    Abstract Recent increase in awareness of the extent of microplastic contamination in marine and freshwater systems has heightened concerns over the ecological and human health risks of this ubiquitous material. Assessing risks posed by microplastic in freshwater systems requires sampling to establish contamination levels, but standard sampling protocols have yet to be established. An important question is whether sampling and assessment should focus on microplastic concentrations in the water or the amount deposited on the bed. On three dates, five replicated water and bed sediment samples were collected from each of the eight sites along the upper reach of the Semenyih River, Malaysia. Microplastics were found in all 160 samples, with mean concentrations of 3.12 ± 2.49 particles/L in river water and 6027.39 ± 16,585.87 particles/m

    Abstract This research was aimed o investigate the application value and diagnostic effect of dark-lumen magnetic resonance imaging (dark-lumen MRI) based on artificial intelligence algorithm on colon cancer. A total of 98 patients with ulcerated colon cancer were selected as the study subjects. All patients underwent colonic endoscopy. The patients were divided into algorithm group (artificial intelligence algorithm processing image group) and control group (conventional method processing image group) according to different dark-lumen MRI processing methods. The detection efficiency of colon cancer was compared between the two groups. It showed that the diagnostic effect of dark-lumen MRI based on artificial intelligence algorithm was significant. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in the control group was 0.92 ± 0.14 mm2/s (minimum: 0.74, maximum: 1.30), ADC in the algorithm group was 1.55 ± 0.31 mm2/s (minimum: 1.22, maximum: 2.42). The ADC of patients in algorithm group was significantly higher than that of patients in control group, with statistical difference (t = 7.827, P < 0.001). The correct number of cases was 46 and the diagnostic error number was 3 in algorithm group, with accuracy of 93%. The correct number of cases was 41 and the diagnostic error number was 8 in control group, with accuracy of 83%. In comparison, the correct rate was 10% higher in algorithm group, indicating that the diagnostic effect was better in algorithm group. The mean value of invasion depth was 10.42 in the algorithm group and 5.27 in the control group, indicating that the algorithm group was more accurate in the judgment of invasion depth, had a good prospect of clinical application, and had guiding significance for the diagnosis of colon cancer.

    Abstract Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of community pharmacists (CP) towards household pharmaceutical waste disposal.
    Methods: All pharmacists attending the Malaysian Community Pharmacy Guild event held in-person were invited to self-administer a web-based survey.
    Key findings: The response rate was 61% (168/276). Overall, community pharmacists have mixed knowledge (mean ± SD: 5.89 ± 1.38) and positive attitude (mean ± SD: 9.58 ± 0.81) towards household pharmaceutical waste disposal. However, few community pharmacists (18/168, 10.7%) have promotional materials encouraging safe medication disposal in their pharmacies.
    Conclusions: Community pharmacists do not proactively promote safe household pharmaceutical waste disposal to mitigate pharmaceutical pollutants entering the environment although they have satisfactory knowledge and attitude.

    Abstract Recent increase in awareness of the extent of microplastic contamination in marine and freshwater systems has heightened concerns over the ecological and human health risks of this ubiquitous material. Assessing risks posed by microplastic in freshwater systems requires sampling to establish contamination levels, but standard sampling protocols have yet to be established. An important question is whether sampling and assessment should focus on microplastic concentrations in the water or the amount deposited on the bed. On three dates, five replicated water and bed sediment samples were collected from each of the eight sites along the upper reach of the Semenyih River, Malaysia. Microplastics were found in all 160 samples, with mean concentrations of 3.12 ± 2.49 particles/L in river water and 6027.39 ± 16,585.87 particles/m² deposited on the surface of riverbed sediments. Fibres were the dominant type of microplastic in all samples, but fragments made up a greater proportion of the material on the bed than in the water. Within-site variability in microplastic abundance was high for both water and bed sediments, and very often greater than between-site variability. Patterns suggest that microplastic accumulation on the bed is spatially variable, and single samples are therefore inadequate for assessing bed contamination levels at a site. Sites with the highest mean concentrations in samples of water were not those with the highest concentrations on the bed, indicating that monitoring based only on water samples may not provide a good picture of either relative or absolute bed contamination levels, nor the risks posed to benthic organisms.

    Abstract The discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used extensively for the numerical simulation of gas-solid fluidized beds. In order to improve the efficiency of this approach, a coarse grain model of the DEM was proposed in the literature. In this model, a group of original particles are treated as a large-sized particle based on the initial particle distribution, and during the whole simulation process the number and components of these particle-groups remain unchanged. However, collisions between particles can lead to frequent crushing and polymerization of particle-groups. This fact has typically been ignored, so the purpose of this paper is to rationalize the coarse grain DEM-CFD model by considering the dynamic particle-group crushing and polymerization. In particular, the effective size of each particle-group is measured by a quantity called equivalent particle-group diameter, whose definition references the equivalent cluster diameter used by the energy-minimization multi-scale (EMMS) model. Then a particle-group crushing criterion is presented based on the mismatch between the equivalent diameter and actual diameter of a particle-group. As to the polymerization of two colliding particle-groups, their velocity difference after collision is chosen as a criterion. Moreover, considering the flow heterogeneity induced by the particle cluster formation, the EMMS drag force model is adopted in this work. Simulations are carried out by using a finite volume method (FVM) with non-staggered grids. For decoupling the Navier-Stokes equations, the semi-implicit method for pressure linked equations revised (SIMPLER) algorithm is used. The simulation results show that the proposed dynamic coarse grain DEM-CFD method has better performance than the original one.

    Abstract Plastics are synthetic polymers known for their outstanding durability and versatility, and have replaced traditional materials in many applications. Unfortunately, their unique traits ensure that they pose a major threat to the environment. While literature on freshwater microplastic contamination has grown over the recent years, research undertaken in rapidly developing countries, where plastic production and use are increasing dramatically, has lagged behind that in other parts of the world. In the South East Asia (SEA) region, basic information on levels of contamination is very limited and, as a consequence, the risk to human and ecological health remains hard to assess. This review synthesises what is currently known about microplastic contamination of freshwater ecosystems in SEA, with a particular focus on Malaysia. The review 1) summarises published studies that have assessed levels of contamination in freshwater systems in SEA, 2) discusses key sources and transport pathways of microplastic in freshwaters, 3) outlines what is known of the impacts of microplastic on freshwater organisms, and 4) identifies key knowledge gaps related to our understanding of the transport, fate and effects of microplastic.

    Abstract Background The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is controversial. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between SUA and all-cause and CVD mortality in PD patients. Method Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed and the Cochrane Library databases were searched from their inception to 7 April 2021. Effect estimates were presented as hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) and pooled using random effects model. Result Thirteen cohort studies with 22418 patients were included in this systematic review, of which 9 were included in the meta-analysis. Before switching the reference group, pooled result for the highest SUA category was significantly greater than the median for all-cause mortality (HR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.37-4.26). After switching the reference group, the highest SUA category did not demonstrate an increased all-cause (HR = 1.40, 95% CI: 0.95-2.05) or CVD (HR = 1.30, 95% CI: 0.72-2.34) mortality compared with the lowest SUA category. Dose-response analysis suggested a nonlinear association between SUA and all-cause mortality risk (Pnonlinearity = 0.002). Conclusion This meta-analysis didn't find the relationship between SUA levels and all-cause and CVD mortality risk in PD patients. More rigorously designed studies are warranted in the future.
