Abstract Fiber and fiber-rich foods have been inversely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the evidence is scarce in young and Mediterranean cohorts. We used Cox regression models to assess the association between quintiles of total fiber and fiber from different sources, and the risk of CVD adjusted for the principal confounding factors in a Mediterranean cohort of young adults, the SUN (Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra, Follow-up) cohort. After a median follow-up of 10.3 years, we observed 112 cases of CVD among 17,007 participants (61% female, mean age 38 years). We observed an inverse association between fiber intake and CVD events (p for trend = 0.024) and also between the highest quintile of fruit consumption (hazard ratio (HR) 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.27–0.95) or whole grains consumption (HR 0.43 95% CI 0.20–0.93) and CVD compared to the lowest quintile, and also a HR of 0.58 (95% CI 0.37–0.90) for the participants who ate at least 175 g/day of fruit. Only the participants in the highest quintile of fruit-derived fiber intake had a significantly lower risk of CVD (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.28–0.97). The participants who ate at least one serving per week of cruciferous vegetables had a lower risk than those who did not (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.30–0.89). In conclusion, high fruit consumption, whole grain consumption, or consumption of at least one serving/week of cruciferous vegetables may be protective against CVD in young Mediterranean populations.

Abstract Purpose of review: The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the role of novel lipid biomarkers from the circulating lipidome in inflammatory processes and the impact that dietary patterns may have on the lipidome.
Recent findings: Inflammation is a process that underlies many acute and chronic diseases, contributing to their development and severity. Finding novel molecules which serve as biomarkers and which are involved in inflammation is very useful, since they offer us both preventive or therapeutic targets and reveal mechanisms of action. Recently, several studies have found circulating lipid molecules that are implicated in inflammatory processes of different diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, COVID-19 or other respiratory infectious diseases. As such, ceramides, triacylglicerides or lysophosphatidylcholines have been associated with inflammation in a different manner depending on the stage of inflammation. The study of dietary patterns, especially healthy ones as the Mediterranean or the Nordic diets, has shown the impact that dietary habits may have on the lipidomic profile of individuals.
Conclusions: Healthy dietary patterns have been suggested to exert beneficial effects in the circulating lipid profile. Studying the circulating lipidome could help to find new biomarkers of underlying inflammation, especially in cases of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases in which it is more difficult to detect.

Abstract Introduction: Adolescent health is currently undergoing a serious deterioration. The aim of this study was to identify the self-care practices in adolescents between 15 and 18 years of age attending secondary schools in four departments of the interior of the province of La Rioja, Argentina.
Methodology: descriptive cross-sectional and analytical study; data collected between October and November 2022 by non-probabilistic convenience sampling, with analysis of absolute and relative frequencies, multivariate logistic regression analysis and Odds ratio with 95% CI statistical significance of p= ˂0.05. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using the Principal Components method as extraction and the Orthogonal Varimax method as rotation. Analysis software, SPSS version 26.
Results: There are discordances between the self-perception of health care and the practice carried out by the adolescents. Gender disparity in self-care is identified. The factors that increase self-care are the use of digital health applications, annual or shorter medical check-ups, and maintaining positive thinking habits. The main concern in relation to self-care among adolescents was the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Abstract Through the analysis of the corresponding Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for five wind projects set up on the Yucatan coast, in Mexico, this work seeks to draw attention to the environmental controversies that these projects generate. To carry out our analysis, we resorted to three sources of information that are part of the EIA process: (i) the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), presented by private companies, for these wind farms; (ii) observations and criticisms of the EIS, presented by the civil society during the public process to which the EIS is submitted; and (iii) the rulings emitted by the federal environmental authorities. This documentation was complemented by participation in a number of forums and some interviews. Based on this analysis, we defined a series of deficiencies in the EIA process. Accordingly, we can affirm that in Mexico, as in other countries, there is no wind energy plan capable of reconciling energy objectives with nature conservation. Renewable energy projects in Mexico have been designed solely based on the distribution of wind or solar resources, completely ignoring environmental or social issues. In this regard, a sustainable energy transition requires strengthening the environmental management capabilities of governments, and the application of mechanisms that will allow the integration of environmental variables in the early stages of decision making, using instruments such as the Strategic Environmental Assessment.

