Abstract Environmental deformations and changes put countries under socioeconomic stress at the global level and are, therefore, an essential topic of discussion. In this context, this paper analyzes the impact of financial development, tourism, and economic growth on three different environmental indicators using second-generation panel data techniques for the top ten tourism destinations. This study tests whether there is a U-shaped relationship between income and the load capacity factor and an inverse U-shaped link between carbon emissions, ecological footprint and income for the period 2004–2018. Despite the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis, which is often analyzed in this context, this empirical analysis investigates a new one—that of the load capacity curve (LCC) hypothesis. The results of the study show that the LCC and EKC hypotheses are not valid. The long-run panel estimators also indicate that international tourist arrivals are a factor that improves environmental quality, while financial development reduces the load capacity factor. Based on the results, it is recommended to support eco-friendly tourism for sustainable development.

Abstract This study examines the role of renewable electricity generation (EG) on environmental quality in the top 10 carbon dioxide (CO2) emitting European countries by considering ongoing energy crisis. By doing so, the research considers the environmental effect of renewable EG (such as hydro, solar, and wind) at a disaggregated level from January 2, 2019 to August 31, 2023, using the wavelet coherence (WC), quantile-on-quantile (QQ) regression and Granger causality in quantiles (GQ) methods. The outcomes demonstrate that (i) hydro, solar, and wind EG have a strong dependence on CO2 emissions, while effects vary across times and frequencies; (ii) hydro EG reduces CO2 emissions in Germany, Belgium, and Austria; (iii) at higher quantiles, solar EG curbs CO2 emissions in Italy, Spain, Romania, and Austria; (iv) at higher quantiles, wind EG lowers CO2 emissions in all countries except Bulgaria; (v) hydro, solar, and wind EG generally have a causal effect on CO2 emissions across all quantiles except for some lower (0.05–0.10), middle (0.40–0.60), and higher (0.90–0.95) quantiles. The results thus show that CO2 emissions in European countries are strongly influenced by renewable EG as a function of time, frequency, and quantile. In line with the outcomes, the study suggests continuing to rely on hydro EG for Germany, solar EG for Italy and Austria, and wind EG for all other countries as the best EG alternative for achieving a carbon-neutral economy. In this way, countries can benefit from renewable EG and at the same time contribute to their energy security.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on economic policy uncertainty in the US and the UK. The impact of the increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths in the country and the increase in the number of cases and deaths outside the country may vary. To examine this, the study employs the bootstrap ARDL cointegration approach from March 8, 2020 to May 24, 2020. According to the bootstrap ARDL results, a long-run equilibrium relationship is confirmed for five out of the ten models. The long-term coefficients obtained from the ARDL models suggest that an increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths outside of the UK and the US has a significant effect on economic policy uncertainty. The US is more affected by the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. The UK, on the other hand, is more negatively affected by the increase in the number of COVID-19 deaths outside the country than the increase in the number of cases. Moreover, another significant finding from the study demonstrates that COVID-19 is a factor of great uncertainty for both countries in the short-term.

Abstract Bu çalışma Türkiye’de 1960-2018 döneminde yeni geliştirilen Fourier-Shin eşbütünleşme testi ve dinamik en küçük kareler (DEKK) tahmincisini kullanarak eğitimin ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkisini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.

Abstract Human activities threaten the future of the ecosystem by emitting pollution to the air, water, and soil. Considering the increasing ecological footprint (EF), the study focuses on investigating the role of life expectancy and hydropower consumption by controlling also income, trade openness, and globalization on the environment under the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis for Turkey during 1971–2018. In this context, the study performs recently developed augmented autoregressive distributed lag (AARDL) and dynamic ARDL (DARDL) methods. The results show that (i) life expectancy increases the environmental pressure; (ii) hydropower consumption has no effect on the EF; (iii) globalization and trade openness reduce the EF; (iv) the EKC hypothesis is valid, but the estimated turning point lies between USD 19,914 and USD 20,571, which is far from the sample period in Turkey. From the overall results, it can be concluded that Turkey cannot solve environmental problems with insufficient income levels, an increasing elderly population, and ineffective use of hydropower. Hence, Turkey should rely on income much more, use hydropower much more efficiently, and benefit from the spillover effect of technological innovations related to globalization and foreign trade to significantly reduce the EF.

