Abstract Introduction: 3D models are an emerging tool for surgical planning, providing an augmented method for the visualisation of a patient's anatomy. As their use increases, more data about the utility of these models is critical to inform budget allocation. This study provides the most comprehensive analysis to date for the use of 3D models in perioperative management.
Methods: 3D models for complex surgical cases in NHS hospitals were delivered alongside a surgeon feedback survey. The survey on the model's utility had been designed alongside the university data analytical team and focused on five areas: surgical planning and diagnosis, economic impact, impact on intraoperative and preoperative time, effect on communication and direct impact on the patient.
Results: There were 106 models used by 63 surgeons for complex surgical cases between May 2020 and March 2021, across multiple surgical specialties. The models were reported to have benefits in all perioperative areas, with 92.5% of responses agreeing that the 3D model was a better method for diagnosis and planning than traditional 2D techniques. Benefits were reported on preoperative planning (92.4%), economic savings due to equipment selection (54.4%), reduction in surgical time (41.5%) and surgeon-to-surgeon communication (92.6%).
Conclusion: 3D models were shown to have a wide range of benefits in a surgical setting. The reduction in surgical time could have the potential to help alleviate surgical backlogs. With more widespread use and optimisation of costs the use of 3D models could become the standard for unusual and complex surgical cases.

Abstract Next generation sequencing technologies have facilitated a shift from a few targeted loci in population genetic studies to whole genome approaches. Here, we review the types of questions and inferences regarding the population biology and evolution of parasitic helminths being addressed within the field of population genomics. Topics include parabiome, hybridization, population structure, loci under selection and linkage mapping. We highlight various advances, and note the current trends in the field, particularly a focus on human-related parasites despite the inherent biodiversity of helminth species. We conclude by advocating for a broader application of population genomics to reflect the taxonomic and life history breadth displayed by helminth parasites. As such, our basic knowledge about helminth population biology and evolution would be enhanced while the diversity of helminths in itself would facilitate population genomic comparative studies to address broader ecological and evolutionary concepts.

Abstract We describe a student-centered, hands-on conservational program designed to alter adolescent environmental values and cognitive knowledge. The values (defined as sets of attitudes towards nature conservation) were measured using the 2-MEV scale (Two Major Environmental Values: Preservation, Utilization). Pre-existing knowledge levels and subsequent cognitive learning (short-, medium- and long-term) were scored on the basis of the three knowledge dimensions (system knowledge: Sys, action-related knowledge: Act and effectiveness knowledge: Eff). Two hundred and seventy-one 6th to 8th graders, unaware of the testing schedules, completed our questionnaires two weeks before (T0), immediately after (T1), six weeks after (T2) and six months (T3) after participation in our nature and wildlife conservation program module. The linear mixed effects model (LMM) was used to analyze the relationships of cognitive knowledge with Preservation and Utilization: high Preservation scores predicted high overall pre-knowledge for all three knowledge types. High Utilization scores correlated with low pre-knowledge scores for all knowledge types. For Preservation, this positive relationship remained constant at all testing schedules. Utilization and knowledge acquisition correlated negatively in both the short (six weeks) and long terms (six months). Students scoring high on Preservation knew more, learned more, and forgot less in the short term than the low scorers. Students scoring high on Utilization briefly added cognitive knowledge immediately after the intervention, though this disappeared again in the short term. Educators are advised to build upon existing values and adjust their teaching on nature conservation issues accordingly.

Abstract Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a human carcinogen that is commonly found in landfill leachate. Contaminated leachate plumes may be intercepted prior to reaching groundwater and treated in situ using permeable reactive barriers (PRB). This study used a packed column system containing herbal pomace and spruce biochar, previously shown to have TCE adsorptive capabilities. Influent containing raw or autoclaved landfill leachate was used to investigate the potential for environmental micro-organisms to establish a TCE-dechlorinating biofilm on the biochar, in order to prolong the operational life span of the system. TCE removal ≥ 99.7 % was observed by both biochars. No dichloroethylene (DCE) isomers were present in the column effluents, but cis-1,2 DCE was adsorbed to the biochar treating raw landfill leachate, indicating that dechlorination was occurring biologically in these columns. Known microbial species that are individually capable of complete dechlorination of TCE to ethene were not detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, but several species capable of partial TCE dechlorination (Desulfitobacterium spp., Sulfurospirillium spp. and Desulfuromonas spp) were present in the biofilms of the columns treating raw landfill leachate. These data demonstrate that biochar from waste material may be capable of supporting a dechlorinating biofilm to promote bioremediation of TCE.
