    Abstract The chloride penetration is usually modelled through the application of a solution of Fick's second law of diffusion, based on the assumption of semi-infinite boundary conditions. However, the presence of the bars, on whose surface the chlorides accumulate, makes this assumption incorrect. As the time progresses, the chlorides in the steel/concrete interface increase in concentration more than the chlorides overpassing the bar position without obstacles. This circumstance, although previously studied, has not been introduced in common practice, in spite of it supposes early reaching of the chloride threshold. The study in this paper shows a deterministic analysis of the chloride diffusion process by the finite element method (FEM) which numerically solves Fick's second law, taking into account the accumulation of the chlorides on the bar surface. Several examples are calculated and factors between the finite/semi-infinite solutions are given. These factors depend on the cover depth and the diffusion coefficient, and with less importance, on the diameter of the bar, which make it unfeasible to propose a general trend.

    Abstract Liquid marbles refer to droplets that are covered with a layer of non-wetting particles. They are observed in nature and have practical significance. These squishy objects bounce, coalesce, break, inflate, and deflate while the liquid does not touch the substrate underneath. Despite the considerable cross-disciplinary interest and value of the research on liquid marbles, a unified framework for describing the mechanics of deflating liquid marbles-as the liquid evaporates-is unavailable. For instance, analytical approaches for modeling the evaporation of liquid marbles exploit empirical parameters that are not based on liquid-particle and particle-particle interactions. Here, we have combined complementary experiments and theory to fill this gap. To unentangle the contributions of particle size, roughness, friction, and chemical make-up, we investigated the evaporation of liquid marbles formed with particles of sizes varying over 7 nm-300 μm and chemical compositions ranging from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic. We demonstrate that the potential final states of evaporating liquid marbles are characterized by one of the following: (I) constant surface area, (II) particle ejection, or (III) multilayering. Based on these insights, we developed an evaporation model for liquid marbles that takes into account their time-dependent shape evolution. The model fits are in excellent agreement with our experimental results. Furthermore, this model and the general framework can provide mechanistic insights into extant literature on the evaporation of liquid marbles. Altogether, these findings advance our fundamental understanding of liquid marbles and should contribute to the rational development of technologies.

    Title translation Validation of the European Portuguese Version of a Pediatric Palliative Needs Assessment Tool: The Pediatric Palliative Screening Scale.
    Abstract Introduction: The Pediatric Palliative Screening Scale (PaPaS Scale) was designed to help professionals to identify life-limiting or life-threatening children/young people with complex chronic conditions who would benefit from pediatric palliative care and facilitate their timely and appropriate referral. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt and validate the PaPaS Scale for the Portuguese pediatric population.
    Material and methods: A quantitative methodological study involving translation, cultural adaptation and validation of a scale was performed. In the first phase, the translation and cultural adaptation of the original version of the PaPaS Scale from English to European Portuguese was undertaken. The second phase consisted of evaluating the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the PaPaS Scale.
    Results: Fifty-one enquires pertaining to children/young adults with complex chronic conditions were completed and returned, the sum of the responses to the items on the scale revealed that 84.4% of the patients had an indication for referral to pediatric palliative care. The internal consistency analysis obtained a value of Cronbach's alpha above 0.80, so the scale was considered adequate for the analyzed data. In our sample, the item-total correlation values indicated that the 11 variables measured the PaPaS Scale with good reliability and unidimensionally. The confirmatory factor analysis suggested that the items were significant, consistent, and presented convergent validity globally. Only item "2.2. Treatment side effects" obtained a value below the defined threshold.
    Conclusion: The PaPaS Scale was translated and adapted to the European Portuguese version, allowing its immediate use in the Portuguese population. It will be essential to design multicentric studies to expand the knowledge about the psychometric characteristics of this scale.

    Abstract This study analyzed the relationship between clinical and demographic variables, family support, school support, and adherence on adolescents' metabolic control and quality of life (QoL) based on Adaptation to Chronic Disease in Childhood's model. The sample included 100 adolescents and 100 parents. Adolescents were assessed on adherence, family support, school support, and QoL. Parents were assessed on family functioning and parental coping. A path analysis was performed to assess the adequacy of the theoretical model to the sample. Daily glycemic monitoring was associated with better metabolic control and diabetes hospitalizations with worse metabolic control. The final model showed adherence, family support, school support, and family functioning having an indirect effect on the relationship between adolescence stage, number of daily glycemic monitorings, number of hospitalizations, and metabolic control/QoL. Adherence had an indirect effect on the relationship between glycemic monitoring and family and school support, suggesting that adolescents need both types of support to perform diabetes self-care tasks. QoL showed a direct effect on metabolic control revealing the importance of QoL in the design of interventions to promote metabolic control in adolescents.