Abstract Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and stock prices during the period from March 2003 to March 2021. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses asymmetric and symmetric frequency domain causality tests and focuses on BRIC countries, namely, Brazil, Russia, India and China. Findings – The findings of the symmetric causality test confirm unidirectional permanent causality from EPU to stock prices for Brazil and India and bidirectional causality for China. However, according to the asymmetric causality test, the findings for China show that there is no causality between the variables. The results for Brazil and India indicate that there is unidirectional permanent causality from positive components of EPU to positive components of stock prices. Moreover, for Brazil, there is unidirectional temporary causality from the negative components of EPU to the negative components of stock prices. For India, there is temporary causality in the opposite direction. Originality/value – The reactions of financial markets to positive and negative shocks differ. In this context, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first attempt to examine the causal relationships between stock prices and uncertainty using an asymmetric frequency domain approach. Thus, the study enables the analysis of the effects of positive and negative shocks in the stock market separately.

Abstract In this study, dynamic links between central bank reserves (CBR), credit default swap (CDS) spreads, and foreign exchange (FX) rates are investigated. So, Turkey, which is a negative outlier country among other peer emerging countries, is examined by considering recent developments on these indicators. In doing so, the study covers relatively high frequency (i.e., weekly) data from January 2, 2004 to November 12, 2021, performs various econometric approaches as Wavelet Coherence (WC), Quantile-on-Quantile Regression (QQR), and Granger Causality in Quantiles (GCQ) as main models, and applies Toda-Yamamoto (TY) causality and Quantile Regression (QR) for the robustness. The results show that (i) there is a time-frequency dependency between the CBR, CDS spreads, and FX rates; (ii) a bidirectional link exists between the CBR and FX rates; between the FX rates and CDS spreads; and between the CDS spreads and CBR; (iii) the link exists in most quantiles except for some lower and middle quantiles for some indicators; (iv) explanatory effect of the indicators on each other varies based on quantiles; (v) the robustness of the results are validated by the TY causality test for the WC model and by the QR approach for the QQR model. The results suggest the significance of the CBR for the FX rates, the FX rates for the CDS spreads, and the CDS spreads for the CBR.

Abstract Energy is recognized as an important factor in the production process by capital and labor. Energy consumption has increased substantially in the world, especially since the Industrial Revolution and the 1973 oil crisis. In this study, the causality relationship between energy consumption (petroleum, electricity, per capita and total primary energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions) and economic growth is estimated by using the JJ cointegration test, DLVAR, generalized impulse-response, and variance decomposition analyses for the Turkish economy for the 1972–2011 period. According to the results of the JJ cointegration test, there is no co-movement between energy consumption and economic growth in the long run, but the DLVAR analysis indicates that energy is an important input for the Turkish economy's steady growth in the short run. The findings lead to the conclusion that a positive unidirectional causality runs from petroleum, electricity, primary energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions to economic growth in the short run. The results of generalized impulse-response and variance decomposition analyses also support the results of the DLVAR analysis.

Abstract: In this paper, the relationship between FDI and foreign trade is investigated by symmetric; Sims (1972), Dolado-Lütkepohl (1996), Hacker-Hatemi (2006) and asymmetric; Hatemi-J (2012) causality analysis after the liberalization period 1983-2014 for the ... ...

Abstract In this paper, the relationship between FDI and foreign trade is investigated by symmetric; Sims (1972), Dolado-Lütkepohl (1996), Hacker-Hatemi (2006) and asymmetric; Hatemi-J (2012) causality analysis after the liberalization period 1983-2014 for the Turkish economy. The results of the empirical analysis show that unidirectional positive and statistically significant causality is going from total (goods and services) and only goods export, import and foreign trade (total import and export) to FDI. The conclusion is that findings point out to the existence of complementary relationship between the variables. Consequently, these results support that the government should encourage foreign trade to increase FDI inflows in Turkey.
