Abstract Damage production and amorphization resulting from the interaction of medium-energy (from 40 to 480 keV) noble-gas ions (from He to Kr) with potassium tantalate (KTaO3) are determined using ion channeling measurements. A disorder accumulation model has been fit to the maximum damage concentration versus ion fluence to extract the cross sections for direct-impact and defect-stimulated amorphization, and the results indicate that defect-stimulated amorphization is the dominant mechanism. These cross sections exhibit a strong dependence on the calculated cross sections for displacing lattice atoms, indicating a dominant contribution of nuclear interactions to the defect production and amorphization processes under the irradiation conditions used in this study. These experimental findings, along with the model fits, suggest that the difference in recoil spectra between He and the other heavier ions may be the main driving force for the decreased damage efficiency observed for He ions, which results in a reduced rate of damage accumulation.

Abstract Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in a channeling direction (RBS/C) is a powerful tool for analysis of the fraction of atoms displaced from their lattice positions. However, it is in many cases not straightforward to analyze what is the actual defect structure underlying the RBS/C signal. To reveal insights of RBS/C signals from arbitrarily complex defective atomic structures, we develop here a method for simulating the RBS/C spectrum from a set of arbitrary read-in atom coordinates (obtained, e.g., from molecular dynamics simulations). We apply the developed method to simulate the RBS/C signals from Ni crystal structures containing randomly displaced atoms, Frenkel point defects, and extended defects, respectively. The RBS/C simulations show that, even for the same number of atoms in defects, the RBS/C signal is much stronger for the extended defects. Comparison with experimental results shows that the disorder profile obtained from RBS/C signals in ion-irradiated Ni is due to a small fraction of extended defects rather than a large number of individual random atoms.

Abstract The use of Fe films as multi-element targets in space radiation experiments with high-intensity ultrashort laser pulses requires a surface structure that can enhance the laser energy absorption on target, as well as a low concentration and uniform distribution of light element contaminants within the films. In this paper, (110) preferred orientation nanocrystalline Fe thin films with controlled morphology and composition were grown on (100)-oriented Si substrates by oblique angle RF magnetron sputtering, at room temperature. The evolution of films key-parameters, crucial for space-like radiation experiments with organic material, such as nanostructure, morphology, topography, and elemental composition with varying RF source power, deposition pressure, and target to substrate distance is thoroughly discussed. A selection of complementary techniques was used in order to better understand this interdependence, namely X-ray Diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and Non-Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy. The films featured a nanocrystalline, tilted nanocolumn structure, with crystallite size in the (110)-growth direction in the 15-25 nm range, average island size in the 20-50 nm range, and the degree of polycrystallinity determined mainly by the shortest target-to-substrate distance (10 cm) and highest deposition pressure (10

Abstract Multielement solid solution alloys are intrinsically disordered on the atomic scale, and many of their advanced properties originate from the local structural characteristics. The local structure of a NiCoCr solid solution alloy is measured with x-ray or neutron total scattering and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques. The atomic pair distribution function analysis does not exhibit an observable structural distortion. However, an EXAFS analysis suggests that the Cr atoms are favorably bonded with Ni and Co in the solid solution alloys. This short-range order (SRO) may make an important contribution to the low values of the electrical and thermal conductivities of the Cr-alloyed solid solutions. In addition, an EXAFS analysis of Ni ion irradiated samples reveals that the degree of SRO in NiCoCr alloys is enhanced after irradiation.

Abstract β–SiC nanoprecipitates can be patterned in crystalline silicon with an almost monomodal size distribution by simultaneous-dual-beam of C⁺and Si⁺ion implantations at 550 °C. Their shape appears as spherical (average diameter ~4–5 nm) ,and they are in epitaxial relationship with the crystalline silicon matrix. The narrow size distribution follows the left wing of the carbon distribution where the nuclear ion stopping, and thus the point defect generation rate is largest. This observation allows us to conclude that the induced damage act as sinks for C atoms leading to the SiC nanoprecipitates formation centered at the maximum of the simulated damage distribution. The nuclear reaction analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize the samples.
