Abstract A paucity of cognitive and affective features of empathy can be correlated with violent behavior. We aimed to identify differences in empathy among four groups in a sample of 100 male participants: (1) 27 violent offenders with schizophrenia, (2) 23 nonviolent patients with schizophrenia, (3) 25 patients with antisocial personality disorder, and (4) 25 subjects from the general population, who formed the control group. Schizophrenia symptoms were quantified with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Empathy was measured with the empathy quotient. Theory of mind was evaluated using (a) the first-order false-belief task, (b) the hinting task, (c) the faux pas recognition test and (d) the "reading the mind in the eyes" test (revised). Differences noted among the groups were age (controls were younger) and educational status (antisocials were less educated). The empathy quotient scoring (

Abstract Bartholin's glands are important organs of the female reproductive system. These glands have the function of producing an alkaline mucoid secretion, which helps in vaginal and vulvar lubrication. There are several types of lesions that can be identified in these anatomical structures, where in most cases presented for medical examination, cysts and abscesses predominate. This is the presentation of a clinical case of a 55-year-old patient, who is presented to the surgeon for her complaints. Once the woman is examined, diagnosed, and treated adequately, she is taken into consideration for presenting her case in this study, while maintaining confidentiality. The presented clinical case provides a clinical framework not easy to establish an accurate diagnosis of a Bartholin gland cyst. Careful physical examination by the surgeon and careful preparation with electrosurgery verified the cyst-hematoma left and just above the posterior fornix, where some material was taken from the cyst capsule and hematoma and sent for histological examination. The histological response concluded with cystic hematoma of the Bartholin gland. Cystic lesions of the vagina are relatively common and usually represent a benign condition. Ways of managing Bartholin gland cysts vary depending on the discomfort they bring to the patient as well as the size or even the anatomical extent of the cystic lesion. However, the physical examination, with a careful inspection by the surgeon, combined with the imaging examinations, requires a biopsy examination, which is the confirmation of the diagnosis.

Abstract The original English language Empathy Quotient (EQ) is a self-reporting questionnaire that measures the construct of empathy in adults of normal intelligence. The EQ is sensitive to gender, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The EQ has been translated to many languages all over the world. The EQ - Greek version may be available through open access from www.autismresearchcentre.com. Aim of the present study was to validate the EQ- Greek version. The study took place in the 1st and 2nd Departments of Psychiatry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), "Eginition" and "Attikon" Hospitals respectively, and in the Korydallos Prison Psychiatric Clinic in Athens. Two groups completed the original 60 items version. One group consisted of general population and volunteer students from post graduate training programs (normal control group, N= 127) and the other group of patients recruited from the Adult Neurodevelopmental Disorders Unit of the 1st Department of Psychiatry of NKUA, the outpatients' clinic of the 2nd Department of Psychiatry of NKUA and the Korydallos Prison Psychiatric Clinic (patient group, N=196). Three versions of the EQ were examined: the EQ-40, EQ-28 and EQ-15. All versions showed very good internal validity: Cronbach's a value was 0.902, 0.892 and 0.793 respectively. They all showed good test-retest variability: the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient was 0.928, 0.924 and 0.855 respectively. Concurrent validity examined by the correlation analysis with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) showed non-significant correlations between the EQ and the IRI. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) indicated a one-factor structure for the three versions. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for the one-factor structure showed a good fit for all the three versions. CFA for the three-factor structures (Cognitive Empathy, Emotional Empathy, Social Skills) showed also a good fit for EQ-28 and the EQ-15. When the EQ-40 was used as a measure of empathy in a single dimension in adults, the EQ discriminated the normal control group from the patients' group. The mean EQ score for the total sample was 35.84 with the lowest scoring being among Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) patients. As expected, females scored higher than males (p<0.001). To conclude, the Greek version of EQ showed good psychometric properties and could serve as a useful tool for clinicians to assess empathy in clinical populations and especially in subjects with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract Background: According to the literature, Cryoglobins, Cold Agglutinins, Donath-Landsteiner antibodies, and Cryofibrinogen arethe 4 types of Cold-Reactive proteins described.
Objective: The aim of the study was to show the role of these proteins cardiovascular surgery.
Case presentation: A 57-year-old male patient with a history of myocardial infarction 6 years ago, heavy smoker until 1 year ago, with diabetes, was admitted to the hospital for a surgical confrontation of coronary disease. He reports that for1-month symptoms are deteriorating (NYHA III). The history of the patient does not include either hematopoietic system or connective tissue diseases or recent viral infection. Angiographic control showed total obstruction of the small branch. The patient underwent median sternotomy. Suspension of the left sternum. Mobilization of the left internal mammary artery. Concomitant reception of left great saphenous vein. Intubation of ascending aorta and right atrium - vena cava with acatheter of two steps. He was extubated at the 10th post-surgical hour. Smooth post-surgical progression, with no signs of brain, myocardial or renal failure. The patient was discharged on the 5th post-surgical day.
Conclusion: Independently of the technique that is used, the systemic temperature must be maintained duringthe cardiopulmonary bypass above the temperature threshold activity of the cold-reactiveproteins.

