Abstract Diesel exhaust (DE) is an important pollution source widely existing in the living and production environment, which is closely related to the health of the public and occupational groups. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified DE as a Group 1 carcinogen. Considering the negative health impacts on the respiratory system due to DE exposure in vitro, it is crucial to apply reliable test systems allowing accurate assessment of the biological effects of DE. The exposure technology of respiratory system in vitro is considered as one of the feasible measures to implement the 3R (reduce, refine, and replace) principle in animal experiments. Compared with the traditional submerged culture in vitro models, the air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure technology has the advantages including fewer influencing factors, easier exposure condition control, and shorter exposure cycle. ALI has become an important tool to study molecular events associated with physiology and pathology of respiratory system, and action modes and interactions of different cell types. Also, ALI has been increasingly widely used because it can simulate the actual processes of human respiratory system cells and/or tissues to DE exposure. This review was intended to introduce the development and advantages of ALI exposure technology, and further summarized the application progress of ALI exposure technology in studying the respiratory toxicity induced by DE exposure in vitro, so as to provide new ideas and pathways for the use of ALI exposure technology in the study of biomarkers and mechanisms of respiratory toxicity associated with DE exposure, and provide basic data to screen and promote biomarkers for exposed populations.

Abstract The persistent increase in plastic consumption poses a formidable challenge to attaining climate objectives and mitigating plastic pollution, prompting a global movement towards “plastic reduction”. Given the large number and scale of colleges, it is crucial to analyze the potential for “plastic reduction” on campuses to integrate green and low-carbon practices. This study constructed a source–emission–grave (SEG) plastic waste evaluation framework, which chose Xi’an Shiyou University in Western China as the research object. Furthermore, a tailored plastic-reduction scheme is designed based on students’ daily consumption patterns. The evaluation effectively measures the university’s potential for reducing plastic usage and its direct environmental benefits. Results indicate that by promoting green consumption practices, there could be a potential 45% reduction in plastic usage among students in their daily routines, resulting in an annual per capita decrease of 4.4 kg of plastic consumption and utilization. The aforementioned leads to four environmental benefits, namely raw materials, savings in energy consumption, reduction in carbon emissions, and a decrease in plastic waste, resulting in a total value of CNY 45. If this program were implemented nationwide across colleges and universities, students could collectively reduce their annual plastic consumption by 162,000 tons within their daily lives while simultaneously generating direct economic benefits worth CNY 1.8 billion. These findings can serve as valuable references for other universities in devising effective initiatives to mitigate plastic consumption.

Abstract At the turn of the century, facing the challenge of information and technology, environmental education, and talent competition, the world's major environmentally, educationally developed countries have entered the wave of environmental education reform. This was promulgated in 1999, and our country also successively promulgated through “the central committee of the communist party of China under the State Council on deepening environmenta education reform and comprehensively promote quality environmental education decision” in 2001 the “basic teaching environmental education course reform outline (try out),” launched to “deepen the environmental education reform and comprehensively promote quality environmental education” for the purpose of the foundation environmental education course and teaching reform. The curriculum reform is characterized by government leadership, expert guidance, and teacher participation. Its specific approach is top-down, overall promotion, concept guidance, experimental exploration, and gradual expansion, which has achieved a lot of theoretical and practical achievements. However, the practice of more than ten years has proved that the goal of the curriculum reform of basic environmental education has not been safely realized, the classroom has not undergone fundamental changes, and the advanced curriculum concept and curriculum system have not been transformed into advanced classroom teaching practice. This paper mainly discusses the influencing factors of the policy environment of environmental education development in China and analyzes the trend of reform in combination with the history of environmental education. On the one hand, the research of this paper can enrich the research theory of pedagogy; on the other hand, it can provide reference for the practical environmental education reform and have rich significance in theory and practice.

Abstract The utilization of natural gas hydrates as an alternative energy source has garnered significant attention due to their proven potential. Despite the successful offshore natural gas hydrate production tests, commercial exploitation has not been achieved. This study aims to enhance the understanding of gas production behavior through simulations from a single vertical well in the Nankai Trough and assess the effectiveness of the step-wise depressurization method for gas production using TOUGH + HYDRATE. The simulation results showed that the effective permeability for the water phase decreased as the hydrates were decomposed, and the invasion of the pore water from the underburden eliminated this effect. Compared with the direct depressurization method, the step-wise depressurization method significantly increased the cumulative gas production by more than 10% and mitigated the rapid generation of gas and water production during the moment of depressurization. The results also indicated that the depressurization gradient was more sensitive to the cumulative gas production than the maintenance time of depressurization. In view of the gas and water production characteristics coupled with the challenges in carrying out the step-wise depressurization method, it is suggested that a depressurization gradient of 1 MPa and a maintenance time of 1 day should be employed.

