    Abstract The identification of instability problems in freight trains circulation such as unbalanced loads is of particular importance for railways management companies and operators. The early detection of unbalanced loads prevents significant damages that may cause service interruptions or derailments with high financial costs. This study aims to develop a methodology capable of automatically identifying unbalanced vertical loads considering the limits proposed by the reference guidelines. The research relies on a 3D numerical simulation of the train-track dynamic response to the presence of longitudinal and transverse scenarios of unbalanced vertical loads and resorting to a virtual wayside monitoring system. This methodology is based on measured data from accelerometers and strain gauges installed on the rail and involves the following steps: (i) feature extraction, (ii) features normalization based on a latent variable method, (iii) data fusion, and (iv) feature discrimination based on an outlier and a cluster analysis. Regarding feature extraction, the performance of ARX and PCA models is compared. The results prove that the methodology is able to accurately detect and classify longitudinal and transverse unbalanced loads with a reduced number of sensors.

    Abstract By 2050 more than 1.6 billion women worldwide will be of post-reproductive age, with >75% reporting severe menopausal symptoms. The last few years saw a gradual uplift in public awareness reaffirming the health needs of women with menopause. Still, effective translation of available evidence on menopause treatments is hindered by several methodological limitations and poor research conduct. We argue that a paradigm shift is required in menopause research to address the remaining knowledge gap and guide safe evidence-based care provision. A critical misconception across studies on menopause is the assumption that women represent a homogeneous group who respond similarly to a particular therapy irrespective of their exposure and individual risk factors. We highlight potential solutions to optimize the quality of future research in menopause including adopting robust trial methodology, standardize outcome reporting to capture quality-of-life measures, and improve lay patient and public involvement in future research.

    Abstract Myelodysplastic Neoplasms (MDS) have been traditionally studied through the assessment of blood counts, cytogenetics, and morphology. In recent years, the introduction of molecular assays has improved our ability to diagnose MDS. The role of Measurable (minimal) Residual Disease (MRD) in MDS is evolving, and molecular and flow cytometry techniques have been used in several studies. In this review, we will highlight the evolving concept of MRD in MDS, outline the various techniques utilized, and provide an overview of the studies reporting MRD and the correlation with outcomes.

    Abstract This paper aims to detect railway vehicle wheel flats and polygonized wheels using an envelope spectrum analysis. First, a brief explanation of railway vehicle wheel problems is presented, focusing particularly on wheel flats and polygonal wheels. Then, three types of wheel flat profiles and three periodic out-of-roundness (OOR) harmonic order ranges for the polygonal wheels are evaluated in the simulations, along with analyses implemented using only healthy wheels for comparison. Moreover, the simulation implements track irregularity profiles modelled based on the US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). From the numerical calculations, the dynamic responses of several strain gauges (SGs) and accelerometer sensors located on the rail between sleepers are evaluated. Regarding defective wheels, only the right wheel of the first wheelset is considered as a defective wheel, but the detection methodology works for various damaged wheels located in any position. The results from the application of the methodology show that the envelope spectrum analysis successfully distinguishes a healthy wheel from a defective one.

    Abstract This dissertation is about impacts to the capacities for autonomy and collaboration for the cyborg self integrated with brain-machine (BMI) and brain-to-brain interfaces (BTBI). These capacities are dependent on the reorganization of the cyborg self boundaries which are contingent on the development cycle of the underlying BTBI multidimensional systems as evidenced in recent neuroscience research and development (Carmena et al., 2003; Fitzsimmons, Lebedev, Peikon & Nicolelis, 2009; Hochberg et al., 2012; Pais-Vieira, Lebedev, Kunicki, Wang, & Nicolelis, 2013; Pais-Vieira, Chiuffa, Lebedev, Yadav, & Nicolelis, 2015; Ramakrishnan et al., 2015; Wessberg et al., 2000) and speculated by the science fiction of the Nexus trilogy (Naam, 2015a, 2015b, 2015c). The central accomplishments of this study include furthering the concept of the cyborg by positing a cyborg self with representational, cognitive, and functional dimensions, and identifying the cyborg self as a special case of the “cognitive assemblage” (Hayles, 2017, p 11). My analysis entails understanding an interdisciplinary model of the self that addresses the dynamic nature of the biological self, the self as a process, as a complex system emerging from material, physiological, cognitive, psychological, and social processes that is autobiographical and unified, having ownership and agency of mind and body (Damasio, 2010; Hayles, 2017; Marks-Tarlow, 1999; Ramachandran, 2004) dovetailing (Clark, 2003, 2008) with nonconscious cognitive assemblages (Hayles, 2017). I demonstrate that the dimensions of the cyborg self are reorganized by the development process of BMI and BTBI further affecting the locus or loci of self. The recursive reorganization of the cyborg self boundaries and dimensions leads to greatly fluctuating capacities for autonomy and collaboration. I discuss the competing cultural forces such as transhumanism, and government and corporate interests promoting and hindering the advancement of NBIC and BTBI research and development, as well as the role of science fiction as a futuring tool, and the possibility, probability, and preferability of a cyborg self in 2040. The research design is essentially a case study of contemporary and speculative BTBI in which I analyzed the multidimensional systems that comprise BTBI, their functionalities, and their development evolution. I analyzed how the cyborg self, autonomy, and collaboration showed up for the subjects integrated with BTBI. As NBIC and BTBI progresses, autonomy and collaboration face many challenges as they become pendulums swinging between ever increasing and decreasing capacities that are contingent upon the latest development cycle.

