected at around 28 DAS. Meiotic oocytes were observed as the first visible morphological characteristic of ovaries in the gonads of some cuttlefish embryos at 28 DAS. In other individuals, neither meiotic germ cells, nor the appearance of a testicular structure, were observed in the gonad even after 10 days post hatching (DPH). Seminiferous tubules, consisting of a small number of spermatogonia and a surrounding basement membrane, were the first visible morphological characteristic of the testis in the male gonad, detected at around 20 DPH. This is the third report on the gonadal sex differentiation process in cephalopods.

Abstract Abstract Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is one of the most attractive chemical reactions, since it converts global‐warming gases into valuable syngas including hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Numerous previous studies used metal oxides catalysis supports, such as Al2O3, but their operating temperature was very high and severe coking occurred and deteriorated their catalytic activities. The present study reports that a metal carbide like tantalum carbide (TaC) acts as a multifunctional catalyst support for the DRM reaction, including light‐harvesting properties for saving energy operation as well as an anticoking property for long‐term stability. Nickel nanoparticles loaded on tantalum carbide (Ni/TaC) are prepared by impregnation and reductive hydrogen treatment. TaC particles act as a light‐harvesting support to promote the DRM reaction by photon irradiation through plasmonic photothermal energy conversion in TaC. Furthermore, Ni/TaC exhibits an excellent long‐term anticoking property, as compared to Ni loaded on conventional metal oxide supports such as Al2O3 or Ta2O5. According to the sole gas condition's experiment, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, the oxy‐carbide layer near the interface between TaC and Ni plays an essential role in imparting the efficient anticoking property of Ni/TaC.

Abstract Abstract CO2 oxidative coupling of methane has been achieved by using CO2 as the oxidant. We explored various catalysts with the capability of producing C2,3 hydrocarbons and found that the use of a CaO-based oxide with sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) allowed for remarkable direct methane conversion with a C2,3 yield of 6.6% at 950 °C. Microstructural characterisations showed that the optimal sample contained sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) covered with fine calcium oxide particles with chloride doping. Interestingly, sodium carbonate acted as a molten salt catalyst in this scenario. The synthesised active components are earth-abundant and can increase the possibility of achieving higher yields of hydrocarbons.

Abstract 1,1-Difluoro-1-alkenes bearing a biaryl-2-yl group effectively underwent site-selective intramolecular iodoarylation by the appropriate cationic iodine species. Iodoarylation of 2-(2-aryl-3,3-difluoroallyl)biaryls proceeded via regioselective carbon–carbon bond formation at the carbon atoms in β-position to the fluorine substituents, thereby constructing dibenzo-fused six-membered carbocycles bearing a difluoroiodomethyl group. In contrast, 2-(3,3-difluoroallyl)biaryls underwent a similar cyclization at the α-carbon atoms to afford ring-difluorinated seven-membered carbocycles.

Abstract Hydrogen boride (HB) sheets are two-dimensional materials comprising a negatively charged hexagonal boron network and positively charged hydrogen atoms with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. Herein, we report the spontaneous formation of highly dispersed Ni nanoclusters on HB sheets. The spontaneous reduction reaction of Ni ions by the HB sheets was monitored by in-situ measurements with an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. Acetonitrile solutions of Ni complexes and acetonitrile dispersions of the HB sheets were mixed in several molar ratios (the HB:Ni molar ratio was varied from 100:0.5 to 100:20), and the changes in the absorbance were measured over time. In all cases, the results suggest that Ni metal clusters grow on the HB sheets, considering the increase in absorbance with time. The absorbance peak position shifts to the higher wavelength as the Ni ion concentration increases. Transmission electron microscopy images of the post-reaction products indicate the formation of Ni nanoclusters, with sizes of a few nanometers, on the HB sheets, regardless of the preparation conditions. These highly dispersed Ni nanoclusters supported on HB sheets will be used for catalytic and plasmonic applications and as hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract Abstract We aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence and investigated factors associated with seropositivity after the second SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. This retrospective study conducted between June and November 2021 included 106 KT recipients and 127 healthy controls who received the second dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine at least 7 days before the measurement of antibody titers. The antibody titer against the receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein was determined. We compared seroprevalence rates (immunoglobulin G [IgG] level of ≥ 0.8 or ≥ 15 U/mL) between the healthy controls and KT recipients and identified factors associated with impaired humoral response. The seroprevalence rate of the healthy controls and KT recipients was 98% and 22%, respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age > 53 years, rituximab use, mycophenolate mofetil use, and KT vintage < 7 years were negatively associated with the rate of anti-SARS-CoV-2 S IgG ≥ 15 U/mL in KT recipients. ABO blood type incompatible KT was not significantly associated with seroprevalence. Humoral response after the second BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was greatly hindered by immunosuppression therapy in KT recipients. Older age, rituximab use, mycophenolate mofetil use, and KT vintage may play key roles in seroconversion.

Abstract Abstract The symptoms of Meniere’s disease (MD) are generally considered to be related to endolymphatic hydrops (EH). There are many recent reports supporting the possibility that vasopressin (VP) is closely linked to the formation of EH in Meniere’s disease. Based on this, we developed a clinically relevant animal model of Meniere’s disease in which a VP type 2 receptor agonist was administered after electrocauterization of the endolymphatic sac. We report live imaging of the internal structure, and functional changes of the inner ear after electrocauterization of the endolymphatic sac and administration of a VP type 2 receptor agonist. In this model, the development of EH was visualized in vivo using optical coherence tomography, there was no rupture of Reissner’s membrane, and low-tone hearing loss and vertiginous attacks were observed. This study suggested that acute attacks are caused by the abrupt development of EH. This is the first report of live imaging of the development of EH induced by the administration of a VP type 2 receptor agonist.