Abstract Background: The incidence rate of lung large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) in lung cancer is low, but the malignancy is high and the prognosis is poor. We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to determine the population distribution of organ metastasis in LCNEC, conduct survival analysis, judge prognostic factors, and provide direction for follow-up diagnosis and treatment.
Materials and methods: By logging into the SEER database, the data of lung LCNEC were retrieved and the target population was selected. According to the presence or absence of organ metastasis (bone, brain, liver, and lung), we divided the target population into the no organ metastasis group (n = 1,202) and the organ metastasis group (n = 870). By analyzing the clinicopathological data of patients and using the survival function, the corresponding median survival time was obtained, and the influencing factors of each group were analyzed. Then, the significant influencing factors were analyzed by multivariate Cox regression analysis to screen out the independent influencing factors.
Result: In the overall sample group, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that sex, age, primary site surgery, bone metastasis, brain metastasis, liver metastasis, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors. The 1-year survival rate was 13.8% in the bone metastasis group, 19.1% in the brain metastasis group, 13.8% in the liver metastasis group, and 20.3% in the intrapulmonary metastasis group. In the organ metastasis group, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that sex, chemotherapy, radiotherapy sequence with surgery, primary site surgery, liver metastasis, and age at diagnosis were independent factors affecting the prognosis.
Conclusion: In the overall sample of LCNEC, bone metastasis, brain metastasis, and liver metastasis all reduced the overall survival time, while the effect of intrapulmonary metastasis on the overall survival time was not statistically significant. Sex, chemotherapy, radiotherapy sequence with surgery, primary site surgery, liver metastasis, and age were independent factors affecting the prognosis of the LCNEC organ metastasis group. Women, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy sequence with surgery were favorable factors, while old age, liver metastasis, and male were unfavorable factors.

Abstract In this paper, self-healing microcapsules were prepared by using melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the wall material and shellac as the core material repairing agent. In order to explore the effect of the four factors (i.e., the HLB value of emulsifier, the type of solvent, the mass ratio of shellac to rosin, and the rate of rotating) on the comprehensive performance of microcapsules, and orthogonal experiments with four factors and three levels were carried out. The results showed that the hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) value of the emulsifier was the most important influencing factor. In order to further explore the relationship between the HLB value of the emulsifier and the morphology of the microcapsules and the coating rate as well as to further optimize the performance of the microcapsules, taking the HLB value of the emulsifier as the single factor variable, single-factor tests were carried out. The results showed that when the HLB value was 12.56, the microcapsules of melamine-formaldehyde resin-coated shellac-rosin mixture had a uniform distribution and high coating rate. In order to explore the self-healing properties of waterborne coatings with microcapsules, the microcapsules prepared by single-factor experiments were mixed into the waterborne coatings at mass ratios of 0%, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, 12.0%, and 15.0%. It showed that the elongation at break of the waterborne coating with the addition of 3.0% microcapsule at mass fraction was improved, and it had a higher repair rate. This study provides a new research idea for the optimization and characterization of the self-healing properties of waterborne coatings.

Abstract Medical image classification is a novel technology that presents a new challenge. It is essential that pathological images are automatically and correctly classified to enable doctors to provide precise treatment. Convolutional neural networks have demonstrated their effectiveness in classifying images in deep learning, which may have dozens or hundreds of layers, to illustrate the relationship between them in terms of their different neural network features. Convolutional layers consisting of small kernels take weights as input and guide them through an activation function as output. The main advantage of using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) instead of traditional neural networks is that they reduce the model parameters for greater accuracy. However, many studies have simply been focused on finding the best CNN model and classification results from a single medical image classification. Therefore, we applied a common deep learning network model in an attempt to identify the best model framework by training and validating different model parameters to classify medical images. After conducting experiments on six publicly available databases of pathological images, including colorectal cancer tissue, chest X-rays, common skin lesions, diabetic retinopathy, pediatric chest X-ray, and breast ultrasound image datasets, we were able to confirm that the recognition accuracy of the Inception V3 method was significantly better than that of other existing deep learning models.

Abstract Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials have potential advantages for spintronics due to their robustness, ultrafast dynamics, and magnetotransport effects. However, the missing spontaneous polarization and magnetization hinders the efficient utilization of electronic spin in these AFM materials. Here, we propose a simple way to produce spin-splitting in AFM materials by making the magnetic atoms with opposite spin polarization locating in the different environment (surrounding atomic arrangement), which does not necessarily require the presence of spin-orbital coupling. We confirm our proposal by four different types of two-dimensional AFM materials within the first-principles calculations. Our works provide an intuitional design principle to find or produce spin-splitting in AFM materials.
