Abstract “This collection of studies fills a glaring gap in research on climate justice in that richly diverse social-ecological landscape that has come to be called the Global South. While acknowledging the stark and inequitable realities of climate vulnerability across countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, the authors nonetheless highlight the tremendous capacities for agency among local communities, organizations, and peoples.” — Debra J. Davidson, Professor, Environmental Sociology, Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology, University of Alberta, Canada. This book provides an accessible overview of how efforts to combat climate change and social inequalities should be tackled simultaneously. In the context of the climate emergency, the impacts of extreme events can already be felt around the world. The book centres on five case studies from the Global South, Latin America, Pacific Islands, Africa, and Asia with each one focused on climate justice, resilience, and community responses towards a just transition. The book will be an invaluable reference for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in environmental studies, urban planning, geography, social science, international development, and disciplines that focus on the social dimensions of climate change. Pedro Henrique Campello Torres is a Researcher at the Institute of Energy and Environment, University of São Paulo, Brazil. He is currently a Research Fellow of the Earth System Project and IPCC Expert Review. His research focuses on climate change inequalities, climate and environmental justice with a particular emphasis on urban planning, decoloniality and participatory approaches. Pedro Roberto Jacobi is Full Professor in Institute of Energy and Environment, and coordinates the Environment and Society working group at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Professor Jacobi is currently President of the Board of ICLEI South America and integrates the Advisory Board of the South American Institute for Resilience and Sustainability Studies. His research centres on social learning and environmental governance focusing on issues related to water and solid waste management.

Abstract The design and deployment of green amenities is a way to tackle cities' socio-environmental problems in the quest for urban sustainability. In this study, we undertake a systematic review of research published in international peer-reviewed journals that analyzes environmental justice issues within the context of the deployment of urban green amenities. Since most studies focus on the Global North, where this scholarship first emerged, our goal is to link the literature focused on the North and the South. This study aims to outline similarities and differences regarding the nexus of justice and the greening of cities in both contexts as well as to identify knowledge gaps in this scholarship in the Global South. “Green infrastructure” and “nature-based solutions,” as the leading concepts for cities' greening agendas, are used as descriptors in combination with “justice” and/or “green gentrification” in searches undertaken of two bibliographic databases. Our results show there is a need to better delineate a research agenda that addresses such issues in a heterogeneous Global South context while gaining insights from advances made by research on the Global North.

Abstract The concept of green gentrification has gained strength in studies from the United States and Europe, especially those related to urban parks and green infrastructure. In Latin America, the use of the concept is still restricted. This study assesses whether the concept coined in the Global North can be applied to the context of the most urbanized Global South region and reflects on the uses, possibilities and limitations of this concept, particularly in the case of Brazil. Three illustrative cases in Brazil were chosen to discuss and test the green gentrification concept in the light of whether mediation was required, based on local realities and experiences. Our findings demonstrate that the concept offers insight into the processes observed simultaneously assuming new contours when applied to a southern reality. From a critical perspective, this article shows the need to politicize the relationship between nature and the capitalist production of space in Latin America.

Abstract Within the context of climate change and the quest for more sustainable cities, greener urban solutions are gaining traction through emerging concepts that have been orienting municipalities’ regeneration and development agendas, including the so-called nature-based solutions (NbS), which have been discussed, planned, and proposed worldwide by academics, NGOs, and policymakers. Comprising different scales and typologies, NbS makes up a modern toolkit of actions towards decarbonized, climate-resilient, and ecologically healthy cities, claiming ample ecological, social, and economic benefits. A literature analysis indicates a greater presence of research and projects focused on NbS in countries in the Global North than in the South; however, given their accelerated urban growth, lack of green areas, and degradation of local environments, cities of the South urgently need such solutions. Nonetheless, research on the effects of urban greening agendas in the Global North has demonstrated that solutions may be entangled with neoliberal practices of space production that exacerbate inequalities, resulting in harmful social impacts such as displacement of people and increases in land and housing costs. This study seeks to build an anticipatory understanding of practices that articulate NbS in the Global South from a Brazilian viewpoint. Given Brazil's reality of social and environmental injustices, we focus on whether implementing NbS could amplify such problems. Our objective is to contribute to the debate by (1) understanding how the NbS concept is being appropriated, in practice, in Brazil, and (2) reflecting and pointing out paths and recommendations on how to plan NbS through a justice lens.
