Abstract Objective: This study aimed to verify the presence of polymorphism rs2165241 of the lysyl oxidase-like 1 (
Methods: The study was previously approved by the local research and ethics board. Postmenopausal women were included and divided into POP (stages III and IV) and control (stages 0 and I) groups. Peripheral blood samples were collected, and the DNA sequence of interest was analyzed by real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. We used logistic regression and considered a recessive model of inheritance for the analysis, with
Results: A total of 836 women were assessed: 426 POP cases and 410 controls. The frequencies of CC, CT and TT genotypes were similar in both groups. Age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07; 1.14), number of vaginal births (OR = 17.06, 95% CI = 5.94; 48.97), family history (OR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.57; 5.22) and weight of largest newborn (OR = 1.001, 95% CI = 1.0003; 1.001) were independent risk factors for POP, while multiple cesarean sections (two or more) was protective (OR = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.07; 0.42).
Conclusion: No association was detected between rs2165241 of the

Abstract Immature inflorescences of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) var. Pisifera were inoculated onto modified MS medium containing 0.3% (w/v) activated charcoal and 475 μM 2,4-D. After 2-3 months of culture, a hard yellow callus proliferated at the base of the shoot-like structures. The high incidence of phenolic oxidation required the use of increased levels of activated charcoal (0.5% w/v) and 2,4-D (500 μM). Development of floral structures from inflorescence expiants was frequently observed during the culture period. After 81 weeks of culture, an embryogenic tissue characterized by compact consistency and pearly white color was observed in tissues derived from very young inflorescences. This compact embryogenic tissue differentiated into normal somatic embryos when transferred onto regeneration medium containing NAA (15 μM) and ABA (2 μM). Normal plantlets were recovered from these somatic embryos after 8 weeks on regeneration medium.

Abstract In June 5–9, 2017, during the United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference, 143 governments, signatory parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) declared their commitment and strategies to reach several objectives of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, which stands to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”. In a relatively short time frame, the parties have committed to develop marine spatial planning, enforce sustainable management and protection of marine ecosystems, conserve at least 10% of the world's marine habitats, end overfishing, provide access for small-scale fishers, reduce marine pollution and ocean acidification, among others ambitious goals. The ocean has been included in the Paris Agreement, the subsequent Global Climate Action Agenda in 2015, and the 23rd Conference of the Parties of the UN (COP23), held in November 2017, which has assessed the global progress toward the SDG14, organizing several action plans. The UN seems optimistic with the progress achieved towards SDG 14, suggesting that overfishing has slowed down in the past 10 years and that over 8.4% of the world's exclusive economic zones are under protection. However, only a small fraction of that is under strong protection and many priority areas are still unprotected. In addition, major challenges presented by signatory governments are slowing down or compromising the achievement of the 14 SDG targets. Despite the challenges, we envision hope towards the sustainability of the world's marine biodiversity, where managers, scientists, and stakeholders work together to defend biodiversity, ecosystem services, and resources that the world depends on.