Abstract The perioperative management of patients undergoing mediastinal mass operations presents a persistent challenge across multiple clinical specialties. General anesthesia administration further increases the risk of perioperative cardiorespiratory decompensation. The interdisciplinary team plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe perioperative period. However, due to the rarity and variability of mediastinal mass syndromes, specific management protocols are lacking. This review aims to outline the multitude of challenges and pitfalls encountered during perioperative management in patients with the mediastinal mass syndrome. We describe diagnostic evaluation, preoperative optimization, intraoperative considerations, and postoperative care strategies, emphasizing the paramount significance of a multidisciplinary approach and personalized treatment plans. Preoperative multidisciplinary discussions, meticulous anesthetic management, and well-established protocols for emergency situations are pivotal to ensuring patient safety. Healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with mediastinal mass syndrome must grasp these challenges and pitfalls, enabling them to deliver safe and effective perioperative management.

Abstract Choosing appropriate bypass conduits is important in the consideration of long-term outcomes after surgical revascularization. When deciding on a grafting strategy, attention should be given to technical, anatomic, and angiographic determinants of conduit properties, as well as the clinical characteristics of the patient. The aim of the study was to present a current review of available choices of conduits in coronary artery bypass surgery. To date, only 4 conduits have proven to be effective: the saphenous vein (SVG), the internal mammary arteries (IMAs), the radial artery (RA), and the right gastroepiploic artery (RGEA). The IMA has unique biological properties that confer protection to intimal growth and atherosclerotic plaque formation, making it the conduit of choice for coronary artery bypass grafting. SVG exhibits a lower patency rate than those of IMAs. The RGEA allows revascularization of the inferior wall but is less commonly used, given that it is more prone to spasms.

Abstract Gynecological cancer is among the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with malignancies of the ovary, uterus, fallopian tube, cervix, vagina, and vulva making up 10-18% of all cancers diagnosed in women globally. Gynecological cancer and atherosclerosis are two of the most frequent medical entities that afflict women worldwide; thus the possible correlations between them ought to be explored. Vulvar, cervical, vaginal, endometrial, and ovarian cancers have been found to have common points with atherosclerosis regarding their pathogenesis and predisposing factors. Obesity and metabolic syndrome, HPV infection, vitamin D deficiency, and increased telomere length constitute common ground between these two afflictions, which this article aims to analyze.

Abstract Introduction: Pancreaticoduodenectomy is a major procedure. Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) is a frequent postoperative complication that is attributed to several factors.
Aim: To investigate the probable association between perineural infiltrations and DGE, and the effects on overall survival.
Material and methods: A total of 123 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy were enrolled in the study. Factors like the presence of perineural infiltrations and post-operative DGE along with age, gender, presence of postoperative fistula, and grade of fistula and postoperative haemorrhage were analysed, and survival analyses were conducted.
Results: The presence of perineural infiltrations is statistically associated with DGE occurrence (
Conclusions: This is the first study that proves a statistically significant association between the presence of perineural infiltrations and the occurrence of DGE. Moreover, perineural infiltrations are an important independent prognostic factor for overall survival, along with other clinical factors.
