Abstract Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance have most commonly been viewed in the context of human use and effects. However, both have co-existed in nature for millennia. Recently the roles of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes have started to be discussed in terms of functions other than bacterial inhibition and protection. This special topic will focus on both the traditional role of antibiotics as warfare mechanisms and their alternative roles and uses within nature such as antibiotics as signals or communication mechanisms, antibiotic selection at low concentrations, the non-specific role of resistance mechanisms in nature: e.g. efflux pumps, evolution of antibiotic resistance and the role of persisters in natural antibiotic resistance

Abstract This article addresses the many complex and traumatic losses wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast to individually based, symptom-focused grief work, a resilience-oriented, systemic approach with complex losses contextualizes the distress and mobilizes relational resources to support positive adaptation. Applying a family resilience framework to pandemic-related losses, discussion focuses on the importance of shared belief systems in (1) meaning-making processes; (2) a positive, hopeful outlook and active agency; and (3) transcendent values and spiritual moorings for inspiration, transformation, and positive growth. Practice guidelines are offered to facilitate adaptation and resilience.

Abstract In the USA, Indur M Goklany, an official at the Interior Department, was reported in The New York Times as deliberately including misleading information about climate change in the agency's official reports 1 In Europe, on the brink of the EU signing its first climate law, concerns swirled around increased pressure from climate denial groups, including those with fossil fuel interests Having left the EU, anxieties in the UK had a more urgent charge, not least given that the ruling Conservative Party retains links with prominent climate change sceptics, including the Global Warming Policy Foundation With the dossier ‘Climate Change and the Decolonized Future of Theatre’, a number of authors proceed on the basis that the world already looks very different due to global warming

Abstract With growing interest in systemic views of human resilience, this article updates and clarifies our understanding of the concept of resilience as involving multilevel dynamic processes over time. Family resilience refers to the functioning of the family system in dealing with adversity: Assessment and intervention focus on the family impact of stressful life challenges and the family processes that foster positive adaptation for the family unit and all members. The application of a family resilience framework is discussed and illustrated in clinical and community-based training and practice. Use of the author's research-informed map of core processes in family resilience is briefly noted, highlighting the recursive and synergistic influences of transactional processes within families and with their social environment. Given the inherently contextual nature of the construct of resilience, varied process elements may be more or less useful, depending on different adverse situations over time, with a major crisis; disruptive transitions; or chronic multistress conditions. This perspective is attuned to the diversity of family cultures and structures, their resources and constraints, socio-cultural and developmental influences, and the viability of varied pathways in resilience.

Abstract Recent literature has discussed the role of attentional biases towards body-related stimuli. Specific foci have been on those with high levels of body image concerns and female samples. Unfortunately, there has been limited focus on male samples within existing literature. The aim of the current study was to provide a critical synthesis of the findings of existing studies exploring attentional biases in adult males towards body-related stimuli. Critical synthesis of the findings of 20 studies explored four key methodologies: eye-tracking, dot-probe, visual search, and other methodologies (e.g. ARDPEI task). The current review provides evidence of specific attentional biases towards body-related stimuli in adult males experiencing body image concerns. Similar patterns of attentional biases are also demonstrated in males with body image pathologies. However, there appears to be distinct patterns of attentional biases for male and female participants. It is recommended that future research considers these findings and utilises measures developed specifically for male samples. Furthermore, additional variables require further attention, i.e. reasons for engaging in social comparison and/or engaging in physical activity.

Abstract The gastrointestinal microbiome in animals provides an attractive target for manipulation to improve animal health and production performance. A better understanding of the chicken intestinal microbiome and how nutritional interventions can be used to modulate the microbiota is needed. Most studies of the intestinal microbiome of chickens have examined broilers with few studies focusing on the layer microbiome. This study focused on examining the impact of mannan-rich fraction (MRF) supplementation on the cecal microbiota of layers during and post peak lay. In a feeding trial, Shaver female laying hens were fed a control diet or a control diet supplemented with MRF in a randomized complete block design. Cecal content was collected from 10 randomly selected birds per treatment and subject to metagenome analysis at 4 timepoints (d 16, 32, 64, and 84 post-MRF introduction). Alpha diversity analysis revealed that Chao1 was significantly greater at D 16, D 32, and D 64 post-MRF supplementation but was significantly lower at D 84 in the MRF supplemented layers compared with the control (P < 0.005). PCoA plots showed that the bacterial community composition at the species level differed significantly (P < 0.001) between control and MRF supplemented layers at each timepoint. Microbiome analysis showed that following 84-days supplementation with MRF the pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Enterococcus faecalis, and Clostridioides difficile were significantly lower in the layer cecum. In this study we observed greater alpha and beta diversity and lower bacterial pathogen detection over the 84-days following supplementation with MRF in laying hens. Increased bacterial diversity of the intestinal microbiota is one of the key determinants of colonization resistance against invading pathogens. With reference to the global challenge of antibiotic resistance and food security, reducing pathogenic bacterial species through the use of natural nonantibiotic alternatives is of particular importance for food chain integrity as well as flock health.
