Abstract Presence of a cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a relative contraindication to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biventricular ICDs are often used in the treatment of advanced heart failure; however, reports on experience with biventricular ICDs are lacking in the literature. In this case report, we describe a pacemaker-dependent patient with a biventricular ICD on whom an MRI of the lumbar spine was performed without having realized the presence of the ICD.

Abstract Background: Rate of mortality due to cardiovascular diseases is high in Maintenance Hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Additionally, prolonged QT interval is reportedly associated with high-risk ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death. Vascular calcification may be related to QT dispersion interval in MHD patients because the extensive nature of the calcification process may involve the conducting system and myocardium. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between QT interval and Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) as a sign of arterial stiffness associated with atherosclerosis in MHD patients. Patients and Methods: This prospective, observational study was conducted on 149 eligible MHD patients for 12 months. Patients using drugs known to affect QT interval were excluded. The patients were divided into four groups as follows: normal corrected QT (QTc) interval at the beginning and end of the study (n = 44, 29.5%), normal QTc interval at the beginning but prolonged QTc interval at the end of the study (n = 30, 20.1%), prolonged QTc interval at the beginning but normal QTc interval at the end of the study (n = 24, 16.1%), and prolonged QTc interval at the beginning and end of the study (n = 51, 34.2%). Demographic parameters, laboratory parameters, and PWV were assessed at the beginning and the 12th month of the study. Then, the data were analyzed using ANOVA or Pearson 2 test and P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: The study groups were similar with respect to age and comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. In addition, there were no significant differences among the groups regarding the initial PWV (P = 0.412); however, the ending PWV showed significant differences (P = 0.029). The results of multivariate analysis showed that PWV was independently associated with change in the maximum QTc (confidence interval: 0.039 – 1.787, P = 0.031, β = 0.178). Conclusions: The results suggested inclusion of QTc interval prolongation, as a predictor of cardiovascular disease, either alone or in combination with PWV in such high-risk patients.

Abstract Effects of Trichoderma harzianum on lettuce seedling development, plant quality characteristics at harvest and yield were investigated. Experiments were carried out in an unheated glasshouse where composted straw bales were used as the growing medium. A part of the experiment was carried out in a high tunnel where soil was the growing medium. Seeds were sown in peat and seedlings were grown in the presence of T. harzianum at dosages of 5, 10 and 15 g m-2 applied at sowing. Among the seedling characteristics studied only seedling fresh weight of cv. Yedikule was increased significantly. Effect of T. harzianum on lettuce yield was not statistically significant. In the glasshouse, the straw bales were composted with two different methods. In the method I, 134g N, 13g P, 25g K, and 76 g Ca, and in the method II, 54.3g N, 26g P, and 22.6g Ca were provided to the straw bales. The marketable yield of cv. Yedikule from the straw bales of method I was 503 g plant-1 from 15 g m-2 whereas the control remained the lowest with 425 g plant-1. For the same cultivar grown on the method II the highest marketable yield was obtained from 10 g m-2 with 303 g plant-1 compared to the control (150 g plant-1). The cv. Coolguard grown in the straw bales was tested only with the method I and the highest yield was from 15 g m-2 with 570 g plant-1 compared to 551 g plant-1 from the control. Dosage main effect regarding marketable yield in soil in the tunnel was not significant.

Abstract A modification of a protocol used to induce tobacco microspore embryogenesis was tested in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). In tobacco, uninucleate microspores are subjected to stress treatment by culturing in mannitol containing "B" medium at 33ºC for six days. The microspores are then transferred to maltose containing AT3 medium for further development. In the experiment presented here late uninucleate and bi-nucleate microspores of the eggplant cultivar Bambino were pre-cultured in B medium and then incubated at +4ºC, 25ºC and 33ºC, respectively, for two days. After the pre-treatments, microspore cultures were transferred to AT3 medium containing 0.25 M maltose and maintained at 25ºC in the dark. Presence of symmetrical division and multinucleate structures was checked with DAPI staining of the nucleus after one and two weeks. Symmetrical division of the nucleus and multinucleate structures were observed only in uni-nucleate microspores pre-treated at 33ºC for two days. The frequency of multinucleate structures was 19.4% under these conditions. We demonstrated that eggplant is responsive to the modified tobacco protocol in the production of symmetrically division and multinucleate structures. These results may be used as a basis for adaptation fully of the tobacco system in eggplant. A presença ...

