Abstract Background: The gut microbiota is a key determinant of long-term health. Promoting maternal health literacy may enhance children well-being. Aim of the present study was to assess gut microbiota-related health literacy of Italian women and identify potential gaps in awareness.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted using an online questionnaire (17 questions) on determinants and long-term impact of infant gut microbiota. The survey targeted Italian pregnant women and mothers of children under 2 years old, and was distributed through various social media channels between September 28th and November 15th, 2022. A total score was calculated as the sum of positive answers. Data on demographics, pregnancy status, and pre-existing knowledge of the infant gut microbiota were also collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied.
Results: The questionnaire was completed by 1076 women. Median total score was 9 [7-11]. The 81.7% of respondents declared prior knowledge of the gut microbiota. The internet was among the most commonly cited primary sources of information. Independent predictors of total score were having a university degree (B = 0.656, p = 0.002) and prior knowledge (B = 2.246, p < 0.001). Conversely, older age was associated with lower total scores (B = -0.092, p < 0.001). The least known determinants of infant gut microbiota were gestational BMI, prematurity, mode of delivery and NICU stay. Pregnant women failed to recognize the role of breastfeeding in the development of infant gut microbiota more frequently than non-pregnant women. The 97.5% of participants reported increased interest in the gut microbiota, with heightened interest associated with prior knowledge.
Conclusions: Our study revealed a moderate level of knowledge about infant gut microbiota among respondents, emphasizing the positive impact of prior knowledge on understanding and interest. Targeted educational interventions are needed to address awareness gaps, especially concerning the influence of breastfeeding on infant gut microbiota. Healthcare providers have the potential to enhance women's knowledge and awareness of this topic.

Abstract Tracheal diverticulum is defined as an air cyst located on the lateral wall, congenital or acquired. Most of them are asymptomatic, incidentally found on CT. The common symptoms are chronic cough, stridor, or recurrent respiratory infections. Asymptomatic diverticulum requires no treatment and managed conservatively while surgical excision is indicated in cases of local complications or symptom permanence. We report a case of tracheal diverticulum presented with haemoptysis, a rare symptom. The diagnosis was made with a CT that shows a 15 mm air image on the right lateral trachea wall. Due to symptoms' persistence, we decide to perform surgery with a good outcome.

Abstract Background: The elevation of endocannabinoid levels through inhibiting their degradation afforded neuroprotection in CaMKIIα-TDP-43 mice, a conditional transgenic model of frontotemporal dementia. However, which cannabinoid receptors are mediating these benefits is still pending to be elucidated.
Methods: We have investigated the involvement of the CB
Results: Our results confirmed the therapeutic value of activating either the CB
Conclusions: These data reinforce the notion that the activation of CB

Abstract Bullet embolism is an uncommon complication from heart gunshot injuries because most of the patients die immediately after trauma. The low frequency of this complication combined with the possible absence of symptoms makes the condition a challenge for the surgeon, delaying diagnostics and leading to severe complications or death. In this case, a small calibre bullet entered the left ventricle and then impacted the femoris artery.

Abstract A simple and rapid impedimetric sensor applicable for industrial lipase activity quantification was developed and characterized. It is based on the lipase catalyzed degradation by hydrolysis of a thin nanocomposite substrate sensitive layer deposited on a PCB stick electrode usable as disposable or regenerable. The sensitive layer degradation rate was evaluated by the impedance changes registration along time resulting from its thickness diminution applying a small amplitude AC voltage with a constant frequency. The AC current phase shift variations along the time caused by the impedance changes were registered as s sensor response. The sensor was characterized in terms of linear quantification range, LOD, precision and quantification time. The response time was found to be from 80 to 6 s for the linear concentration range from 0.99x10

Abstract Purpose: To compare ETDRS panretinal laser photocoagulation (PRP) combined with intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) and photocoagulation targeted to ischemic retina (PIR) combined with IVR in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
Methods: PDR patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either PRP + IVR or PIR + IVR. ETRDS Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central subfield thickness (CSFT) measured on optic-coherence tomography images (OCT-Heidelberg Spectralis) were recorded at baseline and every 4 weeks for one year. Fluorescein leakage area (FLA) from active new vessels was measured every 12 weeks. Full-field ERG was recorded by means of DTL electrodes, following ISCEV standard recommendations, at baseline and after 3 months.
    Results: Twenty-eight eyes completed the study period. At baseline, mean ± SE BCVA (logMAR) was 0.44 ± 0.07 and 0.37 ± 0.08 (P = 0.5030); CSFT (μm) was 324.0 ± 20.4 and 330.1 ± 22.1 (P = 0.8417); and FLA (mm
Conclusions: PIR + IVR or PRP + IVR are comparable strategies regarding FLA control in PDR and led to similar retinal function impairment, based on ERG changes up to one-year follow-up.
Trial registration number: NCT03904056, date of registration 02/11/2019, retrospectively registered.

Abstract Objectives: To compare the response to tiocolchicine and verapamil injection in the plaque of patients with Peyronie's disease.
Materials and methods: Prospective, single-blind, randomized study, selecting patients who have presented Peyronie's disease for less than 18 months. Thiocolchicine 4mg or verapamil 5mg were given in 7 injections (once a week). Patients who had received any treatment for Peyronie's disease in the past three months were excluded. The parameters used were the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score, analysis of the curvature on pharmaco-induced erections and size of the plaque by ultrasonography.
Results: Twenty-five patients were randomized, 13 received thiocolchicine and 12 were treated with verapamil. Both groups were statistically similar. The mean curvature was 46.7º and 36.2º before and after thiocolchicine, respectively (p=0.019) and 50.4º and 42.08º before and after verapamil, respectively (p=0.012). The curvature improved in 69% of patients treated with thiocolchicine and in 66% of those who received verapamil. Regarding sexual function, there was an increase in the IIEF-5 from 16.69 to 20.85 (p=0.23) in the thiocolchicine group. In the verapamil group the IIEF-5 score dropped from 17.50 to 16.25 (p=0.58). In the thiocolchicine group, the plaque was reduced in 61% of patients. In the verapamil group, 8% presented decreased plaque size. No adverse event was associated to thiocolchicine.
Conclusion: The use of thiocolchicine in Peyronie's disease demonstrated improvement on penile curvature and reduction in plaque size. Thiocolchicine presented similar results to verapamil in curvature assessment. No significant side effects were observed with the use of tiocolchicine.
