Abstract The present tutorial proposes to use concepts of physics and mathematics to help behavioral scientists to use differential equations in their studies. It focuses on the first-order and the second-order (damped oscillator) differential equation. Simple examples allow to detail the meaning of the coefficients, the conditions of applicability of these differential equations, the underlying hypothesis, and their consequences for the researcher willing to use them. More complex psychological examples demonstrate the importance of parameters' interpretation. Particular attention is paid to how potential external perturbations should be considered. Abstract Objectives: No French validated concise scales are available for measuring the experience of inpatients in pediatrics. This study aims to adapt the adult PPE-15 to a pediatric population, and translating it in French, as well as to establish reference values for adults, teenagers, and parents of young children.
Methods: Cultural adaptation involved forward and backward translations, along with pretests in all three populations. Dimensional structure and internal consistency were assessed using principal component analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and Cronbach's alpha. Construct validity was assessed by examining established associations between patient satisfaction and inpatient variables, including length of stay, and preventable readmission.
Results: A total of 25,626 adults, 293 teenagers and 1,640 parents of young children completed the French questionnaires. Factor analysis supported a single dimension (Cronbach's alpha: adults: 0.85, teenagers: 0.82, parents: 0.80). Construct validity showed the expected pattern of association, with dissatisfaction correlating with patient- and stay-related factors, notably length of stay, and readmission.
Conclusion: The French versions of the PPE-15 for adults, teenagers and parents of pediatric patients stand as valid and reliable instruments for gauging patient satisfaction regarding their hospital stay after discharge.

Abstract Objectives: To investigate 1) whether care-related regrets (regret intensity, number of recent regrets) are associated with sick leave, independently of personality traits, perceived safety climate, and physical activity; and 2) whether these associations were mediated or moderated by coping strategies.
Methods: Using a longitudinal international observational study (ICARUS), data were collected by the means of a weekly web survey. Descriptive and generalized estimation equations were performed.
Results: A total of 276 newly practicing healthcare professionals (nurses, physicians, others) from 11 countries were included in this study. The average proportion of weeks with at least one day of sick leave was 3.2%. Nurses' sick leave increased with number of care-related regrets (Relative Risk [RR]=1.52; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]=[1.18; 1.95], p=.001), while physicians' sick leave increased with intensity of care-related regret (RR=1.21; 95%CI=[1.00; 1.21], p=.049). Coping was associated with lower risk of sick leave for nurses (RR
Conclusion: Regrets are associated with increased risks of sick leave, even in young healthcare professionals. Use of coping strategies partially mediated these associations in nurses. The results of this study should be used to inform interventions to reduce emotional burdens and enhance protective coping strategies.

Abstract Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is an unusual mycotic infection associated to immunosupression. We present a 34 year-old woman with HIV infection with a necrotic primary mucormycosis of the skin associated to a venous catheter. She was treated with amphotericin B and surgical debridement.

Abstract Background: Actinic prurigo (AP) is a photodermatosis with a restricted ethnic distribution, mainly affecting Mestizo women (mixed Indian and European). The lesions are polymorphic and include macules, papules, crusts, hyperpigmentation and lichenification. Thalidomide, an effective immunomodulatory drug, was first used successfully to treat AP in 1973. In this work we describe the effect that thalidomide had on TNF-alpha sera levels and on IL-4- and IFN gamma (IFNgamma)-producing lymphocytes of actinic prurigo (AP) patients.
Methods: Actinic prurigo patients were analyzed before and after thalidomide treatment. The percentage of IL-4+ or IFNgamma+ CD3+ lymphocytes was analyzed in eight of them by flow cytometry. TNFalpha in sera was measured by ELISA in 11 patients.
Results: A direct correlation was observed between resolution of AP lesions and an increase in IFNgamma+ CD3+ peripheral blood mononuclear cells (P < or = 0.001) and a decrease in TNFalpha serum levels (no statistical difference). No IL-4+ CD3+ cells were detected.
Conclusions: Our findings confirm that AP is a disease that has an immunological component and that thalidomide clinical efficacy is exerted not only through inhibition of TNFalpha synthesis, but also through modulation of INFgamma-producing CD3+ cells. These cells could be used as clinical markers for recovery.