Abstract In order to determine the potentials of in vitro gynogenetic induction via in vitro ovary culture in tomato a total of 358 ovaries were cultured. Flower buds, of six different cultivars, containing microspores at the uninucleate stage were removed from the plants and following an initial pretreatment on a solid 0.3 M mannitol starvation medium ovaries were cultured on four different media containing MS as the basic medium together with either kinetin riboside or BAP as cytokinins, both in two concentrations, being in combination with the IAA as the auxin also in two concentrations. Ovaries were subcultured on two media, i.e. NLN+2,4-D 1.11 mg l -1 +Glycine 500 mgl/l and NLN+NAA 0.93 mg l -1 + Casein Hydrolysae 5 g l -1 , to induce further sporophytic development. Regeneration neither of somatic nor of gametophytic origin were observed. During culture, ovary walls turned brown and withered but the ovules carried were of two types: one was of globular shape and when observed microscopically showed living cell clumps within the embryo sacs and the other was of almost rectangular shape comprising shrunk ovules containing dead embryo sac cells within the ovules.

Abstract Haploid induction potentials in Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (2n=2x=24) via unilateral pollination with Solanum sisymbriifolium Lam. (2n=2x=24) pollen were investigated. In April, the cv. Invictus set 12 fruits out of 72 pollinations and, the remaining six cultivars did not set fruit. Whereas in May, from a total of 242 pollinations onto eight varieties, 26 fruits were obtained from only six of the varieties. In addition to the ovules obtained from the cv. Invictus fruits, cv. Sagit 146 fruits contained 65 ovules. While cv. Invictus ovules gave rise to plantlets, ovules from cv. Sagit 146 were lost due to contamination. Chromosome counting of eight in vitro plants of cv. Invictus showed cells with 24, 25 and 26 chromosomes. Haploid chromosome numbers were not observed in any of the cells studied. Potentials of the approach were also discussed.

Abstract Objective: Increased red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the relationship between CAD detected by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and RDW. Methods: Records of 291 patients who underwent 16-slice CCTA due to the presence of angina-like chest pain were retrospectively evaluated. Exclusion criteria were applied. Clinical characteristics, risk factors for CAD, and RDW values on CCTA were noted. Results: RDW levels in patients with CAD were significantly higher than in those with normal coronary arteries (NCAs) (15.50+-1.57 compared to 14.80+-1.41, p=0.001). Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and history of smoking were significantly more common in the CAD group (p=0.018, p=0.007, and p=0.013, respectively). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, RDW (p=0.009 [odds ratio (OR): 1.352; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.081–1.683]), age (p<0.001 [OR: 1.063; 95% CI 1.031–1.090]), and history of smoking (p=0.003 [OR: 2.672; 95% CI: 1.360–5.232]) were shown to be independent predictors for CAD detected by CCTA. Conclusion: The present results suggest that higher RDW levels are independently associated with presence of CAD detected by CCTA in patients without known CAD. Further studies are warranted to clarify the exact role of RDW in risk stratification.

Abstract Objectives: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by several metabolic abnormalities that may lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, and atherosclerosis which are associated with chronic inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. Due to this fact PCOS patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We used echocardiographic quantification tools to detect subclinical changes in myocardial functions. Materials and Methods: Echocardiographic, hormonal and metabolic measurements were performed in twenty-six women with PCOS and twenty-three healthy volunteers. The age of the attendants ranged between 20 and 31 years. PCOS was diagnosed by using the Rotterdam criteria. We compared the myocardial functions of PCOS patients without any cardiovascular symptoms with healthy volunteers by using strain echocardiography. Results: No differences were found between the two groups’ strain, strain rate and myocardial velocity measurements. Conclusion: According to our study PCOS patients without any clinical cardiovascular symptoms have no impairment in myocardial functions. These results should be further confirmed in larger controlled studies.

Abstract The culture medium E20A was used as part of the dihaploidization technique in the genetic improvement of Cucumis melo . During long term maintenance of haploid stock plants via subculture of microcuttings, weak shoot development and death of plantlets were observed. Therefore in search of a suitable medium to induce vigorous development of the long term maintained plantlets, the present experiment was conducted. The basic media E20A and MS were used with or without only one concentration of IAA, i.e., 0.01 mg l‾ 1 , in combination with one of the three concentrations of BAP, i.e., 0.225 mg l‾ 1 , 1.125 mg l‾ 1 and 2.250 mg l‾ 1 . Plantlet length, number of nodiums, callus length and diameter, rates of root and shoot initiation were recorded weekly during culture. It was determined that while single shooting and up-to-the-standard plantlets were obtained using E20A medium containing 0.01 mg l‾ 1 IAA (medium one), multi shooting plantlets with shorter internodiums were obtained from the E20A medium only with 0.225 mg l‾ 1 BAP (medium three). The most desirable shoot development was obtained from the media without BAP but containing 0.01 mg l‾ 1 IAA. Integration of BAP into the media resulted in callus development which in turn restricted shoot development. It was concluded that low salt media is more suitable for in vitro induction of axillary buds and shoot development in melon.