    Abstract Planetary protection is a principle in the design of interplanetary missions that aims to prevent biological cross contamination between the target body and Earth. Planetary protection policies and procedures have worked to mitigate forward contamination (from Earth) and back contamination (to Earth) since the beginning of the space age. Today, planetary protection policy is guided by international agreements, nongovernmental advisory councils, and national space agencies. The landscape of planetary protection science and policy is changing rapidly, as new technologies, crewed missions to Mars and the Moon, and even orbital settlements are being developed. Space exploration, whether specifically targeted toward questions in astrobiology or not, must consider planetary protection concerns to minimize contamination that poses a risk to both astrobiological investigations as well as Earth's biosphere. In this chapter, we provide an introduction to and overview of the history, motivations, and implementation of planetary protection in the United States.

    Abstract Oil hydrolysis is an important industrial process that requires high temperatures and pressure, or expensive enzymatic catalysts; it is, therefore, necessary to seek the use of inexpensive raw materials and process enhancement. In this work, a rapid and eco-friendly method, using ultrasound power, was successfully employed to hydrolyze crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst.) oil using lipase enzymes directly from castor (Ricinus communis L.) seeds, in oil-free and fresh forms. A yield of 86 % conversion of triglycerides into free fatty acids (FFA) was achieved in 5 min using castor fresh seeds and 73 % of conversion when performing the reaction with oil-free seeds. The operational conditions of ultrasound power, mass ratio of buffer solution and oil, catalyst, and total substrate were evaluated using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The hydrolysis yield was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum conditions were approximately 70 % of ultrasound power (350 W), 1.79 buffer solution/oil mass ratio, and 0.25 catalyst/substrate mass ratio for fresh seeds. For the oil-free seeds, the optimal conditions found were 68 % (340 W) of ultrasound power, 1.67 buffer solution/oil mass ratio, and 0.06 catalyst/substrate mass ratio. Mathematical modeling was applied to the experimental kinetic data, and it was possible to predict FFA concentration values from independent experiments.

    Abstract Introduction: Intrauterine growth impairment is associated with long-term metabolic changes (perinatal programming). We recently demonstrated that antenatal betamethasone (BET) decreased head circumference in term born females. Since glucose is the main energy source for fetal growth, BET-induced changes in maternal glucose homeostasis, a reduced transplacental glucose transfer or an altered fetal glucose utilization may be linked with the observed growth impairment.
    Methods: 86 pregnant women exposed to BET (single course, <34 + 0 weeks of gestation (wks)) were compared to 92 gestational-age/sex-matched controls. Glucose, insulin, leptin, insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2) and their binding proteins (IGFBP-1, IGFBP-3) were measured in maternal and umbilical cord blood samples. Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA-IR) was calculated. Placental glucose transporter 1 and 3 (GLUT1, GLUT3) protein levels were determined. Statistics were performed for overall and subgroup analysis (gestational age, sex).
    Results: After BET maternal HOMA-IR was elevated, IGFBP-1 reduced. In female pregnancies, glucose levels ≥37 + 0 wks and IGF-1 levels <37 + 0 wks were tendentially increased. Placental GLUT1 and GLUT3 protein levels were not significantly altered. Fetal umbilical venous glucose levels ≥37 + 0 wks were increased. HOMA-IR tended to be elevated in females.
    Discussion: Growth impairment after BET appears neither caused by maternal nor fetal hypoglycemia nor changes of GLUT1 and GLUT3 total protein levels. Nonetheless, glucose homeostasis of mothers and daughters was altered even beyond the BET time frame (hyperglycemia, enhanced insulin resistance). Despite glucose supply was sufficient, an anabolic effect was apparently absent. Overall, our results highlight the relevance of adequate glucose management after BET and peripartum.

    Abstract Speed is an essential skill in sports performance and an important performance metric in talent identification. This study aims to evaluate and compare the sprint acceleration characteristics across different age groups in an elite soccer academy. A total of 141 elite academy soccer players were recruited to participate in the study, and they were assigned to their respective competitive age groups, ranging from under-14 to the B-team.
