Abstract The unprecedented decline of Taiwan's natural population increase rate from 3% in 1963 to 1.9% in 1973, attributed primarily to an increasing use of contraception, brought universal attention to one of the first and most successful national family planning programs, at a time when successes were few. Taiwan met its goal of decreasing its natural increase rate despite its young population, increasing numbers of women of childbearing ages, a strong preference for sons and a per capita income at the outset in 1963 of less than U.S.$200. Recognition of this achievement brought thousands of professionals, particularly from developing countries, to study the program firsthand: more than 3,000 during 1970--73 alone. This was matched by an avalanche of publications about the program that appeared around the world, written by practitioners, academics and others. This article tells the story of this success.

Abstract We aimed to assess the diagnostic application of urinary epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-binding growth factors in cancers of the digestive tract. By radioreceptor assay and radioimmunoassay, we determined these growth factors in 115 patients with various cancers of the digestive tract, 30 patients with benign disease, and 40 healthy controls. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and likelihood ratio were employed to determine the best diagnostic efficiency. Urinary EGFR-binding growth factors in each cancer group were significantly higher than those in the non-cancer groups. Multivariate analysis indicated that the growth factors, determined by both the radioreceptor assay (odds ratio, 1.184; 95% confidence interval,1.077-1.302; P = 0.001) and radioimmunoassay (odds ratio,1.055; 95% confidence interval, 1.002-1.111; P = 0.039), were associated, in a dose-related fashion, with the presence of cancers. By ROC curve analysis, the optimal cutoff values for EGFR-binding growth factors were 25.5 microg/g creatinine (radioreceptor assay) and 33.6 microg/g creatinine (radioimmunoassay). The resulting sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were 84.4%. 87.5%, 85.2%, 6.75 and 0.18 (for radioreceptor assay) and 86.1%, 67.5%, 81.3%, 2.64 and 0.21 (for radioimmunoassay), respectively. Except for pancreatic cancer the growth factors showed moderate diagnostic efficiency for the other digestive tract cancers. In conclusion, urinary EGFR-binding growth factors were increased in cancers of the digestive tract. They may be used as diagnostic tumor markers.

Abstract The prevalence of antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) was investigated in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and correlated with the clinical features. Anti-HCV was detected in 129 histology or aspiration cytology proven HCC patients and 54 healthy controls. Anti-HCV was examined by the HCV EIA (Abbott Laboratories). All healthy controls were anti-HCV-negative. Nineteen of 81 (23.5%) hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive HCC patients were positive for anti-HCV. Anti-HCV was found among 60.4% (29/48) of HCC patients without detectable HB-sAg. Forty-eight of 129 (37.2%) HCC patients were positive for anti-HCV. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of anti-HCV between patients with HBsAg (23.5%) and those without HBsAg (60.4%, P = 0.0001). However, irrespective of the status of HBsAg, there was no statistical difference in sex, age, routine liver function tests, alpha-fetoprotein concentration, or associated cirrhosis between patients with anti-HCV and those without. The results imply that hepatitis C virus may play a role in the pathogenesis of HCC.

Abstract Singh-Pruthi (1925) defined the ejaculatory reservoir as "an expansion of the ejaculatory duct at the base of the vesica [=aedeagus] present in Heteroptera." After carefully examining the external male genitalia of Dinidoridae, Scutelleridae, Tessaratomidae, and Cydnidae, we found that Singh-Pruthi's definition could not be satisfactorily applied to the above-mentioned families. Therefore, it is necessary to redefine the ejaculatory reservoir in the Pentatomomorpha. We found that the structure protrudes from the dorsobasal portion of the expansion of the ejaculatory duct within the apical one-half of the aedeagus. We redefine that part of the structure outside the base of the aedeagus as the "ejaculatory reservoir" and the other part within the aedeagus, including the expanded ejaculatory duct, as the "reservoir lumen." There are three differences between our definition and that of Singh-Pruthi for the ejaculatory reservoir: 1) the position (an evolutionary event) within the middle of the aedeagus versus at the base of the aedeagus, 2) the nature of the structure protruding from the expanded ejaculatory duct versus an expansion of the ejaculatory duct, and 3) the presence in only Pentatomomorpha versus in Heteroptera.

Abstract Plasmid pIF132 containing two direct repeats of the mel (melanin) sequence was used to monitor intraplasmid recombination. Five mutants of Streptomyces lividans TK64 deficient in intraplasmid recombination were isolated. Four contained additional defects in aerial mycelium formation, pigmentation, and nutrient requirements; among these two showed extensive amplification of chromosomal sequences. Mutant JT46 had no pleiotropic defects but had the most severe blockage in recombination. Only one of the mutants was slightly more sensitive to UV and two were slightly more sensitive to mitomycin C. Plasmid pWCL1 (containing pIJ702, pUC12, and HBVsAg sequences; Lee et al. 1986) could not stably replicate in TK64 without spontaneous deletions. In contrast the mutant JT46 maintained the integrity of pWCL1 much more stably.