    Abstract Biosorbent materials such as nut shells has been considered a promising alternative to the classic methods to remove potentially toxic elements from contaminated waters, improving water quality for other uses. The present study evaluated the sorption capacity of almond, hazelnut, pistachio and walnut shells for the single and simultaneous removal of As, Cd, Co, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn from contaminated waters. The influence of key parameters such as sorbent dose, ionic strength (ultrapure water vs. mineral water), element competition (mono-vs. multi-element spiked solution) and initial element concentration (maximum allowed value in wastewater discharges and ten times lower) was assessed. Hazelnut shells stood out as the material with higher potential to remove Cd, Co, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in the tested conditions, achieving up to 99% of removal (Cd and Pb). Arsenic was not removed by none of the studied materials and the removal of Cr was only obtained in a simple matrix and in mono-element solution (41% of removal). An increase of matrix complexity negatively affected the sorption capacity of all the biosorbents in the removal of all the elements tested. The same behavior was obtained when the elements were simultaneously present in solution, with Pb, Cd and Hg being highly influenced by the presence of other elements. The increase in sorbent dose from 1 to 5 g/L allowed to at least duplicate the removal of Cd, Co, Ni and Zn by all the biosorbents. When decreasing the initial element concentration ten times the maximum allowed value in wastewater discharges, a significant increase of elements removal was attained, more pronounced for Hg and Pb. The possibility to change initial conditions towards high efficiencies validate the high potential of those biosorbents to be used in water remediation, with special focus on hazelnut shells, although other sorbents such as walnut or almond shells can be considered efficient with appropriate initial conditions and depending on the target elements to be removed.

    Abstract In railways, weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems are composed of a series of sensors designed to capture and record the dynamic vertical forces applied by the passing train over the rail. From these forces, with specific algorithms, it is possible to estimate axle weights, wagon weights, the total train weight, vehicle speed, etc. Infrastructure managers have a particular interest in identifying these parameters for comparing real weights with permissible limits to warn when the train is overloaded. WIM is also particularly important for controlling non-uniform axle loads since it may damage the infrastructure and increase the risk of derailment. Hence, the real-time assessment of the axle loads of railway vehicles is of great interest for the protection of railways, planning track maintenance actions and for safety during the train operation. Although weigh-in-motion systems are used for the purpose of assessing the static loads enforced by the train onto the infrastructure, the present study proposes a new approach to deal with the issue. In this paper, a WIM algorithm developed for ballasted tracks is proposed and validated with synthetic data from trains that run in the Portuguese railway network. The proposed methodology to estimate the wheel static load is successfully accomplished, as the load falls within the confidence interval. This study constitutes a step forward in the development of WIM systems capable of estimating the weight of the train in motion. From the results, the algorithm is validated, demonstrating its potential for real-world application.

    Abstract This paper examined the toxins naturally produced by marine dinoflagellates and their effects on increases in β-amyloid plaques along with tau protein hyperphosphorylation, both major drivers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This approach is in line with the demand for certain natural compounds, namely those produced by marine invertebrates that have the potential to be used in the treatment of AD. Current advances in AD treatment are discussed as well as the main factors that potentially affect the puzzling global AD pattern. This study focused on yessotoxins (YTXs), gymnodimine (GYM), spirolides (SPXs), and gambierol, all toxins that have been shown to reduce β-amyloid plaques and tau hyperphosphorylation, thus preventing the neuronal or synaptic dysfunction that ultimately causes the cell death associated with AD (or other neurodegenerative diseases). Another group of toxins described, okadaic acid (OA) and its derivatives, inhibit protein phosphatase activity, which facilitates the presence of phosphorylated tau proteins. A few studies have used OA to trigger AD in zebrafish, providing an opportunity to test in vivo the effectiveness of new drugs in treating or attenuating AD. Constraints on the production of marine toxins for use in these tests have been considered. Different lines of research are anticipated regarding the action of the two groups of toxins.
