Abstract Scientific grant applications are subjected to scholarly peer review. Studies show that the success rates of grant applications are often higher for male than for female applicants, suggesting that gender bias is common in peer review. However, these findings mostly come from studies in Europe, North America and Australia. Here we report the analyses of gender-specific success rates of applications to the fellowships offered by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Because we analyze the observational data (i.e., not experimental), our aim here is to describe the possible gender gaps in the success rates, rather than the examination of gender bias per se. Results show that the success rates are consistently higher for male applicants than for female applicants among five different fellowship categories. The gender gaps in the success rates varied significantly between research fields in some Fellowship categories. Furthermore, in some fellowship categories, the gender gaps were significantly associated with the representation of female applicants (both positive and negative correlations were found). Though the causes of the gender gaps are unknown, unintentional gender bias during the review process is suggested. Pre-application gender gaps may also be contributing to the gender gaps in success rates. At least some of the observed gender gaps were relatively small, which may be partly explicable by the designs of the review process. However, gender gaps or biases acting prior to the application, such as self-selection bias, may have reduced the superficial gender gaps in the success rates. Further investigations that control for the effects of covariates (e.g., scientific merits of each applicant, which were not accessible to us) and those of other funding agencies, especially of non-Western countries, are warranted.

Abstract When task-irrelevant nontarget sound temporally sandwiches brief target visual stimuli, its perceived duration is compressed (time compression). Since little is known about the mechanisms of time compression, this study examined its causal factors. Experiment 1 measured the effects of preceding, trailing, and sandwiching sounds on visual duration perception and examined whether adding the first two effects predicts the empirical effect of the third. The time compression occurred only when the target visual stimulus was 300 ms, but not for a target duration ≥500 ms. However, the predicted additive effect did not match the time compression. Experiment 2 examined the weighted integration of unisensory estimates (visual filled interval and auditory empty interval) by measuring the perceived duration of unimodal and multimodal stimuli. The predicted duration by weighted integration fitted the time compression occurring at the target duration of 300 ms. However, when the target was 500 ms or longer, no time compression occurred and the predicted durations were longer than the empirical durations. These results suggest that the visual system with weak temporal resolution integrated more accurate and reliable temporal information, rather than additive effect, resulting in time compression only when the target duration was too short. Abstract Background: Previous studies on decision-making of living kidney donors have indicated issues regarding donors' autonomy is inherent in decision-making to donate their kidney. Establishing effective decision-making support that guarantees autonomy of living kidney donor candidates is important.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties in the decision-making support when clinical transplant coordinators advocating for the autonomy of donor candidates of living donor kidney transplantation and to identify the methods to deal with these difficulties.
    Design: A qualitative descriptive study.
Participants: Ten clinical transplant coordinators supporting living kidney donors.
Approach: Semi-structured interviews were conducted using an interview guide. The modified grounded theory approach was utilised to analyse.
Results: Three categories related to difficulties were as follows: issues inherent to the interaction between coordinators, donor candidates and their families; issues regarding the environment and institutional background in which coordinators operate; and emotional labour undertaken by coordinators in the decision-making support process. Additionally, five categories related to methods were as follows: assessing the autonomy of donor candidates based on the coordinators nursing experience; interventions for the donor candidates and their family members based on the coordinators nursing experience; smooth coordination with medical staff; clarifying and asserting their views as coordinators; and readiness to protect the donor candidates.
Conclusion: The involvement of highly experienced coordinators with excellent and assertive communication skills as well as the ability to reflect on their own practices is essential. Moreover, we may need to fundamentally review the transplant community, where power domination is inherent.

Abstract We report a case of large left ventricular pseudoaneurysm after inferior acute myocardial infarction. Patch repair is commonly performed; however, only a few studies have described specific surgical techniques for left ventricular pseudoaneurysm repair of the inferior left ventricular wall. As an optimal repair technique for left ventricular pseudoaneurysm of the inferior left ventricular wall is lacking, we believe our technique is safe and effective in repairing this pathology.
