Abstract The constancy test for quality control of X-ray image processing devices was evaluated using long-term and continuous constancy test results. Control was set so that under specific imaging conditions, variation in exposure dose is within 20% from the base line and variation in system sensitivity (S-value) obtained from images scanned with imaging plate is within 40%. Controlling the exposure dose enabled adjustments of tube currents and organized exchanges of the X-ray tube. Controlling the S-value allowed adjustments from increase due to age as well as organized exchanges of the photomultiplier tube foundation of the computed radiography scanner when control range is rapidly exceeded. Results from long-term and continuous constancy tests were of extreme value in comprehending the condition of the device for early detection of abnormalities, and thus indicate the significance of constancy tests for quality control of image processing device.

Abstract Potassium (K) is a major plant nutrient. K+ is taken up by channel and transporter proteins in roots and translocated from roots to shoots via the xylem. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the K+ transporter NPF7.3 mediates K+ loading into the xylem and the transcription factor MYB59 is responsible for NPF7.3 expression. Here, we demonstrate that MYB59 is regulated by alternative splicing in response to K availability. Three splicing isoforms of MYB59 are detected in roots: an isoform with the first intron spliced out encodes a protein with the full DNA-binding motif (MYB59α), and two isoforms with the first intron retained partially or completely encode a protein missing part of the DNA-binding motif (MYB59β). Functional analysis showed that only MYB59α is capable of inducing the expression of NPF7.3. The abundance of the MYB59α isoform increased under low K, but the total abundance of MYB59 transcripts did not change, indicating that MYB59α is increased by modification of the splicing pattern in response to low K. Although MYB59α is increased by low K, NPF7.3 expression remained constant independent of K. In addition, there was no significant difference in NPF7.3 expression between an MYB59 knockout mutant and the wild type under normal K. These results suggest that an unknown mechanism is involved in NPF7.3 expression under normal K and switches roles with MYB59 under low K. We propose that the regulation of MYB59 by alternative splicing is required for the maintenance of shoot K concentration in adaptation to low K.

Abstract Background: Anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) is a pain-free alternative to defibrillation shock for monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT). Intrinsic ATP (iATP) is a novel algorithm of auto-programmed ATP. However, the advantage of iATP over conventional ATP in clinical cases is still unknown.
Case summary: A 49-year-old man with no significant past medical history was transferred to our institution with sudden-onset fatigue from working on a farm. A 12-lead electrocardiogram showed monomorphic sustained wide QRS tachycardia with a right bundle branch block pattern and superior axis deviation with a cycle length (CL) of 300 ms. Sustained monomorphic VT originating from the left ventricle due to underlying vasospastic angina was diagnosed by contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, coronary angiography, and the acetylcholine stress test, and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation was performed. Nine months later, a clinical VT episode with a CL of 300 ms was observed, which could not be terminated by three sequences of conventional burst pacing. Ventricular tachycardia was finally terminated by a third iATP sequence without any acceleration.
Discussion: Although standard burst pacing by conventional ATP reached the VT circuit, it failed to terminate the VT. Using the post-pacing interval, iATP automatically calculated the appropriate number of S1 pulses required to reach the VT circuit. In iATP, the S2 pulses are delivered with a calculated coupling interval based on the estimated effective refractory period during tachycardia. In this case, iATP might have led to less aggressive S1 stimulation, followed by aggressive S2 stimulation, which probably helped terminate the VT without any acceleration.

Abstract Increasing nutrient uptake and use efficiency in plants can contribute to improved crop yields and reduce the demand for fertilizers in crop production. In this study, we characterized a rice mutant, 88n which showed long roots under low nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) conditions. Low expression levels of N transporter genes were observed in 88n root, and total N concentration in 88n shoots were decreased, however, C concentrations and shoot dry weight in 88n were comparable to that in WT. Therefore, 88n showed high nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). mRNA accumulation of Pi transporter genes was higher in 88n roots, and Pi concentration and uptake activity were higher in 88n than in WT. Therefore, 88n also showed high phosphorus uptake efficiency (PUpE). Molecular genetic analysis revealed that the causal gene of 88n phenotypes was OsbZIP1, a monocot-specific ortholog of the A. thaliana bZIP transcription factor HY5. Similar to the hy5 mutant, chlorophyll content in roots was decreased and root angle was shallower in 88n than in WT. Finally, we tested the yield of 88n in paddy fields over 3 years because 88n mutant plants showed higher PUpE and NUtE activity and different root architecture at the seedling stage. 88n showed large panicles and increased panicle weight/plant. Taken together, a mutation in OsbZIP1 could contribute to improved crop yields.

Abstract The decrease in quadriceps strength after anterior quadratus lumborum block (AQLB) has not been quantified. This prospective cohort study investigated the incidence of quadriceps weakness after AQLB. We enrolled patients undergoing robot-assisted partial nephrectomy, and AQLB was performed at the L2 level with 30 mL of 0.375% ropivacaine. We evaluated each quadriceps' maximal voluntary isometric contraction using a handheld dynamometer preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 and 4 days. The incidence of muscle weakness was defined as a 25% reduction in muscle strength compared with the preoperative baseline, and "muscle weakness possibly caused by nerve block" was defined as a 25% reduction compared with the non-block side. We also assessed the numerical rating scale and quality of recovery-15 scores. Thirty participants were analyzed. The incidence of muscle weakness compared with preoperative baseline and the non-block side was 13.3% and 30.0%, respectively. Patients with a numerical rating scale ≥ 4 or quality of recovery-15 score < 122, which was classified as moderate or poor, had decreased muscle strength with relative risks of 1.75 and 2.33, respectively. All patients ambulated within 24 h after surgery. The incidence of quadriceps weakness possibly caused by nerve block was 13.3%; however, all patients could ambulate after 1 day.
