Abstract The superconducting fragment separator (Super-FRS) is the magnetic high-resolution spectrometer, which will be coupled to the heavy-ion synchrotron complex at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR. It will enable a variety of unique nuclear physics experiments. Key examples of the experimental program are presented, for instance the production and study of exotic hypernuclei (i.e.: nuclei far-off stability containing hyperons), the production and study of mesic atoms (i.e.: atoms containing bound mesons, like pions or eta mesons), the discovery of new neutron-rich isotopes, the search for new phenomena in weakly bound or dilute nuclear systems, and the search for neutron radioactivity, an elementary radioactive decay mode, which has not been discovered yet.

Abstract The chemical composition of plant leaves often reflects environmental contamination. The authors analyzed images of plant leaves to investigate the regional radioactivity ecology resulting from the 2011 accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Japan. The present study is not an evaluation of the macro radiation dose per weight, which has been performed previously, but rather an image analysis of the radioactive dose per leaf, allowing the capture of various gradual changes in radioactive contamination as a function of elapsed time. In addition, the leaf analysis method has potential applications in the decontamination of food plants or other materials.

Abstract Soil deposition density maps of gamma-ray emitting radioactive nuclides from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident were constructed on the basis of results from large-scale soil sampling. In total 10,915 soil samples were collected at 2168 locations. Gamma rays emitted from the samples were measured by Ge detectors and analyzed using a reliable unified method. The determined radioactivity was corrected to that of June 14, 2011 by considering the intrinsic decay constant of each nuclide. Finally the deposition maps were created for (134)Cs, (137)Cs, (131)I, (129m)Te and (110m)Ag. The radioactivity ratio of (134)Cs-(137)Cs was almost constant at 0.91 regardless of the locations of soil sampling. The radioactivity ratios of (131)I and (129m)Te-(137)Cs were relatively high in the regions south of the Fukushima NPP site. Effective doses for 50 y after the accident were evaluated for external and inhalation exposures due to the observed radioactive nuclides. The radiation doses from radioactive cesium were found to be much higher than those from the other radioactive nuclides.

Abstract The construction of a genetic linkage map is the first, fundamental step to analyze the genetic properties of any organism. For this purpose, the restriction landmark genome scanning method (RLGS) can be used and has been shown to have high productivity in various genetic analyses. However, construction of a genetic linkage map by the RLGS method is laborious, because hundreds of spots must be scored, usually by visual observation. In order to reduce human involvement in the data processing, we developed an image analysis software, RAT (RLGS Analysis Tool). We evaluated its accuracy and feasibility by comparing the parental distribution patterns of RLGS spots obtained by RAT and by human observation, using Syrian hamster strain backcross progeny. We then used RAT to construct a genetic linkage map of the recombinant inbred strain SMXA. We were able to obtain 121 progenitor strain-specific spots that were assigned to a specific chromosome.