Abstract Respiratory RNA viruses are a major cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections and contribute substantially to hospitalization among infants, elderly, and immunocompromised. Complete viral clearance from acute infections is not always achieved, leading to persistence. Certain chronic respiratory diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been associated with persistent infection by human respiratory syncytial virus and human rhinovirus, but it is still not clear whether RNA viruses really establish long-term infections as it has been recognized for DNA viruses as human bocavirus and adenoviruses. Herein, we summarize evidence of RNA virus persistence in the human respiratory tract, as well as in some animal models, to highlight how long-term infections might be related to development and/or maintenance of chronic respiratory symptoms.

Abstract We introduce a novel approach for colloidal lithography based on the dry particle assembly into a dense monolayer on an elastomer, followed by mechanical transfer to a substrate of any material and curvature. This method can be implemented either manually or automatically and it produces large area patterns with the quality obtained by the state-of-the-art colloidal lithography at a very high throughput. We first demonstrated the fabrication of nanopatterns with a periodicity ranging between 200 nm and 2 μm. We then demonstrated two nanotechnological applications of this approach. The first one is antireflective structures, fabricated on silicon and sapphire, with different geometries including arrays of bumps and holes and adjusted for different spectral ranges. The second one is smart 3D nanostructures for mechanostimulation of T cells that are used for their effective proliferation, with potential application in cancer immunotherapy. This new approach unleashes the potential of bottom-up nanofabrication and paves the way for nanoscale devices and systems in numerous applications.

Abstract Macauba palm fruits (Acrocomia aculeata and Acrocomia totai) are emerging as sources of high-quality oils from their pulp and kernels. The protein-rich macauba kernel meal (MKM) left after oil extraction remains undervalued, mainly due to the lack of suitable deoiling parameters and integrated protein recovery methods. Therefore, the present study aimed to produce protein concentrates from MKM using sieve fractionation. The deoiling parameters, comprising pressing, milling, and solvent extraction, were improved in terms of MKM functionality. The combination of hydraulic pressing, milling to 1 mm, and the hexane extraction of A. aculeata kernels resulted in MKM with the highest protein solubility (77.1%), emulsifying activity index (181 m2/g protein), and emulsion stability (149 min). After sieve fractionation (cut size of 62 µm), this meal yielded a protein concentrate with a protein content of 65.6%, representing a 74.1% protein enrichment compared to the initial MKM. This protein concentrate showed a reduced gelling concentration from 8 to 6%, and an increased emulsion stability from 149 to 345 min, in comparison to the MKM before sieving. Therefore, sieve fractionation after improved deoiling allows for the simple, cheap, and environmentally friendly recovery of MKM proteins, highlighting the potential of macauba kernels as a new source of protein.

Abstract Objective: To study the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and all-cause mortality in a healthy middle-aged Mediterranean cohort.
Methods: We included 15,390 participants -mean age 42.8 years at first HRQoL ascertainment, all university graduates-. HRQoL was assessed with the self-administered Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36) twice, with a 4-year gap. We used multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models to address the relation between self-reported health and Physical or Mental Component Summary (PCS-36 or MCS-36) and mortality, and their interaction with prior comorbidities or adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet).
Results: Over 8.7 years of median follow-up time, 266 deaths were identified. Hazard ratio (HR) for the excellent vs. poor/fair category in self-reported health was 0.30 (95 % confidence interval (CI), 0.16-0.57) in the model with repeated measurements of HRQoL. Both the PCS-36 (HR
Conclusions: Self-reported HRQoL -assessed as self-reported health, PCS-36 and MCS-36- obtained with the Spanish version of the SF-36 were inversely associated with mortality risk, regardless of the presence of previous comorbidities or adherence to the MedDiet.