Abstract The growth of auxotrophic bacteria remains the method of choice for the determination of biologically active folate metabolites in plasma. This report describes a microbiological assay for folates adapted to use disposable 96-well plates and an automatic plate reader. The modifications in the assay decreased reagent costs and made the analysis of hundreds of samples per day possible with a sensitivity limit of 10 fmol of (6S)-5-formyltetrahydrofolic acid. This limit compares favorably with that of previously reported, more laborious methods. The unnatural 6R diastereomer of 5-formyltetrahydrofolic acid did not interfere with the microbiological assay of the natural 6S diastereomer.

Abstract Circulating immune complexes (CIC), complement and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were detected in 93 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 16 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 54 healthy controls. The CIC and complements were significantly higher in HCC patients than in LC patients. The complement and polyethylene glycol(PEG)-CIC in HCC patients with LC were higher than those in LC only (P less than 0.0001). The complement levels in LC patients were significantly lower than in controls. There was no difference in C3 and C4 between HCC patients and controls, while the C3 proactivator was higher in HCC patients (P less than 0.02). The C1q-CIC was higher in HCC and LC patients when compared to controls (P less than 0.0001). In patients with HCC, there was no difference in the CIC and complement levels between patients with cirrhosis and those without. There were inverse correlations between C1q-CIC and C3 (P less than 0.05), C1q-CIC and C4 (P less than 0.04). The mean level of 3% PEG-CIC and C1q-CIC increased significantly as AFP elevated, but decreased as AFP was higher than 1599 ng/ml (P less than 0.05). These results imply that CIC increase with tumor growth but further tumor burden may result in a fall in CIC, there was a shifting of CIC from complement-fixing to non-complement-fixing as AFP increased gradually.

Abstract An unusual, intercalated photonic nanoarchitecture was discovered in the elytra of Taiwanese Trigonophorus rothschildi varians beetles. It consists of a multilayer structure intercalated with a random distribution of cylindrical holes normal to the plane of the multilayer. The nanoarchitectures were characterized structurally by scanning electron microscopy and optically by normal incidence, integrated and goniometric reflectance measurements. They exhibit an unsaturated specular and saturated non-specular component of the reflected light. Bioinspired, artificial nanoarchitectures of similar structure and with similar properties were realized by drilling holes of submicron size in a multilayer structure, showing that such photonic nanoarchitectures of biological origin may constitute valuable blueprints for artificial photonic materials.

Abstract An Escherichia coli-Streptomyces shuttle plasmid pIF132 containing two direct mel repeats was constructed. While pIF132 replicated relatively stably in E. coli (Rec+ or recA), its structure was unstable in S. lividans: recombination between the mel repeats resulted in a smaller plasmid, pIF138. Furthermore, pIF132 formed oligomers extensively in E. coli but not in S. lividans.

Abstract Propranolol is used clinically as a prophylactic drug to prevent oesophageal variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension. Vascular hyporesponsiveness is a common characteristic of the portal hypertensive state. The present study aimed to investigate whether chronic administration of propranolol could improve vascular responsiveness in portal hypertensive rats. Portal hypertension was induced by partial portal vein ligation (PVL). Sham-operated rats served as controls. There were four study groups: PVL-propranolol group (portal hypertensive rats receiving propranolol), PVL-vehicle group (portal hypertensive rats receiving saline), sham-propranolol group (sham-operated rats receiving propranolol) and sham-vehicle group (sham-operated rats receiving saline). Propranolol (30 mg kg-1 day-1) or saline was given for 9 days via gastric gavage starting 1 day before ligation and thereafter. Then, the superior mesenteric artery was removed from each group for contractile study after haemodynamic measurement. In portal hypertensive rats, propranolol significantly alleviated the hyperdynamic state, including portal pressure, cardiac index and total peripheral resistance in the treated group compared with the vehicle group. The maximal contractile responses to KCl and vasopressin in mesenteric artery were significantly greater in the sham-vehicle group than in the PVL-vehicle group. Long-term propranolol treatment enhanced the contractile reactivity of mesenteric artery to KCl and vasopressin in PVL rats, and the contractile profiles were corrected towards those in sham-treated animals. In contrast, propranolol treatment decreased heart rate, mean arterial pressure and cardiac index but did not alter the contractile responsiveness of sham-operated rats. These results showed that, in portal vein stenosed rats, long-term treatment with propranolol improved arterial contractile reactivity together with portal pressure reduction. The propranolol effect on vascular reactivity is probably related to haemodynamic improvement, instead of a direct contractile effect on the vasculature.
